A group of Young Earth Creationists (YEC, pronounced "yuck") has come up with the idea that an ocean heated by magma left over from the Flood scenario caused enough precipitation to create glaciers in Yosemite for a few hundred years.  They even threw in some references to mathematical models that might be construed as tangentially related.  Leaving aside the climate problem and scientific dating and evidence for multiple glacial events in multiple places, etc., etc. as Inconvenient Truths, my question is simply this:  Is it even plausible that glaciers could gouge Yosemite Valley in a few hundred years?

I would say yes...it is definitely possible...if you live in a fantasy land with completely different laws of physics.  Or if the mountains were made of marshmallows and chocolate.

But it can happen "quickly" IF we are talking about geologic time. It is generally accepted that Yosemite Valley was formed in about 150,000 to 200,000 years.

A lot of dirt can dug out by a glacier. But not enough to do it in 150 years.

The glacires below are cutting through soft rocks. Granite would be much more difficult to do.

Thanks, folks.  I would have been disappointed if the Institute for Creation Research sullied their fantasies with anything slightly plausible.  It's on a par with the millions of distinct layers of fine sediment laid down in 40 days.
