Physiology & Medicine / Wellbutrin or Cipralex?
« on: 25/07/2010 19:49:08 »
Hi all

I sometimes suffer from depression.

About 5 years ago I had a terrible bout of depression, my doctor put me on cipralex and I was ok after 3 months and doctor told me I could stop.

Recently in the last month or so, my depression has returned and now my doctor has put me on Wellbutrin XL 150mg. I feel like a zombie but that is ok because I have only been taking it for a week and it takes a while to work.

My question is : should I continue the Wellbutrin and hope it works, or should I go back to Cipralex because I know that did work for me....

Physiology & Medicine / Time Flies When You're Having Fun .........why ?
« on: 08/07/2010 20:25:11 »
I'm pretty sure I'm wrong, but here is my take on it anyway....

I think that when you are having fun, the brain is really 'engaged' in activity. Because of this over-engagement the chemical balance is tilted and certain functions are hence reduced, and one of these functions is time awareness.

I should also state that other activities that are also engaging but not necessarily fun have a similar outcome, for example : Writing exams is not my idea of fun, but the time really seems to fly because your brain is engaged. And if you have not studied and don't know the work then time seems to stand still cos your brain is not engaged.

Another completely different opinion I just thought of now, is that perhaps it is an evolutionary mechanism that is present for the purpose of promoting brain growth and development, IE : The brain likes to get more evolved and when it is heavily active then it turns off time monitoring so that it can focus on growing and building new connections....\

Physiology & Medicine / Are oats healthy to eat for lunch/dinner?
« on: 07/07/2010 10:14:11 »
Thanks, I definitely 'want' to eat a balanced diet, but I dont know how :(

Could you perhaps post a daily meal plan? That would be very beneficial to me and others I'm sure.

Thanks :)

Physiology & Medicine / Are oats healthy to eat for lunch/dinner?

Hello Nutrition boffins!

Is it healthy to eat oats for lunch/dinner, can it help me to lose weight and will it be safe for my body?

I just want to add that I don't currently do this but I am thinking of it and I will throw in a few pieces of fruit during the day and some protein(tuna/chicken) as well.

I am currently going to gym 4 times a week, but I'm not happy with the results, that is why I want to try change my diet so I can lose weight.

General Science / Teeth brushing technique?
« on: 19/06/2010 01:39:05 »
This is a question about rinsing the mouth after brushing your teeth...

In order to get the freshest breath, should you ....

a) rinse the mouth out several times to get all the toothpaste out ?
b) rinse the mouth out only once or twice so that some toothpaste residue is left inside the mouth ?

Thanks :)

General Science / Could Earth have been home to aliens long ago?

Quite a while ago I read to my nephew a book about a group of teenagers who travel back in time 65 million years and discover, along with the dinosaurs two groups of aliens who have colonized Earth. The two groups are fighting each other for control of the planet. At the end of the story the losing group turns a comet so it will collide with Earth destroying it's biosphere. The "winning" group can do nothing to save the planet and decide to evacuate and the teenagers barely get back to their own time before the impact, skipping all the bad days that followed that event.

I know this was just a story, but Earth has been capable of supporting human life (or something very much like it) for at least 500 million years. Though some of this time might not be what we would call "fun", such as dragon flies with a six foot wing span, along with other nasty bugs of that size (like mosquitoes (insects) the size of the great WWII British fighters of the same name) or predictors like T-Rex. Any of these creatures could be lived with given the proper technology.

Given the sparseness of the fossil record, is it possible our planet was home to thousands or even millions or billions of intelligent aliens in the past?

If humans became extinct tomorrow, what evidence of our time here would still exist in 65 million years? I know there would be some stuff on the moon, but what about satellites? Would ANY still be in orbit after all that time? What about our garbage? Would anything be left that a future race could say "Here is PROOF that this planet had somebody here long ago"?

Speaking of the moon. What will the Apollo landing sights look like in 10s of millions of years?

65 million years is a very very long time.

That sounds like an amazing book!! Pls can I have the title??? please??

This book came from 1 of 54 titles. Part of the Animorphs. Sorry can't remember which title. It was over 10 years ago.

From what I remember the book wasn't that great. You might like it if you're 8.

haha lol :) thanks :)

Sounds really cool though, but I guess it's not for adult reading :) I love those kind of stories though :)

Hmm interesting, that does confirm my research as well. I dont think it is possible, alot of people also say that privacy issues are involved with that...

Thanks RD

Just Chat! / Singing Notation documents?
« on: 23/05/2010 14:05:36 »
Quote from: graham.d on 23/05/2010 13:57:10
Do you mean something in addition to musical notation? Music is written both for accompaniment and also for singing, and in the same notation. If you get music for choirs to sing (for example) each part (Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Bass) is notated appropriately. The composer can use whatever he chooses to annotate these parts though there is always room for interpretation. I don't think there is anything specificly different for singing compared with any other music. Really modern musical notation is built on more ancient notations developed by monks for plainsong etc. so was primarily invented for voice rather than instrumentation.

Thanks Graham, I think thats what I'm looking for.

I am less than a newbie in music theory, and I think what you talked about seems to be the 'done thing'.
What sort of search term could I use to find the musical notation of songs?

FOR eg : If I wanted to look up the musical notation for 'Everything' from Michael Buble, how would I start?

Thanks again, u are definitely putting me on the right path here

Just Chat! / Singing Notation documents?
« on: 23/05/2010 13:09:15 »
Hey there

Is there any notation available for singing? Like the guitar tab documents or piano documents.

EG: If someone writes a song, and they want to tell the singer how to sing it then he/she will need to use a specific notation won't they??

What is this notation called and how do I google it??

EG : Which words to sing loud, which notes to hold, fade ins/out etc...

ur help will be appreciated  :) :)

Interesting question.

I suppose evolution and efficient design have a role to play.

HAHA LOL!

There is a very fine line between reducing clutter and inducing confusion :)

I have a strange fascination with music, and I would love to know what your 3 favourite songs of all time are?

Don't worry if its a song that is not popular, because as long as YOU love it then that's all that counts.

I'll start with my 3

-Waiting on an angel - Ben harper(live at mars concert)
-The boy's gone - Jason Mraz (Live on Earth)
-Secret smile - semisonic
