Can science save us from what? Ourselves? No.
Science is neither a force for good nor bad. It is how we apply scientific knowledge that decides whether it be a benefit or otherwise.
Medical science has defeated many diseases. Is that good? It may save many from suffering, but it is a factor in human population expansion which leads to the need for more food.
Agricultural science has given us crops with greater yeilds, less disease and protection from pests. But this has had effects on nature, some of which have yet to become evident.
Science has given us power, but the release of energy stored for millions/hundreds of millions of years has a price. So science has given us bio fuels, but at what cost to the natural environment? Turning vast swathes of forest into palm oil production has a price we either do not understand or do not want to acknowledge.
Yes, we have aquired great scientific knowledge, but have yet to learn the secret of natural balance.
It is not science we must look to to ensure the future, it is us. We must understand that whatever we do, has a consequence. We must weigh up the pros & cons of all we do and decide whether the outcome is for the good or simply a furtherence of our biggest enemy. Greed.

I truly believe science can save us and it will be the only thing that can. i think every one should understand what science really is, and draw a line between science and religious teachings. however this is an article which inspired me a lot, and it gives a good insight for what science really is and how it works with Human Condition. feel free to read and give a feed back

Don, I generally agree with your thoughtful reply but I would like to expand on your last sentence...

I don't blame the gun either; it's an inanimate object. But the politicians, scientists, engineers, manufacturers and financiers behind its development have got a lot of responsibility. It is not just down to the person who fires it (unless you fall for the US gun lobbyist's arguments). Of course I don't just mean guns! The whole infrastructure of every society within the human population bears responsibility for the use of science whether for good or ill. And we all subject to the influences of the society in which we live so none of us are entirely "free" in our thinking.
Anyway, that is a different subject.

Without question Don_1, and truly your reply is at the heart of our problems. Science has given us many advantages over the natural order but it has also put greater responsibility upon us. All of your comments are worthy and direct us to the greater question. How can we wisely use this knowledge and are we willing to bare the added responsibility?
For a truth, it is not the science that will either save or destroy us, it is how we as responsible citizens of this planet use the advantage gained thru it's use.
