Title: About yourselves!
Post by: Exodus on 26/04/2003 01:09:02
In my opinion people on here should inform a little about themselves so our science family gets to know each other a bit better!

I'll start, i'm 21 and a geology student at the university of london, i have a huge passion for snowboarding but am keen to try other extreme sports! I love science and learning useless science facts... er cant think of anything else, so cmon everyone else... fill me in about yourself! [:D]

Thats Economics...

I'm a 47 yr old mom.  My proudest achievement in life is being a good mom.  I surmise that I'm a good mom because my son is a fantastic person[8D].

I have a post-degree certificate in freelance writing.  Writing feels as natural as breathing[^].

I view the universe as one huge organism and believe that everything we do affects everything and everyone else. Like individual T-cells, we each have a small effect, but when we work together we can keep the whole organism healthy.  Thought precedes action, so we need to pay attention to our thoughts and keep them positive.

[:)][:D][8D]

Science is fascinating; each thought on the subject spawns numerous [?]questions, and this forum is a great place to get some answers[:D].

I'm Chris and at the moment I'm working as a doctor in London seeing lots of jokers [8D] in the Casualty department who come in because they don't want to go to work [:(!], usually !

Occasionally I see a real patient, with something really wrong with them, [xx(] but not often.

I'm 16, a student, I study physics, chemistry, AME, english, french and religon (only because I have to - darn catholic school system)

I love science and I do a lot of extra-curricular science things. After I come back from france, I'll finish off my senior years and go study genetics and biochemistry at the ANU!!!!!

Religous people annoy me greatly

Chris, I understand your frustration with people who don't want to work.  They are very wearing on doctors like yourself and make it hard[:(!] for those who are serious about healing to be heard above their whining[xx(].  I'd love to stand behind them and dispense some (size 7) momentum to help initiate movement[^].

I did notice some fundamental differences between someone who wants to heal and those who pay only lip service to getting well.  If you are interested I'll share that info[:)].

I hate it when they try and convert me, mostly ! Random people on AIM or MSN like to pop up when and say "God loves you!" I say "Not if God is an idea that your mind agrees with because it's too tiny to think about the REAL answers" they say "Just because you've led a life of sin dosn't mean that Jesus won't embrace you and love you! He can make your life better!" I say "I'd like to control my own life thanks, not attribute all the good things to a mysterious figment of the imagination and blame the bad things on us humans." they say "Christian life will make you a happier and fuller person than your pagan life will!" I say "That sounds like a cult to me. Get away." And etc. etc. etc. It generally turns into a very heated discussion then we end up hating each other.

They probably find me just as annoying as I find them ^_^

Hi, I'm Dalya.  I am one of the columnists, but I don't look like that picture in real life.  I'm a biologist supposedly but I like teaching and writing much more than doing research.  Too bad I have to earn a living.

Is there any biological or biomedical topic that anyone would like to hear about in detail?  I have a long list that would be fun to write about, but since I am writing to educate the readers of this web site rather than to amuse myself (next one coming soon is on how cells from different family members can end up in your body naturally which is an amusingly bizarre phenomenon in my mind), I can take requests.

Hi Dalya,
How 'bout doing an article on the way our bodies absorb calcium and the most readily absorbed sources (including vitamin supplements), how much is too much, and what causes crystalization of excess calcium?  I think that would be great.

Quantumcat,
It's pretty clear that you are bright and like to think for yourself.  There's an article you may be interested in reading at http://me.essortment.com/informationburn_rjpa.htm  It talks about the period of history refered to as "the burning times" (1450 - 1700).  King James (the King James version of the Bible is what many people refer to) caused the horrific slaughter of thousands of innocent people accused of "witchcraft" and "heresy".  It also mentions the Duke of Burgundy (as a good guy), who I seem to remember as being connected with the Knights Templar.  Can anyone enlighten me there?

