Title: Should I NOT re-use Plastic Bottles ?
Post by: neilep on 17/03/2008 15:27:45
Dearest Plastic Bottleologists,

Plastic bottles are my all time favourite bottle orientated plastic made thing for keeping liquids in......

Here's some being very well behaved !!

 [ Invalid Attachment ]

But......I just heard that it is NOT good to re-use them as they can release nasty chemicals and cause horrible ailments !!......additionally.......water bottles that have been left in the car and then have warmed up are also not good !!!

Is this true ?

THANKS

I have a PET bottle that sleeps with me. I have not caught any diseases from it yet. As far as I know re-using is fine but don't leave any drink in the car. Bugs will grow in the warm conditions but these come from the drink and, if you've had a big slurp, from your saliva. You can grow some real nasties like this.

If you fear plasticiser leakage try this experiment: go to a typical workplace hot-drinks machine, and request "hot water" in a plastic cup. Smell it.
No wonder the coffee tastes awful!

Back to the original topic, there were stories in the headlines a couple of months back about plasticiser leaking from polycarbonate baby-bottles which folks typically warm in the microwave. I can't remember what the advice or preferred-alternative plastic was though. :-(

If you look at your water bottle they refer you to the recycling number 1 bottles as not being safe to drink from and that would be the bottles in Neily's picture.. It is news we have had here for a couple months too. It does not apply to heavier plastic as I understand it.. You should transfer your water from the bottle to a better container if you do not drink it right away..

But We are told it is only the thinner plastics that are more impervious to heat and break down.... as this plastic ... No. 1 Bottles are being made to decompose quicker for the enviroment which  is why the No. 1's break down so fast.. at least that was my take on it! So we sort the No. 1 plastic and do not pit it in the same tubs because of this.. Recycling centers still take it, but as to what they will do with it I am not sure...

But you are right Neily That is true according everything we have been taught here recently.. Arcata had a huge thing on it for everyone to educate themselves on which plastic qualified as reusable and which we shouldn't reuse!

This is PETRA the PET bottle. She comes on tour with me and helps me explain air pressure to small children.

Yes Neilep it was intentional and you are the first person to spot it, you clever little smutty sheep you. Any chance of a bit of wool as I need to knit some egg cozies for Christmas.
