Tch tch tch, pinched nerves eh? Well, perhaps that'll teach you not to pinch things. And no pinching the nurse's bum! For one thing, she won't like it and for another, it'll look better on her than it will on you!

Thanks for letting people know, Bass. Duly noted and much appreciated.

I was better but not "better" enough.

The PROCEDURE took 20 minutes and was minimally invasive. However, it did not fix the back. The pain kept getting worse. Also, I am at present semi-paralyzed from the sternum down. Right leg useless, left leg retains some movement. Abdominal wall and back muscles are useless. I cannot sit up straight.

Diagnosis gotten today from the neurologist recommends surgery to remove excess fatty deposits in spine. I expect this to be Wed. or Thur. (Fat is normal in the spine as part of the cushioning. Too much fat is abnormal.)

The problem stems from morphine being introduced into my spinal cord by way of an implanted pump. And had I known that the morbidity rate for people with a setup such as I have is about 20% (vs. morbidity rate of 0.2% for general anesthesia) the implantation would have never happened. I am still trying to convince the doctor I want the mechanisms out of my body - period. Hell, I have lived with arthritis sine I was 21 (46 years.) I'll be damned if I am going to die from something so easily remedied.

I have had the infusion system since May, started giving me trouble in August and was so bad that I was admitted to hospital in late Dec. I have not been very active on this forum or anywhere else since then as something was dragging me down physically. Had no idea why. I have just now gotton a reasonable diagnosis and plan of action. I will post surgery date and time as soon as I know it.

I was hoping to see Bass in the field for some joint field work in late Feb. or March. Isn't going to happen.  HOWSOMEEVER - I will again be making my normal contribution - snide, rude, pithy remarks about everyone and everything - again soon.

Be afraid - be very afraid!

However, glad you are back, the place is not the same without you. ;D

Post by: JimBob on 31/01/2012 15:40:36

Well, well, well. The neurologist and the neurosurgeon disagree dramatically in their opinion. The younger neurologist is recommending a rather invasive surgery but the neurosurgeon does not like the diagnosis but believes the root cause has yet to be determined. He is very unwilling to inflict a rather long and difficult surgical recovery unless there is clear and persistent evidence that the actual cause has been isolated. His experience being greater, I think his opinion should prevail.

So -- more test and more waiting on a diagnoses that both can agree upon.  Heck, I have only been waiting on a root cause diagnostic for 33 days now.

The lesson for everyone - do not count on your preconceptions to make decisions. Approach each problem with a clear, open mind.

JimBob, you're one tough old buzzard!  And being one myself, I mean that in the nicest of ways.

Just remember, you are the boss, it's your body and you are the one with most at stake,  so by my calculations that makes you the final decision maker.

You may or may not want my opinion, but here it is anyway.  I like to try the path of least resistance (or least invasion in this case) first.  Your younger neurologist may be eager to prove what he can do with his surgical skills, but your older neurosurgeon has experience on his side, and when it comes to surgery I'll take experience over eagerness any day.  So basically, I agree with your thoughts.

Were you not properly informed of options and risks before the pump was put in?

Funny you mention Buddhism, because much that I've read about it is aligned with my spiritual beliefs.  I'll share with you an "unscientific" technique that may help.  I used it to help a friend who had quadruple bypass surgery and to the astonishment of her surgeon, she had no pain afterward.  I used it for my own surgery, wheeled in at noon and sitting up eating a roast beef dinner by 5pm, with very little pain.

It's visualization, but in addition, you "talk" to your body so it knows what to expect on a cellular intelligence level.  I imagine the whole process, from being wheeled in to being wheeled out of surgery in vivid detail.  If I need more information about the process or anatomical pictures or equipment pictures, I get them.  Then I can see the whole process clearly and "see" everything going just right.  While I'm visualizing the process, I'm talking to my body and explaining the whole process and telling my body that it is beneficial for my body and me.  I'm not actually talking out loud, just saying the words in my head along with the visualization.

What the heck?  Athletes visualize and it works for them.  And you can reference the work of Dr. Deepak Chopra for info on cellular intelligence.