Ooooh .. maybe you can explain in detail what happens in DNA fingerprinting ^_^

I did something of the kind at a work experience in a plant biology lab last year, but I don't really know why I was adding this liquid to that, that liquid to this, sticking it in various machines then putting the tiny little drops in the electrolysis thingo!

What are the liquids and machines and what was happening??

My supervisor just got me to do stuff without explaining anything :(

Donnah - thought I'd do a little round up of the cherished members of society who have popped in to the casualty dept. here this evening where I am doing a night duty.

Statistics so far this evening :

Patients seen so far : 5
Patients seen so far who are genuinely ill : 1
Patients seen so far who speak English : 1
Patients seen so far who are on benefits and have never worked : 4
Patients seen so far who are genuinely ill and came by ambulance : 0
Patients seen so far who are time wasters with nothing wrong : 4
Patients seen so far who are time wasters and came by ambulance : 3

sorry...I've run out of energy to go on.
Title: Re: About yourselves!
Post by: Donnah on 07/05/2003 02:33:11
Chris,

I get the picture.  Want to borrow my size 7?  Good people sometimes need help from welfare, but they don't usually stay in the system for long.  If your medical system is like ours, people on welfare don't have to pay for an ambulance, and people who arrive at the hospital by ambulance are treated first.  It's like rewarding bad behaviour, "time (and resource) wasters" can use an ambulance as a free taxi, and get to jump the queue at the same time.

I used to try and help others who said they were trying to get well.  Then I noticed that most  of them:

A  don't work
B  have rarely, if ever, worked
C  have a million excuses why they "can't" work
D  smoke
E  are unwilling to quit smoking
F  have a million excuses to smoke
G  drink
H  are unwilling to quit drinking
I  justify their drinking
J  frequently complain (aka whining)
K  rarely have anything good to say
L  are unwilling to make any changes to their lifestyle
M  are rarely well educated (that would require effort)
N  will frequently ask for "help" (aka get someone else to do it)
O  are unwilling to use their own financial resources
P  are noticeably absent when there's work to be done
Q  are first in line for freebies or fun
R  smoke marijuana EVERY day ALL day
S  love to take prescription drugs that give them a "buzz"
T  love to talk, but rarely (if ever) listen
U  have an answer for everything

That's all I can think of at the moment.  Have I missed anything?

I'm interseted in hearing in more detail how our brain does things without us even having to think about it, for example blinking when an object approaches the eye, or reacting to cold/hot stimuli. I think its fascinating.

Post by: Claire on 10/05/2003 20:53:40
Hello, I'm Claire, 24, have just finished (yesterday) my history degree at Royal Holloway and am interested in the history of medicine. I studied medieval medicine in Europe as part of my degree and wrote my dissertation on the treatment of the insane in the medieval Islamic world.

I don’t know anything about the Duke of Burgundy referred to, but it must have been an earlier one connected with the Templars, as the order was destroyed by about 1315 and lots of its leaders executed for sacrilegious practices.

I think the article makes some very sweeping generalisations about a complicated subject, and is a bit journalistic in terms of its language. There is a theory by a chap called R.A.Moore that medieval society was a 'persecuting society', that persecution became institutionalised in legislation. So I think it's important to see persecution of witches in the context of society and its nature as a whole rather than seeing it as being solely initiated by the Catholic Church. There are also some interesting exceptions to the idea that any one 'different' was persecuted. Jewish physicians flourished in medieval Europe, particularly in Spain and ironically even the pope had one.[:D]

Charles Clarke, the Labour education secretary described by the Guardian as "pugnacious" (though looking at his picture, "pig-like" would be more appropriate), said yesterday, on the subject of higher educational establishments (universities), that "medieval historians are ornamental", and essentially serve little useful purpose.

Given this governments track record on education, can't say as I'm surprised. If there was a course offering "pseudo-asylum seeker studies", or "fleecing the benefits system studies", you can guarantee THAT would be viewed as "essential".

