Title: competency based interview questions
Post by: DrN on 13/01/2007 22:38:21
anyone have any examples (and pointers on what makes a good or bad answer!) please? I guess its things like 'tell me about a time when you were criticised about your work?'

Thank you for your time. Feedback will not be offered ...

Thanks!

Give an example of a time when you've had to proritise your work ,what criteiria did you use.

Give an example of a time when you had to request help due to a task being beyond your abilities.

Thanks. any idea what they might be looking for in answer? perhaps just an answer that includes a positive outcome. or maybe even a negative outcome if you can show you learnt from that and would do things differently next time? or maybe they just want to know that you have actually had to do these things (and you've not just blindly followed orders without thinking?)

the second one is interesting. perhaps a good answer would be one where a project was simply too big, or the deadline too soon? and showing that you are capable of admitting when you're out of your depth and need help, rather than being ashamed and battling on regardless.

They are only looking for positive answers to difficult situations, but more importantly what they are looking for is the reasoning behind the decisions,What criteria did they use, why one thing was deemed more important than another. Different reasons they could use could be, Monetary costs, Employee relations, Health & safety, Public perception, Deadlines, The Laws etc.

Never use a negative unless it can be turned into a positive.Something could be turned into a positive if like you said they can show how they have learnt from the events and would make a correct decision if ever faced with a similar situation in the future. But they would need to say exactly how they have learnt from the situation and the reason for the original decision.

It's all about them being able to recognize their strengths and weaknesses, knowing when and how to act on them and when faced with a difficult situation they need to show that they have the strength of character to stop and ask advice even though that it may show their weaknesses to people who they would prefer not to admit them to.
A good way for someone to show how they countered their lack of experience in a particular subject would be to show how they used basic team working principle's which allowed them to use the experience of others to help decide on the way forward.

right, a list of my strengths and weaknesses then. and some thought into some examples to evidence them. that should do the trick. I hope.
Thank you!