I'm still sending you good energy JimBob, because you deserve good health.

Looking forward to your snide, rude, pithy remarks.

The neurologist is very strong in her opinion, has called in another neurosurgeon for a second opinion. I had a talk with her this afternoon and in the absence of any other pathology, she believes this to be the root cause. So all has been postponed. I now get to decide between the second opinion, the opinion of the neurosurgeon who put the pain pump in and the neurologist.

In light of the additional information that the older neurosurgeon was the person who put the pump in, I change my opinion.  This fellow apparently did not inform you properly and may now be sweating over a potential lawsuit.  I think your young neurologist is doing the right thing by having another neurosurgeon weigh in.  That gives you some time to do as much research yourself as you possibly can.  You're a smart guy, you'll figure it out.

Meanwhile I'm going to be checking up on your progress and sending you good energy.

See you at my Tibetan sky burial.

The younger neurologist is fighting hard for me. I saw another neurosurgeon ths afternoon about 4:30. He agrees totally with the neurologist. I am going to have the surgery one way or another. I have a very lucrative job as chief scientific officer with a billion dollar plus land investment company. I need to be at it by the end of April. I am getting to the job even if I show up in a wheelchair and still have a suit open against Mr. Vanity, the first neurosurgeon, and another one open against the hospital for blocking treatment options. They are as at much at fault as the botched job the surgeon did.

(I found out about it yesterday when I ordered a synopsis of all imaging done since Jan 1, 2011 here at this hospital. It does not make the walking sin of Vanity look very good.

JimBob,

How good are you at anger management?  You are certainly entitled to be upset (that word is likely milquetoast compared to how you feel), I just hope you can leave those feelings outside the door when you go in for surgery.

JB emailed that he will be going under the knife early tomorrow morning.  After getting a second and third opinion, he has agreed to the plan by the younger nuerologist and will undergo a laminectomy (removing part of the thoracic vertebrae where the closing of the spinal canal has caused pressure and leaking of fluid between the "no-leak" cord sheaf and the longer main nerves).  He sounds a bit nervous about this, but, hey, how can a little knife hurt a silicified olde fossil like JB   :o

Again, please keep him in your thoughts and prayers.

All is well = I am alive, at least. And in the recovery room I was able to move my right, totally paralyzed, leg a bit. It APPEARS that this surgery may very well have been the correct thing to do. Will know more in the next couple of days.

Tanks everyone for all the support. It is truly appreciated.

Title: Re: JimBob update
Post by: JimBob on 22/02/2012 02:40:01
Well, I am in a combo rehab hospital and acute care hospital. Been here about a week and a half can expect at least two more weeks. Most compromised leg is moving a little more than it was and I am told that the nerve signals are reaching most if not all the muscles below the waist. It is just a game of work hard and see how far healing gets. I am rather hopeful though - all I have read says 90% recovery (If you are strong enough) but it takes months, literally..

ARGGGGG !

Regression - and I am not using math-speak. Two days ago my left leg, the "good" one, began going numb. It is continuing and is now about in the sane shape the right one is in. Pardon me, But I must shout out a hearty CRAPPP 1!

Two months in a hospital and no real answer. Tomorrow I am demanding that the pain pump be removed, no discussion, no argument. Just get it out. I do not know how much more of this I can take. I am depressed and angry.

And I sure could use a change of scenery. This bed is getting OLD.

I agree.. Man Jimbob... We must have similar medical care... I am so sorry.. Is there any possibility that a clot or compressed or pinched nerve is causing it or definitely just taking a dump on you like the other...or is it for sure the same
trouble...

Keep your chin up and give em hell in there.  I understand the anger and depression...so sorry you are feeling so down on top of all the physical pain and problems... I wish it were not true... This place is worse than being in a harem ----      Well, at least what I imagine it is like to be in a harem. My doctor came in early this AM and I almost didn't nee to ask about getting the pump removed from my abdominal wall and the connecting catheter removed from my spine. She knew all about it and had talked to the neurosurgeon. Almost all was already taken care of !