Sorry - disregard my other post on the other thread asking about this.

Doctor eh. Mate, DON'T DO IT.

The NHS is a terrible place to work. Let me give you some examples why you might want to reconsider and do something else.

1) I have just finished working in a casualty department. Our rota was illegal and greatly exceeded the number of hours we were supposed (legally) to be working per week. Normally when this happens the hospital you work for has to pay you more money to make up for all the extra work. Our hospital has agreed that our rota breaches the guidelines, but they say it is their 'policy' not to pay us back for the extra work we have done BEFORE we complained. Therefore we have worked for 2 months and are losing money equivalent to 20% of our salary which is a LOT - can you see the fire brigade tolerating that ? Doctors are treated like a piece of rubbish by hospitals because they amount to cheap labour.

2) I'm getting married this summer. I have purposefully saved up some extra leave so that I can get married and have a honeymoon. But when I started a new post this week the boys who make the rules decided that we can only have 6 days off in total - totally screwing my wedding plans. And are they sympathetic to this special situation ? Answer : Are they also from Andromeda ?

3) A young guy who is my brother's age has just got a very average degree from a very average university but has gone to work in the city. In his first job he earns more than I do for working over half as many hours and spending a third of the time I did at university (8 years).

4) Hospital accommodation is appalling. Unless of course you have a penchant for living in a rabbit hutch the size of a shoe-box and you don't mind them erecting a building site outside your window that will keep you awake all day when you are trying to sleep after a night on call.

5) You'll be moving jobs EVERY 6 months. Yep, you have to apply for a new job and then move yourself and all of your possessions to a new hospital every 6 months for at least 3 years. Then it's every year. Oh, and if that's not bad enough, if you are working all night on the night of the move - too bad. You're still to present yourself to the next job at 7.45am the next day for 'induction'. And then work all day. But your room won't be available until the evening, or possibly the next day, so you don't mind all of your possessions being nicked from your car whilst your room is 'cleaned' ready for your use (loose use of the word 'cleaned') do you ?

If you want to chat about it, let me know and I'll let you have my contact no. I would strongly advise you to think very carefully before committing yourself to this. Medical schools are really struggling to fill places at the moment and there is a reason for it. (You'll be told that medicine is really competitive to get into and that there are 10 applicants per place. In reality everyone applies to about 10 places and hence there is more like 1 person per place at the moment).

Chris, Congratulations on your upcoming marriage.  The long hours and shift work you speak of is imposed on Canadian doctors too.  I would like to know if that is a world-wide problem. I know that I don't want someone who has been awake and on shift for 36 hours looking after me if I'm injured.  Doesn't the doctors' creed start with "first do no harm"?  What about harm to themselves?  Doctors are supposed to promote health and lead by example.  What kind of example is it to flog your own body with long, weird hours?  What is the maximum legal limit for a doctor to work in the UK?

How worrying that this man is the Labour education secretary!! I am totally disppointed, but not entirely surprised. I'm sure his comments are born out of ignorance and he probably hasn't actually any idea about the contributions medieval historians make to education and our knowledge in general. The recent apology made by the pope for the Crusades was in part a result of the intensive academic interest in the subject in the last 10 years and the expansion of our knowledge about the appalling behaviour of Crusading countries. Why does he stop at medieval history? Why not say modern history is useless too? Where does he draw the line I wonder. Perhaps learning about the Holocaust is less useful than 'general studies'.

Doctors are paid well, aren't they? And you get the satisfaction of saving people's lives :p
Title: Re: About yourselves!
Post by: chris on 15/05/2003 11:07:44
On first glance it looks like doctors are well paid. But when you take into account the fact that we are working at least twice as many hours per week (80 usually) as most people in most jobs, doing several weekends per month, and on-calls involving being up all night and then all the next day too, when you work out our hourly rate it's pretty poor. My rate of pay equates to about 11 pounds per hour. to put that into perspective, a secretary in London with little training STARTS on that. Nurses and physiotherapists doing weekend and bank holiday shifts get double that, and a day off to make up for it.

