Title: Why Does Sneezing Make Your Heart Miss A Beat ?
Post by: neilep on 18/09/2009 11:29:37
Dearest Heartologists,

As a sheepy I of course have a heart and am responsible for the increased heart rate of many ewes ! hearts are my all time favourite bodily organ that pump blood around your body !

Look here's a bona fide picture of a real heart.

A Real Heart Being Very Real.

I recently heard that when ewe sneeze that your heart can skip a beat !!...why's that then ?...what about when ewe cough ? or strain to lay a big dog egg ?

As a firm believer in empirical study I snuk into my neighbours house at 3am this morning and he very kindly allowed me to again sedate him with chloroform. Now, I of course could not see his heart so with his kind lack of protestation I obtained access using a pair of scissors I found in his toolbox. So, with his heart in one hand I commenced tickling his nose with an ostrich feather !  Then I realised, that he was of course sedated.....so.........no luck there !  I whacked his heart back in his chest...it was quite an effort as a bat colony had set up home in his cavity and knowing how protected they are I managed to squeeze it in somewhere below his groin...I stitched him up but could not find the scissors !..oh well !
So, can ewe help ?..why does a sneeze make your heart miss a beat ?

I'd really like to know this because it's something I have always wanted to know since hearing about it a few minutes ago !

hugs & Shmishes

Hello sheepy :)

My best guess is it is to do with the Valsalva manoeuvre, it is used in cardiology to stop  attacks of SVT ( supraventricular tachycardia) where the heart beats in an abnormal rhythm, I know this because I suffer from SVT.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valsalva_maneuver#Cardiology (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valsalva_maneuver#Cardiology)

With Valsalva's you have to force air into a closed vessel, sometimes your mouth, I have used an empty syringe before as its near impossible to blow hard through those things.

If you think about it, when you sneeze you are forcing air out at a tremendous rate, sometimes it is against a closed vessel, i.e your mouth as you then make the a-tishoo sound.

That is my best guess anyhow  [:)]

Hello Varioly,

Thank ewe for your very interesting post. I am educated now because of ewe.

yes, sneezing does force air at a tremendous rate so as ewe say, I guess the pressure must act somewhat to cause this.

Thank ewe for helping me understand Verily Valsalva, Variloa.

I like the sparkly heart Neily! Pink too! YAYYYYYY!
I too have heard this and believe it is true! They say not to suppress the sneeze as it can cause trouble with the heart also...  I assume for the same reasons mentioned..

I have been reading and people seem to be wishy washy on the subject most say absolutely no skipping of a heartbeat and others claim its possible to delay it with a sneeze and make it change its beat by a tiny bit but never stops it or actually skips a beat.. so whats the real scoop You  Forum Scientists... does it skip a beat or not?
