Physiology & Medicine / Is extreme lifestyle changes a primary cause of postpartum depression?
« on: 09/08/2022 15:21:56 »
A new parent has to deal with extreme lifestyle changes: less time for themselves, sleep deprivation, monetary issues, loss of freedom, toppled with a preexisting brain chemical imbalance. How important are these factors in your opinion?

I'd love to get this right.

I would like to see stars circling the supermassive black hole at the center of our galaxy.
- At infra-red wavelengths, it should be possible to see more stars than we can see with ground-based telescopes
- and see how active the accretion disk is now
- By watching nearby stars move over a period of years, we should be able to predict when the accretion disk might fire up again.
Are you sure? There is a theory that seeing too much of a black hole and its functioning may cause insanity.

Me? Brown dwarfs and extra-solar planets.

Also, what already produced image from it do you like the most?

Just Chat! / Do British pubs typically serve restaurant quality food?
« on: 04/08/2022 07:56:47 »
I often hear brits discussing having their meals at pubs, so it must not be that bad.

I went on a canoeing course and fell in love with my instructor at first sight.
I was convinced you... nevermind.

The reason why I am asking this is hard to explain.

Your doctor, with his white jacket, and glasses at the end of his nose, looks at you and says you're dying of ALS or penis cancer or whatever, what fun thing would you insist on doing before your eternal dirt nap?

Just Chat! / Is China really a communist country?

In the urban areas, people seem to be even more materialistic than Americans and Brits. Weddings without a massive dowry are becoming more and more unheard of, and the greatest way to earn respect is by the money you make (or inherit). A huge problem is monk impersonators. They wander and loiter on the streets and when they detect a non-Asian, they ask them for money in return for some good fortune token. They take advantage of foreigners' ignorance that Buddhist and Taoist monks live in temples and don't leave.

The worst would be getting all of them at once.
Of course, Mad Cow Disease may not manifest itself for 10 or 20 years...
Do you have mad cow disease?

Just Chat! / Should a film from 1929 still be copyrighted?
« on: 17/07/2022 13:58:52 »
It took me a good amount of time to colorize and enhance in 4K (frame by frame) a scene from the 1929 debut Marx Brothers film The Cocoanuts. The copyright ai detected and blocked my attempt to post it on Youtube. I am angrier than if I caught someone in bed with my wife. It doesn't threaten Paramount Pictures' profits. On the contrary, it would/will get people interested in their work.

Just Chat! / Best self-defense for women?
« on: 16/07/2022 14:56:45 »
With a disturbing rise of assaults on females, I think any advice on prevention is doing the problem a friggin' service... It can be very valuable to women to know that kicking, punching, or striking a male attacker in the penis is the best method for self-defense. It will literally take the attacker out of commission long enough for the attackee to escape. This of course does not work if there are more than two attackers or the attacker is wearing a penis supporter and/or trained in male self-defense (in which penis protection techniques hold primacy). Your thoughts?

Just Chat! / Is platinum more valuable than diamond?

If no, why do credit cards and memberships to hotels, spas, sex dungeons, etc., put platinum memberships over diamond memberships?

Just Chat! / Incels
« on: 05/07/2022 16:13:04 »
I actually hear a lot of pundits and amateurs talk about helping incels find sex. These people will not be placated so easily. When they do graduate from virginhood, I think they'll just find another issue to be angry and resentful about...

Below is a typical incel message:
I think being ugly and hated by God is why I am an incel. I went on a date last night with a girl named Lisa who I hoped would take my virginity away. But she turned out to be kind of a bitch, so I ditched her and flirted with this other girl at the restaurant, who spurned my advances. I then recalled seeing a construction crew outside the restaurant. So to impress her with my manliness I laid in a vat of cement which dried fast, and am now at a hospital fighting for my life.

Physiology & Medicine / What is the best way to treat hypochondriasis?
« on: 02/07/2022 08:49:02 »
Various medical literature seems to agree on consoling the sufferer, reassuring them they're not dying, and encouraging a full medical research stoppage. I feel like accepting death should be part of the therapy. We're all going to die, and someday that person will have to legitimately deal with it. If we can demystify death we can help them tackle their problem head-on, instead of just putting a blanket over it.

I'm not suggesting putting religion into it, reassuring that they'll go to heaven and be reunited with their dead pets and family members. Just try to have them understand that death is a very natural thing. If there is indeed a Hell and they fearing going to it, let them know that the good news is that they'll not be alone.

Just Chat! / Best oil for frying "fish n chips"?
« on: 29/06/2022 23:42:36 »
I prefer my fish grilled and especially on tacos, but what do the best "fish n chip" chefs in the UK fry them in? Are they typically fried in the same type of oil? Fried fish is popular in Upstate New York where I grew up, because Haddock is plentiful in our lakes, especially Oneida, where the family camp has been located since the 1920s. During the war, my great-grandfather managed to include preserved haddock in the care packages he sent to my grandfather and his brothers overseas.
Anyways, our fried fish and french fries (chips to you guys) are usually cooked deep in canola oil.

Is what caused her twin-engine Lockheed Electra to crash most likely bad navigation when negotiating the unpredictable ocean waters? Aviation was still in its infancy in 1937.

Just Chat! / Should a person be allowed to bring their own vending machine to a hotel?
« on: 20/06/2022 23:32:09 »
I worked at a hotel during college and I recall a guest asking if they could bring their own soda machine with them. Our reply was to the effect of "we have vending machines at the hotel already (candy, soda, detergent, etc.) and it is really unnecessary to drag your 1300-pound machine onto our premises." Apparently one of the reasons our founding fathers fought the American Revolution was so people could have the right to bring their vending machines wherever they go. At least that was his understanding, so he sued.