Australian doctors faced with similarly appalling working conditions a few years back took matters into their own hands and went on strike. Since then they have enjoyed a much better working environment and good pay. But for them a trip to the UK is worthwhile because they earn the equivalent of 3x the salary here because of the exchange rate.

The US and Canada will not let British-qualified doctors work there without taking their exams, including all of the exams you took whilst a little kiddie at University, even if you are the professor of medicine at a UK University !

It all depends what your medical specialty is, doesn't it?

In the USA, there are different regulations depending on what state you live in about the maximum number of hours in a row you can work, though apparently that gets flouted there as well.  Different specialties get paid different amounts of money (say, about 1 bucketload of money for the worst paid to tens of bucketloads of money for the better paid).  It probably averages out to a decent amount if you do hourly calculations, though it is not the norm that doctors are rich. certainly working long hours with the stress of responsibility for other people lives and health in your hand can impoverish even the wealthiest person's quality of life.  Also, American doctors have to deal with insurance companies which is a huge pain in the ass (trust me!) and strain on time.  All that said though, I saw my brother-in-law about a month ago -he's a GP in Boston -and he spent the weekend reading 'Medical Economics' in favor of The New England Journal of Medicine (more clinical stuff) which he had with him as well -I was somewhat naively astonished that they have a whole magazine devoted to medical economics!!!  Though they probably have several.

Donnah -I'll leave you the calcium article.  Part of my lab works on calcification in cardiovascular disease, so if you need info on the crystallization part of it, I can probably help you out (though I have no clue about it off the top of my head)

Also, quantumcat-I'll look into doing an article on reflexes but for now if you want, the last thing I wrote was on sensation of hot and cold stimuli which you mentioned.

Tom,

I didn't say don't train as a doctor, merely don't work as one in the terrible NHS environment where doctors are treated like pieces of rubbish.

A medical degree is an excellent introduction to a broad range of basic biomedical sciences including biology, physiology, anatomy, pharmacology, genetics, pathology, biochemistry, histology, endocrinology, reproductive biology, neuroscience, psychology, sociology, epidemiology etc. You can use it as a springboard into almost anything. To take a personal example, I took time out to do a second degree in neuroscience along the way, then a PhD in virology and now, although working as a doctor at the moment I'm also making science radio shows and websites on the side.

You could argue that 6 years medical school and 20-30,000 pounds worth of debt when you finish might be a bit of a disincentive and therefore a straight science degree might suit you better.

There is much validity to what you have just said in regards to us being part of one huge organism. I am constantly amazed at the accumulative influence we have together on our present as well as our future. Our accumulative energies! The energy created from any positive thought can make any desire or dream come to fruition. If there could only be a true unification of like minded individuals to tackle some serious issues such as environmental and humanitarian problems! As this exists to some extent, I truly wonder if it will make a difference when and where it should. If we as a whole can make positive changes in time!

Even in our personal lives. Can we as individuals truly act only out of love and not a much more selfish emotion? Could we even do it for one hour out of the day? If we achieved this in our personal lives to a greater degree, would that bring us all closer together as a positive force? In my mind's eye, I see us as all being connected by a web of God's energy. This web spans the globe and transcends the universe; it can transmit any intention or desire, as well as emotion, love, hate, anger or happiness. Connected as we all are, we have the accumulative ability to create an amazing future.

The one thing I feel holds most of us back is the fear of change. Fear being the operative word. Fear is the one emotion that all of the anarchy within our minds stems. And change creates such a broad spectrum of unknown colors that it is so much easier for many us to fear ourselves into a corner than it is to just take one positive step forward. This may be why we as a society move so slowly in positive directions, and so quickly in negative ones.

I'm sorry I tend to ramble a bit.

