Post by: DoctorBeaver on 24/05/2008 18:11:51
A connections game. Post the name of a person and the connection (no matter how tenuous or contrived) to the person in the previous post.

e.g. Gandhi

Gandalf because they both wore long, white frocks. Get it?

OK, first name is...

Pocohontas

And to make sure you all understand what this game is about...

David Beckham

Connection:-
Pocohontas had her name changed to Lady Rebecca Rolfe, David Beckham had an affair with Rebecca Loos. The connection is the name Rebecca.

Your turn.

No no no. This is obviously too complicated for you. You have to post a name with a connection to the name in the previous post. In this instance that would be David Beckham.

The Belgrano was sailing back to Argentina and out of the 200 miles

Something that is really ironic, The Belgrano was formerly a USS ship which survived the Pearl Harbour attack.

I think you'll find he was Rear Admiral Nelson at the time of the Battle of The Nile.

From Wiki...

The Battle of the Nile or Aboukir Bay (August 1-2, 1798) saw a British fleet under Rear-Admiral Horatio Nelson defeat a French fleet, stranding Napoleon's army in Egypt. French losses have been estimated to have been as high as 1,700 dead (including Vice-Admiral Brueys) and 3,000 captured. British losses were 218 dead.

Not sure there but I think that a Rear Admiral is the least senior
post to the Admiral that Nelson died.
But Turnipsock was talking about being descended from Nelson as
we don't know his real life surname. Which is what matters.

Quote from: a website somewhere
To preserve his body, it was submerged and pickled in a cask of Brandy. Nelson was much loved, and his courage, skill and gallantry so admired by his crew, that during the dark hours they would creep out and drink from the cask containing his body, praying they would inherit some of his traits.

Anyway, I'm not sure who the connection was with so let's start again from Steve Irwin.

EDIT. I was wrong. I just looked it up & it was Troy Tempest not Steve Neptune.

Henry VIII

OBJECTION, YOUR HONOR! (M'LORD JUDGE - WHATEVER YOU BRITS SAY)
"Greensleeves" is a traditional English folk song and tune, a ground of the form called a romanesca.

A broadside ballad by this name was registered at the London Stationer's Company in 1580 as "A New Northern Dittye of the Lady Greene Sleeves". It then appears in the surviving A Handful of Pleasant Delights (1584) as "A New Courtly Sonnet of the Lady Green Sleeves. To the new tune of Green sleeves." It remains debatable whether this suggests that an 'old' tune of "Greensleeves" was in circulation, or which one our familiar tune is. Many surviving sets of lyrics were written to this tune. The tune is also found in several late 16th century and early 17th century sources, such as Ballet's MS Lute Book and Het Luitboek van Thysius, as well as various manuscripts preserved in the Cambridge University libraries.

A widely-believed (but completely unproven) legend is that it was composed by King Henry VIII (1491–1547) for his lover and future queen consort Anne Boleyn. Anne, the daughter of Thomas Boleyn, rejected Henry's attempts to seduce her. This rejection is apparently referred to in the song, when the writer's love "cast me off discourteously." However, it is most unlikely that King Henry VIII wrote it, as the song is written in a style which was not known in England until after Henry VIII died.[1]

It is widely acknowledged that Lady Green Sleeves was at the very least a promiscuous young woman and perhaps a prostitute.[2] At this time, the word "green" also had sexual connotations, most notably in the phrase "a green gown", a reference to the way that grass stains might be seen on a ladies' dress if she had made love outside.[3] An alternative explanation is that Lady Green Sleeves was, as a result of her attire, incorrectly assumed to be immoral. Her "discourteous" rejection of the singer's advances quite clearly makes the point that she is not.[3] On page 500 of Nevill Coghill's translation of The Canterbury Tales[4] Coghill explains that "green [for Chaucer’s age] was the color of lightness in love. This is echoed in "Greensleeves is my delight" and elsewhere."

Come on Doc, lets make this interesting - as below.

KEYWORD: amphibious

Zachary Taylor => Dwight D. Eisenhower

During the Mexican-American War, the first large scale amphibious landing in American history took place on the beaches outside the walls of Veracruz, where there then ensued the Siege (and surrender) of Veracruz, leading to the closing of Mexico's major port and the collapse of the Mexican Army - thus the victory over Mexico and the addition of what is now New Mexico, Arizona, California and parts of Colorado and Utah to the US territories.

Eisenhower, of course, had a "slight" involvement in thee Normandy Invasion and the subsequent defeat of Germany.

More interesting, eh? OK - Sylvester Stallone.

Dwight D. Eisenhower was American. The American national emblem is the bald eagle. When the first moon landing took place, the phrase "The eagle has landed" was used. Neil Amstrong was the first man on the moon. Vic Armstrong was a stuntman who worked a lot with Rocky Taylor. The "Rocky" series of films starred Sylvester Stallone.

Actually, that is seven links. According to your rules only one link is to be used.

"convuluted" is correctly spelled "convoluted"

The intent was for obscure connections, not convoluted ones.

So, FOLLOWING THE RULES. I offer:

"Sex on-screen"

Sylvester Stallone (The Italian Stallion - http://movies.yahoo.com/movie/1802815594/info) => Marlon Brando (Last Tango in Paris)

The Stallone movie was just a porn flick. Brando's movie was an "art" film.

Native Americans

Marlon Brando was an active member of the American Indian Movement. I'm linking him with Chief Sitting Bull, who was a Native American.

Obscure enough Jim?
