Title: How do I make a Tesla coil?

I want to make a Tesla Coil and I was wondering if I should buy a "OneTesla TS DIY Kit":

or make one from ground up?

I know that there are allot of guides for this, like this one:
http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-build-a-Tesla-Coil/
but I'm wondering will they be as powerful, and also, will I be able to make a MIDI controller to make them "sing"?

Why tho?
Does OneTesla use components that I can't get individually?