Jaramillo, you bring up a good point about fear.  To my mind, there are really only two emotions that all other emotions stem from; love and fear.  Which emotion do you suppose "feeds" God, and which "feeds" the devil?  We all get to choose what (and who) we hold in our hearts and therefore what (and who) we invite into our lives on a daily basis.
Title: Re: About yourselves!

I sgree with you that there are 2 core emotions. Every negative emotion has a root of fear...Fear of not getting what you want and fear of losing what you've got. Love is a little more complex in my mind, but the same concept. Positive thought. I apologize for not knowing off hand who in here said it, but it was brilliant. "Try forgiving someone". It just makes you feel so much better. Even though you don't want to, it just turns out positive....That's got to be love.
Just a thought.

Hi Chris,
Bezoar here, 53 years old, and new to this forum.  Have been a registered nurse in the USA since age 20.  Can identify with you about the malingerers.  I work in surgery part time, and review madical records for lawyers part time.  Why is it that everyone who gets in an auto accident has a back injury and can't work anymore.  Just reviewed a record of a woman who got hit in the head with a pipe at a hardware store and swears it gave her temporal arteritis -- of course, she can't work.  I do find, with these types, that there are usually ongoing psychological issues that influence their not working.  They taught me in psychiatry that when dealing with neuroses, you have to ask what function does the illness have?  So often, it is masking another problem that the person doesn't want to cope with.  In this case, upon further examination of the record, and contrary to what she admitted in deposition, she is having marital problems.  How do I know?  She had PID and was tested for gonorrohea and chlamydia.  Right about the time they were going to reconcile, she got hit in the head with the pipe.  Now, her husband drives a cab 12-18 hours a day, 7 days a week.  What do you want to bet they don't have sex any more either?  So, the illness gets her the attention she wants from her husband when he's home, allows her to punish him by not having sex, and releases her from having to deal with her rage over the situation.  Interesting how the mind works, huh?

Bezoar

Hi All,

I'm Robert, 46, the Financial Controller of a manufacturing company located in Western Sydney (Australia). I have a 3 yo son with my current partner and a 26 yo and two 24 yo from previous marriages. I like to learn. I also like beer. mmm beer. I've found that these two pursuits don't always go together.

While I was reared an Anglican, I now don't believe in a higher power or "life after death". My everlasting life is within my kids.

I am interested in the origin of our species and our evolutionary path to this point.

I also wonder what happens to your accent when you sing.

People still have accents when they sing don't they ?

Sorry Donnah, but your Celine Dion statement really put me off. I've never heard of busted, so that seems a good thing as well.

When you listen to someone talk with a heavy pommie or american accent, why does this heavy accent dissapear when they sing. Maybe it's just because I don't have an accent that I notice...listen to Chris Martin (Coldplay) or the Gallagher boys (Oasis) talk and then listen to them sing. It may only work if you don't have the accent yourself so you pommies should maybe listen to Anthony Kiedis (RHCP).

Umm, What's a "pommie"?
I'm curious, as well, if there is an actual scientific / medical reason why the accents go away.

Its the nickname that the old convicts from down under call us english!

I quite like it actually. As for accents, i've noticed that many are less evident when people sing! As for Busted, its lucky for you mate that they'll never break into the global music scene!

Thanks, guys. I thought it was pretty funny, but I just can't let these things go by without comment. It must have been the diet of Monty Python and Blackadder when I was younger. The Life of Brian was the funniest movie I have ever seen and the current crop of high tech action and predictable comedy movies pale in comparison to some of their classic movies and shows.

I live in Sydney. Its currently the middle of winter and the weather today is fine with a maximum temperature of 18 C and a minimum of 7. It's gettin' cold here but it's all relative I guess.

Robert, we have something in common there! I'm a huge fan of Monty Python, although the Holy Grail is my favourite of the films, Brian isn't far behind...

Classic lines in Brian though such as "He's not the Messiah, he's a very naughty boy, Now P*ss Off! SO FUNNY!