More of what I hate - plans being made behind my back. Mumble, mumble, mumble!

Takes a note *Jimbob likes one on one and none of that multiple partner business, that harem living might be indictive of......* Lol...

Well I hope having the pump removed will help rather then to make it hurt more...

Yes I hate the way plans are made without my knowledge..I like being informed of all the possible scenarios as they are being mulled over..... I feel less helpless if I have the options to look over ask questions and research.. I hope you stay on top of things...and that the Doctors do a good job when push comes to shove..

The one thing I can say is that some of my least favorite Doctors have been ones that
toted a lousy bedside manner and treated me like an unintelligent twit!
Anyway..keep your chin up and post back soon.. hugs..

Well JimBob, I can relate to your feelings of frustration at the ups (hopes) and downs (despairs) of healing and the way pain grinds you down until there's little tolerance left for talk.  However, if you reframe the picture you might see some things in a different light.  Three of the blessings you still have are your intelligence, your spunk, and your charm.  I suspect it's your charm that makes you feel like you are in a harem.  I picture the nurses fussing and clucking around you, drawn by your charisma.

Now if we switch to an energy field point of view where your thoughts and feelings combined become manifest, the decision to remove the pump was made BECAUSE of your decision, not behind your back.  And now you have a valuable experience to tap in to.  Go back to your thoughts and feelings about getting the pump removed, and how they linked together to create strong emotion attached to your decision.  That's how you manifest.  Take that process and use it as a blueprint to create any reality and outcome that you want.  I realize it's outside our conventional paradigm of how the world works, but I remember you saying you were open to new ideas, and I believe you.  In any life experience where there is as much at stake as you have on the line right now, it is natural (in fact we are conditioned this way) to have fear creep in at some point.  I would venture a guess that you initially felt good about your surgery and recovery, and then that nagging bit of fear (maybe in the form of doubt) sneaked in and it manifested in the form of a backslide.  But remember, YOU ARE IN CONTROL.  I picture being human  like driving one of those giant earth-moving trucks.  Lots of power available, if we just learn to drive the darn things.

So, relax your body, close your eyes, and create your own outcome.  As an added bonus you can create any change of scenery that you like, complete with smells, sounds, tastes and feelings.

Still sending you good energy, JimBob,

Donnah

APRIL ALREADY!!

Had surgery -again - to remove the device from my body supplying daily Morphine dosages into my spine. The pump had been turned off for a month but the catheter into the spine was still there. Once it was gone small improvements were seen nearly every day - as well as more pain. BUT today I was able to stand in the parallel bars for about 10 seconds on my own. Next - I start walking. 2-3 weeks and I should be ready for full-on rehab and aqua-therapy. The last will dramatically increase my strength in a very short time.

All of your thoughts, including Neil's evil and hurtful barbs, have made me feel good. As for Neill  Oh .... I am planning a special hell just for him. My best bud deserves the best, right???  ;D

JB, have you lost or gained weight during all this lying about in bed? A friend of mine has just been laid up for a few months with a back problem and he has lost a huge amount of weight. He is weak as a result and is just starting to build up again. It seems counter-intuitive that this would happen so I am interested to know what happened to you in this regard.

I hope you get fully fit, and hopefully pain free, soon.

Well, if you put him through half what it sounds like you've had to endure I reckon he's hell will be pretty DamneD excruciating!... I'm betting most of us here will hope we never have to find out if we've got the balls to go through all that; is all I can say!!

Lost weight - muscle mass loss.

I did stand for the first time since Mid or late Feb last Friday and again today. Now that I am on my feet I believe I will progress faster and faster. Getting to this point has been hell but the trend has been the better it gets, the faster my neuropathy goes away. SO........

Had a chance to visit JimBob a couple of weeks ago in Austin.  He looks great and his recovery is progressing (I think he's training for the local triathlon next week :o).  He was in good spirits and looking forward to leaving Austin in the near future.

Thanks Bass.  JimBob's probably so eager to get out of there that he'll have the gas pedal to the metal and we'll see the smoke from his tires burning rubber all the way up here in Canada.
