Physiology & Medicine / Re: Spots, smoking and the feminine coil.

that book by Dr Allen Carr 'the easy way to quit smoking' is very good. it helped me and it helped lots of people i know. the only problem is that it makes it so easy to stop that a lot of people start again in a year or so because it is so easy to quit. once you have stopped you really cant have 'just one'. and why would you want to?

sad how you use that one to get attention. but really that is what i wanted to ask about. a friend of mine who is quite concerned about this has asked me to pop on and ask all you brains if you had any answers. she has had one child, after the pregnancy she breast fed for about 16 months, so far normal. after the baby was weened her breasts went back to normal size but she was always able to squeeze a little milk out. she continued to be able to do this for about 7 years until she go pregnant again. she had a miscarriage at 12 weeks that had to be medically aborted but the lactation then stopped. about a year later, out of the blue it started again. she showed me and though it is not much there is definitly little drops of milky liquid.

she is concerned because she also has very long gaps between her periods (av 35-7 days between) and very unusually light bleeding. i had heard that the long time between periods was due to high level of a hormone (cant remember the name of it) and that this can reduce the chances of getting pregnant. just recently she has been trying to get pregnant and is not having much luck, but this lactating thing has also started.

anyone have any ideas that i can pass on to her?

Physiology & Medicine / Re: compatibility in fertility

surely it could also be to do with stress and phsychology. it does seem that the body is quite responsive to what a person believes and if a couple are having trouble conceiving and this becomes a big problem, leads to more stress, less chance of conception, more trying and stress, less love, less chance of conception...... you see where i am going. this could go on for years! then imagine the relief when you are with another partner and all of a sudden you are not worried about whether you can get pregnant (because you either secretly believed it was the old partners fault or you have now given up on the idea because you believe it was your fault) then WHAM, no stress, lots of fun and you're pregnant!

thanks qpan, will have a sticky at it tonight. what you have said aligns perfectly with what i thought i knew.  it has just been about 10 years since i was reading it and i wasnt sure if it had become a personal myth or if it was real. good to know that i imagined it correctly.

really weird thing happened to me last night on the way into london from heathrow.  was on the train and trying to change my sim card, dropped it and a very handsom man picked it up for me. we got talking and it turned out he was a 29 year old scientist from perth, australia! on his way back from the states. and this after only hours before entering on this thread! [8D]

unfortunately it also turned out that he was married and had a 10 month old baby[:(]. oh well. it was a prettly cool coincidence though [:D].

at the risk of sounding cheesy..... what about if you live in the uk, particularly near nottingham? but i am more interested in the older types (read 25+)...... though i wouldnt say no to a younger man...... i get very bored with guys who think that their suit and mobile phone 'says it all' and who talk about nothing more interesting than their latest DIY project!

i guess in some ways you can call it a hypnotic state, if you define a hypnotic state as being when you are accessing the subconscious to a greater extent and with purpose. i know that when i tattoo or paint, i zone out and in some ways it does feel very much like when i have undergone hypnosis.

or when you are accessing the right side of the brain, the side associated with spacial response and abstract thought. is this correct about the right (as in right hand side) side of the brain? that it is used more with these processes? i read that some where and whenever i have read about hypnosis or subconscious thought it is always said the right side of the brain is where this activity seems to come from.

however i certainly do agree that the amount of brain activity during certain states is no form of proof of a soul. and yet i am not sure that the soul does not exist? maybe it is just a tendancy to want to believe in magic, to make life more interesting?

i really dont like the white tailed spider in auz. it is very small (about 5mm long including legs) and when it bites you can get gangrene in the area, i have a friend that lost 2 of her toes through this, and eventually if not treated it can lead to septicemia (sp?). does anyone know what the poison is that causes this and how it works, does it coagulate the blood or something?

Physiology & Medicine / Re: Does bipolar depression affect brain mass and IQ?
« on: 12/08/2004 10:16:20 »
hi there again, have just remembered some sites that you might find interesting, it gives you an idea how common depression is and you can read what other people are going through and see that you are not alone and that the other people who are experiencing the same sorts of things are not loosers. the first site is aimed at teenagers and you might find that it is a bit young for you, however it is fun and self explantatory, it also gives you some idea how cognative and behavioural therapy work. the second site is more of an information base, it has links to other sites around the world, one called bluepages is especially good if you are based in the uk. the downside of both these sites is that they are based in australia (hence how i know of them, being australian myself), however like i say, they are very informative and can help you find links to sites based in other contries. hope that you like them, i know that when i was depressed it was very hard to try to be analitical about anything, much less anything that involved making myself feel better, however, it is worthwhile trying. on one of the sites, i cant remember which, there is is list of different types of treatment and an overview and assessment of how they work, this is very interesting. also remember you can write talk here anytime.

alteration does not mean different area, it means difference, and in your example the difference is in the amount of energy used, nothing else.

how does that prove or disprove anything? all it does is show that there is an alteration in brain activity and therefore an alteration in perception. just because we percieve it as being a truely wonderfull or extreme experiance, when there is no one there to witness it and no physical evidence of an event, with there is no proof of experience.

however, when it comes to last words i think of the little speach my father gave to me when i was about 7, "if believing in a god, a soul, destiny or any other such thing makes you happy and allows you to see goodness and sense in your life, then believe in it. because if none of it is true then your beleif makes not one jot of difference to anything but the quality of your life".

i had visions of nylon stockings hanging in doors and windows and flapping in the breeze. a little like the old flypaper rolls. urgh!!! they were scary. all those dead little flys just stuck there, some still waving their arms! one of the worst jobs i had as a kid was to get up early in the morning during autum and drown all the flys. when it was cold at night they would land and then get so cold they would not be able to move so i had to go around with a bowl of water and a dustpan brush and brush them off all the surfaces into the bowl where they would drown. fly soup! ok honey, so i was one of those kids that went for counselling, at the time i wished that i could have gone outside of school, and this is probably a good idea, see if you can find someone to talk to that is not connected with school. apart from this, the councelling at first made me feel yucky too. after a while though, i realised that that was just because there were some very stupid people out there who told me that i should never need help from anyone else and that i should have all the answers without having to ask anyone. much the same people who told me that school was the best and most important days of my life. absolute cr*p!

so i went for counselling, in my case it was for bullying, the weird thoughts and fear came later, a good counsellor will give you options, they can help you determine if you have an 'illness' (and then help you sort it out) or they can help you figure out why you think like you do and again help you sort it out. it sounds like you have had some pretty serious stuff happen in your life and you need someone to help you sort through it all and figure out what to do with it. that is the wonderfull thing about our minds, we can learn to change them, change the way that we think about things and see things. this is very hard to do when you are on your own, it is like being inside a box and trying to find the way out, but when you have help from the outside it is much easier.

neilep was right, you do have friends here. if you ever need to chat you can come on here or send me an email.

and dont worry about school to much, school smoool, it is just a place that they send us to try to fill up the box. you have a whole life ahead of you and in that life you can be anyone you want to be and do anything that takes your desire. it is just a matter of how you think about it. the other really good thing about accepting help from people is that it allows to give help to others, and that is a wonderfull thing that makes you feel real good.

General Science / Re: If everybody jumps, do we all survive ?
« on: 04/08/2004 10:47:14 »
equal and opposite reaction. however the mass that you are pushing against and landing against is heavier than the mass of the air, hence the reason that you move upwards. so surely if every one stood on one small area of the earth, say england, and jumped then we might have some small effect on the earths trajectory?
