I was wondering if you knew how the old insert image works on this forum version, it creates some kind of code but i don't really know what it wants you to do. In other forums, it gives the option to upload images so they actually appear on your post... wondering if this might be possible as it will brighten up the forum if we can get some piccys on to compliment what we write, or even for fun caption competitions etc...

The 'code' you are referring to is the tag that defines a picture URL. This means that you can insert a link to a picture which will be displayed on the page, but only if the image is available online somewhere. So if you know the URL to your image, you can post it.

It isn't possible to past images directly into the forum.

Exodus, why does it say that you were in Lake Nicaragua on May 18 when there's nothing posted there from you?
Title: Re: Error Log - Post site problems here
Post by: Exodus on 19/05/2003 14:56:42
To make it easier for people to either search for a specific subject on the forum OR when someone searches for it on the internet, i changed the title to "Lake Nicaragua", i believe before it was something like "can anyone answer this...". It just makes it easier to find info on a specific subject. I have changed a few titles in this way as well.

Around 2-3pm today (approx)...the site was inaccessible...and then when I did manage to log on, it was painfully slow....perhaps there was maintenance happening eh ? Obviously it's ok now ,and letting you know this now is probably pointless !!

Strange - I was in bed then (it being our night time) - but the server is usually extremely quick. Perhaps it was your provider (ISP) experiencing a busy period, or a batch of viruses ? Did you compare other sites to see if they were equivalently slow ?

Even from my present location in Australia the service is lightning fast !

Can't hear the radio shows or interviews. It isn't just me either; a friend says they can't either. Doesn't work on Windows Media Player or Real Player (just re-installed real player and still no luck). On Windows Media Player it just never starts, and on Real Player it looks like it's playing but there's no sound. My volume is up and is not muted.

:(

Ps: You also seem to have some non-working and dodgy (to ad sites) links on your news bit (general & bio science sections IIRC)

Thanks for letting us know about these points. Have you been listening via "latest show" because that takes its feed from the BBC. As the show is currently between series there is no audio to hear !

However, if you visit the archives - http://www.thenakedscientists.com/html/shows/archive.htm see if those shows work. I know there is a problem with the 1st Feb. show (the audio file has been lost) but the others should work. Please bear in mind that some firewalls will not accept streamed content - the NHS, British Antarctic Survey, and Babraham institute are three such institutions.

Let me know if it is still not working and I'll make more enquiries. Has anyone else had this problem ?

Yes, this is a frequent problem with large databases on Snitz. I've checked the snitz homepage and many people report this.

An alternative to using the forum search is to use the whole site search and add "discussion forum" to the search terms. Here's a link to the search page http://www.thenakedscientists.com/html/search.htm

I've noticed a few times in the last couple of weeks that sometimes people make posts which show up in the "latest posts" section and make the folder show pink to indicate posts I haven't viewed, but the post itself is invisible in the forum.
Today's example is a post from neilep at 19:59 today on the Just Chat / To pull or not to pull thread. The other one I noticed was comments by PhirePhly (sp??) on atmospheric gases.
I don't know what's causing it, but I'm assuming the post's there somewhere...

Rosy, i think I might have the answer.....if you make an ' edit'  to an existing post it still shows up as if a new post has been added. I did in fact edit my post on the To Pull or not to Pull thread just only a few minutes ago, just before you posted this error log.......

I'm sure that's the answer.

Neil

Yeah some form of live chat would be handy.
maybe beyond the scope of this software though
Title: Re: Error Log - Post site problems here
Post by: chris on 25/07/2005 09:57:10
The problem with a live chat system is that it is precisely that - chat. Here all of the discussion is preserved for the benefit of others, and moderated to ensure reliable content. It's possible to build in a chat module, but I think that might be deleterious to the forum overall, except under certain circumstances such as live webchats with interesting people who are guests on the radio, for instance.

As to the 'who is online at any given time', that also is feasible I think, and a great suggestion. I'll have to look into that. I believe there's a mod for it.

