Would it one day be plausable that we produce an engine that uses cells to produce the energy needed to operate the mechanics of a machine?

I don't think so. It would be like comparing horse and buggy to a car. Energy only has to be used when the machine is in use. A horse is a 24/7 liability. And requires many more auxiliary systems. Such as a healthy maintained living environment. And a fart shield.
We can put a machine in the closet.

The proper hardware will eliminate all theory.