Justin, I picture you in a lab, with tables everywhere and you are tending to your flies and other tasks, totally engrossed in what you are doing.  When your attention is not required for a task, you think about many things, but generally you have a busy mind.  You are aware of flies buzzing by your head, but it does not bother or distract you.  Hair dark blonde or light brown, about 4 inches long.  Roughly 5'9" and comfortable in a T-shirt and khaki pants.

Anyone else want to describe how they see Justin?

and no Neil, I wasn't ever in prison, that was a joke.  Still working on a night in jail (one of my goals in life) but I can't figure out anything that will put me there that doesn't test my morality, leave a big scar on my criminal record, or end up costing me a lot of $$
any suggestions?

Mayo, if you lived here in the UK, just don't pay your TV licence and you can go spend a few weeks in Jail, do nothing AND watch television for free!!

What is a TV License?  Do you have to pay for it if you don't watch TV?  I find the whole concept offensive!

well...it's kinda like this. (MEGA SUMMARY)..you pay a license to the BBC...about £109 a year and you get a load of TV with NO adverts and a ton load of radio too.....it's a mass-debateable thing over here...we also do get tons of tv too with adverts but at least they're not every 5 seconds like they are in the states !!...

Richard...as you probably know James Whale refuses to pay his license and he's never been done for it  !!

So, you have to pay this fee or go to jail?!?

Here, you pay for a feed from a cable provider and get anywhere from 50 to 500 channels, many of which are commercial free (many are not).  but if you don't want TV, you don't go to jail.  Personally, I don't watch TV.  I pay for the cable because that's all my dad does is watch TV, and I get high speed internet from the same provider, all at a discount because it's all on the same account.  I do sometimes watch a movie (like about once a month or two) since it is available.  I can't live without high speed internet though.

Me too !!...long live broadband or cable internet ..YAYY !!!....there have been instances when people have gone to jail but I think it is as a very very very last resort....we also pay for cable/satellie tv with a ton of channels too but admittedly they all have adverts. Of course , me being up so late I do watch a ton of tv when I'm not 'fingering' this website....(err...and a few others too !!! *cheeky chuckle*)

so even if you don't own a TV you still have to pay the fee???  why don't they just add it on to everyone's taxes then instead of charging you a seperate bill??  I'll never understand europeans (but at least they make more sense than Americans)

Can you imagine this fellow in about 60 years in the geriatric ward?

I cancelled my cable last year because we don't watch TV.  I get impatient with things that waste my time, like commercials (unless they are good) and pointless shows.  I love a good movie though.  My son just downloads whatever he wants to watch.

Hi Justy........NO, if you don't own any equipment that can receive a television signal then you do not pay for the license, it's only for TV owners, and old people don't pay at all, and if you happen to have just a black and white tv then you pay less too....!!...

I don't understand europeans either...Hey !!..I don't even understand myself !! (https://www.thenakedscientists.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Finstagiber.net%2Fsmiliesdotcom%2Fcontrib%2Fdvv%2Fcwmddd.gif&hash=b6b3aa165a6727e336cfeff96b751a0e)