I had included a URL within a post of the form http://www.dict.org/bin/Dict?Form=Dict1&Database=*&Strategy=*&Query=mutation.

This url was wrapped in url start and end tokens (i.e. url within square brackets) so:

http://www.dict.org/bin/Dict?Form=Dict1&Database=*&Strategy=*&Query=mutation

It seems as if the asterisks in the url, while they are still there when the post is edited, seem to break the url when it is simply viewed.

Looking at how this post is displayed, it seems as if the url without the wrappers works ok, but actually breaks because of the wrappers.

At least 5 or 6 times a day I find that when I return to view the page of active topics (which I leave to update automatically) that I'm faced with just a blank page....also, often, when posting..it takes ages to respond and finally says that ' the host is not accesible ' etc etc..the inability to access the site lasts around 3-5 minutes..sometimes a little longer.

I think the site is finally trying to tell me something (uh oh...paranoid mode)

Yep, had that.  It seems to be suggesting that the system is overloaded, and the ASP scripts are taking too long to execute.  Either speed up the ASP scripts, or increase the timeout value in IIS (IIS is assuming the ASP script might have got itself into a permanent loop, but given the script works later, I suspect this is not the case, and is simply taking too long to execute).

Also, sometimes have had timeouts when posting a reply.  Went back, and resposted, and it worked OK.  The system simply appears to be overloaded.

Yes, the problem is that we're running from an access database which is not stable at high loads. All it takes is a few search engine spiders to start tucking in, and a few users too, and the whole thing grinds to a halt. On one particular day a month or so back three search engines arrived simultaneously and the whole thing just collapsed. Part of the problem was the gut-bustingly large zetacap thread ! Once Neil administered a liberal dose of forum-slimming liposuction (aka the delete button) everything calmed down again.

We're actually going to migrate over to a much more stable mysql db at some point, but I'm currently just too overloaded to be able to do it.

As for chat, why not just create a room on 1 of the established chat sites like Lycos?

Fairly meaningless.  I never formally logout, so the system will permanently show me as logged in.

Any web based protocol has no real notion of someone being online.  It knows when someone has logged on, when they choose to log off, and when they last posted.  It is then a matter of guesswork if someone who logged on 3 days ago, and has posted within the last hour, is still sitting at their PC (or even if the PC is still switched on).

Why are you so wedded to Microsoft technology?

There may well be arguments in it favour on a desktop, but for a web server, I would have thought Linux/Apache/MySQL would be far superior to Windows/IIS/Access.

OK, the even bigger problem is that Access is a single user database, and totally unsuited to a server based application where many people can log in at once.  Even Microsoft does have multi-user databases in its product catalogue, but they cost significant amounts of money, and don't really give any advantage over the open source equivalents (MySQL and PostGreSQL).

Is it just me but I get sooooooo frustrated because the site becomes unusable....I keep on getting the famous 404 error log or it just time outs, or something similar..........usually 3 or 4 time an hour. I have to be so careful doing long posts , having to use a text editor, but there are times when I just ' go for it ' ...all to my cost because I would say 1 in 5 time after pressing ' submit' it just halts and all is lost. It usually takes a few minutes and then it's up and running again.

Thankfully, I now use word to create posts in

How about a chat and a PM service ?....one thing that has been a long standing slightly frustrating tool is the search facility tool at the top of the page.

I would have thought, given the instability of what we have, it would be more important to stabilise what we have before thinking about adding more to it.

The extras may be nice, but put them on a stable system, and don't simply add more burden on an unstable one.

Hi All

yes, we need to stabilise this forum urgently. I have a way to do it, but it's quite involved (because we want to minimise disruption to people during the changeover).

I'm on the case, but please try to grin and bear it for a bit longer.

Search-wise, although the function appears to time out, if you hit the page refresh button after your search times out, suddenly all the results will appear!

What data base engine is being used? Perhaps the size of some of the diet sections could be slimed down. They seem to be a site within a site.

