Title: Am I a pyromaniac?
Post by: christianchick on 23/03/2004 16:04:58
I like to blow up things, and set them on fire, how many other piroes do we have in here?  Personally i just like the way fire looks

Your not alone ChristianChick!!!

I like burning and blowing up things as well (especially Caesium[;)])
Makes me wonder if its some sort of genetic thing, the reason why some people are fascinated by fire and explosions and others aren't.

Any Views from anyone? (paticularly the genetic specialist MayoFlyFarmer!)

I Love Caesium!!!

genetic specialist huh???  I should show that to my boss and demand a raise!
I have no genetic insights to the issue, but I would also like to go on record as a carzed pyro myself.  I think everyone has some fascination with fire, but I know what you mean.... theres something in my blood that just burns (no pun intended) for fire.  Oddly enough, explosions never really did it for me though.  I mean they're cool and all don't get me wrong, but flames....there's just something magical about them.  One of those beauties of the natural world.

When 900 years you reach look as good you will not, hmm??

I like fire too. Fire glows. Who doesn't like glowing things?

I made a post once asking what flames actually were and I don't think anyone told me the answer. I have my own theory but I don't know if it's right and I would like to know if anyone knows.

Am I dead? Am I alive? I'm both!

one more post will light this sucker on fire, yes quantumcat, i have asked that before, people always give me what produces the flames, but not the actual flame itself.

i have been here longer yet you seem to be more advanced...

The actual flames of a fire are made up of gaseous products that are luminous at that temperature.  Adding enough energy to a substance excited its electrons to a higher state.  Photons are emitted as the electrons drop to lower energy levels.  As the heated gases move away from the energy source (the burning material) they lose energy to the surrounding air, causing their excited electrons to change to lower energy levels.

Sparks are basically the same thing,....an electrical energy discharge adds a lot of energy very quickly to the haseous air molecules around it, which then quickly lose that energy to the surrounding air molecules, causing photon emission.

When I was a kid ..I used to love playing with matches ...I was a naughty boy !!!..I did something silly. In my happy naievity I made a little camp fire in the bath !!..My rationale was that, because the bath was used for filling with water, it must therefore be fire proof !!!...Oh boy, was I wrong !!!..I didn't burn the house down but there was of course no way I could explain a burning smouldering bath away !!!  I love flames too though.

I'm not surprised there are pyros in this forum. Here's a link you might enjoy. Is this you?

Hey there was one on that link (nice link by the way) that reminded me of a cool pyro story.  Anyone else here in the states remember the last presidential election thattook for forever to decide... about 4:00 in the morning (I think it was on CBS) one of the monitors in the news studio burst into flames because it had been on so long?  Dan rather (or whoever the anchor was) didn't really know what to make of it.... he'd been going for so long too taht he was mentally fried... but I was sitting at home like "that is the coolest thing EVER!!"

Thhanks gsmollin, that's a great link.....How do you know about that link ?..are YOU a Pyro ?......well...my match playing days didn't last long after my bath incident and my love of making flames was dampened !!..now my fun with explosions are limited to party poppers....(https://www.thenakedscientists.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fmysmilies.ipbfree.com%2Fs%2Fkao%2Fcactus%2Fpanm.gif&hash=a25ec7838af9d7a33a283133174272e9)

Here are my favorites:

"You know you're a pyro if you watch the crew setting off the fireworks instead of the breaks." I read that one right after a fireworks display where I watched the crew the whole show.

"You know you're a pyro if you've seen a starburst from WAY too close." (Hint: You're too close if the hot ashes from the starburst burn your shirt.)

And the one that hits closest to home (literally): "You know you're a pyro if the neighbors are running out of their houses while you are diving under the bushes as the shock waves echo across the neighborhood."

yes see i have a problem  with not looking at the magnesium ribbon directly when i burn it, its just so preety...i haven't been able to create any explosions which is quite irksome, but i love to watch people do it and for gsmolin i prefer to actually light the fire works[:P]

Greetings in Christ Jesus my Lord

So do I, but don't you think lighting off one of those big shows has got to be the biggest adrenalin rush? That's really a pyros fantasy job, and you just KNOW those guys are hopeless pyromaniacs.

A friend of mine is in graduate school getting a masters degree in, essentially, burning things.  He's designing fuels for the government to use in various pieces of scary government machinery like missiles, artillery, planes, that sort of thing.

Did you think it was likely that they would reply after 14 years?

What's a starburst?

That's probably a reference to the pattern that fireworks make when they explode.
