Why anyone should've taken the huge effort necessary,  in order to pile stones up to create the pyramids in Egypt, is a deeply disturbing mystery.

The why isn't mysterious, it was religious belief.

Both actually.  The stones we see today were certainly made naturally and cut/carved by man as there was no known process at the time other than nature that could make sandstone, limestone, or granite all of which are used to varying degrees in the Pyramids and other ancient structures in the region.

The question of how they moved the huge stones remains a mystery but they have to be naturally made due to their composition.

Though long ago removed and weathered away the stones we see today were once covered with man made clay bricks and finished with a form of whitewash if I remember correctly so "both" would have to be the correct answer.

Stonehenge is not much different in this regard...

Not really all that difficult to understand.  Still today countries and individuals will sometimes go to great lengths to build monuments to themselves.

In ancient Egypt, they sincerely believed their Pharaohs would ascend following death after some period becoming a literal God and housed inside of his "eternal tomb" were to be slaves, wives, lovers, animal all waiting to join him in the afterlife and he would take all of his wealth, or a good portion of it to spend in the next life.  They also put stocks of grains and other food crops in the Tombs so that he and his fellows, man and beast would be well provisioned to survive upon resurrection.

That believe has always stumped me though since once closed, it would have taken a near army of slaves to open the pyramid from the inside to allow them all to do that.

Maybe they just planned for the new "God King" to waive a want and part the stoney passage ways or simply blow a hole through to the outside with some technological wonder of the ages that they would be given upon resurrection.
