I think it might be possible to have digitally modulated transmission of sub-atomic particles that transfer Exabits of information per second or better. Certain sub-atomic particles can travel through any materials in a straight line. A series of transmitters and receivers/detectors could be set up on a global basis to transmit data in a direct line through the crust of the earth.

The catch is that particles that can easily pass through the entire earth can also easily pass through most detectors. The idea could be useful if you could come up with a way to catch these elusive particles.

I agree with you on finding a proper detector. I gave it some thought, what we need is a mass detector. Neutrinos are a good candidate for the subatomic particles. Neutrino oscillate from electron, to muon, to tau, and in doing so exhibit mass, even though they are weakly reactive with matter. Scientists have just built a handheld particle accelerator, so generating a stream of neutrinos would be possible for the transmitter. For the receiver I envision a cylinder in space with four rings equally dispersed along the axis of the cylinder. Each of the rings is composed of six equidistant electrons held in place by magnetic fields. Each of the rings are induced to spin around the core of the cylinder. As a neutrino from the transmitter enters the core of the receiver its mass reacts with the electrons from the cylinder and causes orbital deflections that can be detected by atomic interferometry. Comparison of the deflections from the four rings would confirm the detect. Current methods of detecting neutrinos are not sensitive enough, requiring massive structures buried deep underground. I believe this gravitational detection apparatus could be far more sensitive and practical, giving us a communication channel that can travel straight line distance through the earth itself.

Neutrinos are already streaming through the earth from the sun (some 66 billion per sq.cm./sec). Your detector would have to filter out this noise.

That may not be necessary as the ambient prevalence would merely be a noise floor. The digital modulation of the signal would emerge as a pattern in the detector at predicted time intervals from the source to the receiver and the intervals between rings.

There could be coordinated send receive process, where a set of time intervals would have modulated information and other time intervals with no information or gibberish. Once the receiver and transmitter are synched and have a clear wave form then you could use noise reduction algorithm to eliminate the noise floor and amplify the waveform.

If you were to create a device that could handle the reciept of the acceptable noise floor's size in terms of the earth's noise, it would also have to be sensitive enough to capture the relatively small amount of data that would be transmitted by the user.