What you do speaks so loudly that I cannot hear what you say.

I wish it was as easy as that...the zeta thread once stemmed to over 90 pages !! (yes it really did) and the site was still working reasonably well... I do not believe that this is the cause at this time. It must be something more fundamental in it's technicality with the site

I'm sorry about this. I think it stems from the fact that we had a bit of a run on the podcasts because we published the first one since easter and immediately 10,000 copies (200 GB) went flying off the shelves in about 6 hours. It seems to have slowed everything down enormously.

I think it's lots of computers all trying to download the podcast simultaneously. iTunes is probably the cause because it touches the rss regularly to see if there's been an update and as soon as it detects one it tries to grab the files...

Hopefully we're over the worst of it now.

It must be the podcast downloads as it happened all of a sudden, and because me and neil have been quite ruffless recently and slimmed the database down by quite a lot.

Thank god, back to normal.

Seriously guys I'm looking into ways around this. The problem is that:

1) The bandwidth for this operation is now about 1.5 Terabytes (TB) a month - that's 300-500 GB per week. Most hosting plans offer you about 50 GB a MONTH!

2) This forum is ASP driven and is running a notoriously unstable access DB. We have done tests and can migrate it to a mysql database, but it still requires ASP. That way we also keep our incoming links and all the content. But mysql is much more stable.

3) If we wanted to move it to another forum platform we'd lose our links and it would also mean users would lose their logins / passwords. We've tried to get round this and it's not possible.

4) Moving hosts is a nightmare so we really want a UK based company so that we can phone them up and sort out any problems.

5) We're about to do a radical site overhaul anyway (because this version is archaic and totally static (excepting the forum), making it very inefficient. With this in mind we're sourcing the best CMS that fufills our needs. Once we know what the server requirements will be we can find a host and then move the whole shooting match across.

If anyone wants to help / knows someone who could help, please ask them to drop me a line.

Best

Chris

Actually, what I am going to suggest might be somewhat unorthodox, but I'm not sure that it would be impossible to do.

The asp links that people have are just names.  I cannot see any technical reason why Apache (I cannot say for IIS) could not map a request for an ASP URL to a piece of code that it is instructed to use the PHP module to interpret.

As I said, highly unorthodox – but if you have control over the Apache control files, it might be possible.

It depends whether you are simply running under a virtual hosting plan, or you have full control over the configuration of the web host.

It should definitely be possible to maintain the links even with a different program - you could even tell apache to run .asp files through php, but it will take some work...

So what has happened so that the site is working OK now ?...(it's still a little temperamental though this afternoon)...it was quite a sudden transformation of performance, surely the pod casts just didn't all stop..just like that !...What is it that actually makes it so unstable ?

Title: Re: Error Log - Post site problems here
Post by: chris on 27/04/2006 21:46:04
the podcast was definitely to blame - 20,000 copies (300 gigs of data) in 2 days - was suffcient to bring the server down to a crawl. I think iTunes was trying to grab the new content from thousands of computers everywhere, simultaneously.

I'm confident we can sort this out. Dave's on it (when he's finished writing his grant applciation!)

We have slimmed down the operation manyfold to restore functionality, but we urgently need to get the hosting sorted out. I'm engaged in negotiations with several companies at the moment. I'll keep you posted.

mmm, this was a problem. Interestingly, some of the aliases worked - such as www.nakedscientist.com, but not others.

I phoned the host - LCN - and spoke to someone who sounded terribly disinterested and who informed me that it must have been an "ISP caching problem".

This is a big retrograde step for LCN. In fact the reason I stuck with them for so long was that their customer service was always excellent. I sad to say that our days with LCN.biz / lowcostnames.co.uk are most certainly numbered.

I don't think it's a person at all....could it be some kind of sophisticated advert bot or something ?

Surely, after having the threads deleted so many times, a human would give up creating all these threads...fortunately...I caught the last lot just one minute after they were created...