OK, ok..... my consious has been eating at me all day.  Since Donnah did so wonderfully at describing me with no information, I don't see how I can keep the rest of you guessing (so you can all thank Donnah)  I also broke down and figured out how to post a pic on here so if you wanna see the man behind the curtain you can go to that thread.
Well "aboot" me...   I'm 22 (sorry neil-o there is no past 25 years!)  I grew up in Central, Wisconsin.  I moved to Duluth, Minnesota to go to school.  I graduated this past December with a major in Biology and a minor in Economics (did a whoole econ minor just to avoid the one class I needed for my chem minor....THATS how much I hate chemistry)
After graduating I got a job as a research technician at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.  I'm considering staying here for grad-school (when that time comes) as well, as its an AMAZING facility.  I've been here for about 2 months now.... I think I've learned more in the past 2 months than I did in 4.5 years of college.  I work in a drosophila lab, doing genetics research on a couple of projects.  Before my days as a lab-monkey I was an aquatics nerd.  I lifeguarded, and taught swimming lessons at more pools, lakes and aquatics facilities than I care to recall for 7 years.  I have just about every certification the Redcross ofters in first-aid or aquatics, and I've heald every aquatics position you could possibly imagine from the guy who scrubs the toilets in the lockerroom, to managing a park system with several pools.
As for my other interests in life, I am a huge music fan.  I spend WAY too much money on CDs and instruments.  I've played in several bands, some more successful than others.  I dabble in a lot of instruments, but my two main ones are Drumset, and trombone.  I'm also into outdoors activities (I too would be more than happy wanderint the world living out of a rucsack....we should start a club.  I almost did decide to spend a year living in the Ozarks out of my tent, but the fact that I had already put the work intohalf of a semester of college at that point made it sensless to waste that.....someday!), I especially enjoy backpacking, canooeing, and hunting.  I'm also into athletics.  I enjoy endurance sports, running has always been my thing but lateley triathlons have been tripping my trigger.  I love watching football (the American variety) and am a HUGE Greenbay Packers fan!
hmmmm.... guess thats "about me"

I play voice.  In other words, I sing.  Not very well yet, but with a bit of work it could be decent.

I finally found a video game I can kick Steve and his friends' butts with.  He bought a kareokee game where you sing along and it scores you.  My first three songs were two platinum and a gold record and I unlocked a new song.  He hasn't invited me back to play again yet.

Welcome Richie.  Most people don't worry too much about your spelling, but some of our members can be kinda mean sometimes.

I've always thought rock climbing would be a lot of fun, but never tried it.  As I get older, I have trouble getting to the top of a ladder.

Physics is fun - you'll enjoy it when you start taking the classes.  There are lots of good books on physics that don't require a lot of math.  One that I'll recommend is "The Elegant Universe" by Brian Greene. It is about string theory, but in the first few chapters he covers Relativity and Quantum Mechanics very well. There are others that cover the more basic Newtonian physics also, but I don't have a specific recommendation right now.

I am Rosalind Franklin's first cousin, she discovered the Single DNA Helix Structure. In her Diffraction Crystallography X-Rays work. She was in my opinion not only a pretty woman but a brillian scientist as well, she was not recognised fully in her short lifetime. 1920 -1958.

Although I do realise  that some may disagree with my point of views about her.

I think that as a result of Maurice Wilkins having taken her work out of her lab drawer and showing  her now infamous Slide 51 photo was shown to Crick and Watson, when they saw her work and the Double Helix too, but I am proud of my cousin's work and have been fascinated by her work all of my life.
That is why I have chosen my board name (Rosalind DNA) in her honour.
This is one of my favourite pictures of her. (https://www.thenakedscientists.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi11.tinypic.com%2F8b754cp.jpg&hash=5e1e96f46da04b848c0b335f0411583a)

This is one of my favourite pictures of her. (https://www.thenakedscientists.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi11.tinypic.com%2F8b754cp.jpg&hash=5e1e96f46da04b848c0b335f0411583a)

This is wonderful.

THANK you so much for telling us about yourself and your esteemed relation.

I can certainly feel the pride in your post.

You could, if you felt inclined, create a thread about your cousin. I am sure it would be of much interest here. It would be fascinating to read some insights into the woman and her work.

No pressure of course....just an idea should you wish to elaborate on your pride which shines so full.

Thanks Neil I was actually thinking of doing a thread about Rosalind Franklin
as next year, 2008 will be exactly 50 years since her death so an anniversary of sorts also as the nobel prize.org link shows that the archives will be opened and then her possible nomination will be revealed.
yes you have this perfectly right

I know lots of stuff about the spine and IVF as well as passing fancy's for many other topics.
I used to be a tattoo artist, teacher, theatrical assistant and do some freelance writing.
