Title: Winter Jog
Post by: eddirichard on 01/02/2005 15:15:33
I've seen people jog in near freezing temps. I personally think this is crazy. Is there any benefit from doing this? Are they better off doing it on a treadmill?

Why waste money jogging on a treadmill when you can use a perfectly good road outside where the air is fresher and the scenery infinitely more interesting that the wall of a gym ?!

Running around outside won't harm you, but obviously care must be taken not to develop frostbite in any extremities (a doctor jogging in central park New York almost developed frostbite on his penis. Upon returning home he stripped off for a shower, and attempted to relieve the frostbite with a firm rubbing action with his hand. As it was taking longer than anticipated for the blood flow to recover he picked up the latest edition of the New England Journal of Medicine and began thumbing through it. At this point his wife came home and was greeted by the shocking scene of her husband, naked, rubbing his crotch whilst reading the New England Journal. She concluded that he had developed an unhealthy interest in his work... (and this is a true story).

Its just that your body needs a lot of oxygen while you jog out there and breath in this very cold air.

Funny story! Nearly fell from the chair reading it![8D]

If you're an experienced runner and in good shape you can go for a pretty hefty run and not get your breathing up all that high.  Thats why I always make sure to run a lot in the fall; if I'm in shape going into winter, i keep working out through winter, if I'm out of shape, its tough to build taht initial base in the cold cause you're sucking so much wind.  There are things you can put over your face to try to warm the air a bit as it goes in too.

Love the story chris.  Sounds like me (minus the forst bite and the wife) [8D]

Getting started in the cold is the hardest part. Once I get really warmed up I don't have too much problem with the cold.  But if the temperature is too cold, it really hurts my lungs and I give up.

Is it true that the lungs do not expand well when you breath in very cold air?

Also, if you immediately take a shower after jogging out there in the freezing cold will it do any harm to you?

This depends on how cold you are talking here.  If your skin is at or near frost bite, you want to warm it up slowly.... otherwise I don't see why it would.

I don't know, I break out in hives when I exercise in the cold.

Sorry I can't resist the urge to ask... Did his wife think that he has a research fetish?

Some people like to jog in the natural environment than jogging on a treadmill. They love to enjoy the atmosphere, the fresh air.