Clicking on the arrow in the 'Last Post' column normally takes you to the last post. But, since the upgrade, if there are more than two pages to the thread, it does not work! (Same applies to this thread)

Any chance of a fix?

About time we had the new foum up and running but I know dave and Chris are very busy...

Well I would like to report that everyday for the last 3 days or so I have had trouble with timing out.. Usually lets me in intially but then upon trying to post or refresh or go back the bloody thing times out! Has been lasting 5 to 7 minutes at different times of the day!

There are times if I go up to my address bar and x the site out and then hit one of the old site links that are there in my browser history, then the possibility is greater that I get back on and it works better! so weird....

I HAVE HAD TO WAIT HOURS TO POST THIS !!!

KAREN MAM, you are NOT alone !!

Would you believe it has taken me three attempts to post this. The site has decided to have ANOTHER breakdown as I write this post about the breakdowns !![:)]

The site is awful in it's performance. I am getting fed up with writing long posts and then having them get lost in the firmanent that is the Internet Void...fortunately I copy and paste into Word before pressing submit.

It's taken me three minutes just to get to this thread to post this...well..172 seconds !!..YES..I a actually timed it !! (apart from the fact that I couldn't post this at all for a few hours !!!)

People are going to leave in droves if they can't post or are even more frustrated when they have written a lot and it's then lost !!...Especially newbies who don't expect the forum to not work !!

What is the reason for the transfer delay now ?...It's nearly October  !!..Please can we have the transfer soon !!

I think the mistake from the beginning was ever to assume that the migration would ever happen on schedule.  The problem has been the attitude that since we have a new system just over the horizon, we can ignore maintenance of the present system.  This new system is no different to so many others, just over the horizon is a mirage - there is always more testing, and more work, than anyone anticipated when they did the back of an envelope calculations (particularly when people are trying to do so much in their spare time).

Yes, I think we can regard that as a major outage - and the pity is that I see no explanation or apology for it.

Furthermore, it would have been nice if at least the moderators had been kept up to date with progress regarding what was happening, so that if others asked of us what was happening we could actually give them some useful information.

Sorry if it was down yesterday, I didn't notice it.

I don't think it was a maintainance issue on our part. I think there were a load of problems with our hosting provider as I know the new sever that I have been developing the new site went down for a while (along with their homepage), but www.nakedscientists.com seemed to be ok form where I was sitting. It is entirely possible that it was a horrible problem that appeared differently from different places. I will ask them what was going on.

Could you e-mail me if there is a problem as I don't think I am checking it as often as some.

There was apparently a problem with the firewall that all the traffic went through yesterday, partially caused by the volume of our podcast traffic. The server is being moved outside the firewall as I type, so hopefully things will improve.

Gaia, That is exactly what it did to me.. I could also get to homepage but when I hit the science button, it would take me to a white page with a subject heading, but never open up.. other attempts, just timed out!! No Access!! I tried for hours without results, fell asleep on Keyboard literally and was surprised awake when I opened my eyes it had been over and hour and my idle mess was up on screen I unkinked my nect and hit forum on my historyand boom so fast my head spun... things were working better then normal, much faster then ever, I really only hit the enter button and took my finger off and the forum was up!!that fast, i kind jumped as it made a funny noise like a crackling as it opened up! I was extactic , but so darn Tired.. I posted till around Two AM. California time...10:00 am Uk time!

Dave Would have emailed you, except did not have your email as I use the profile to email through! Couldn't get on to get to the profile, I guess I should store them on my computer...eh?

It will be exciting to use the new version tomorrow night, as I see dave says the switch over will happen between 9:00 and 12:00 BST tomorrow, is that AM or PM it did not say! OK, Dave I finally got on this morning at 12:12 AM ! I was able to post for awhile and explore a few of the new options for us moderators. Then as I tried to look at my own profile, I was suddenly signed out as if I had logged off. I logged back on and went to my profile as if I had hit a wrong button or something, then it wouldn't open my own profile, it just shot to a page time out once a gain. I tried several times with the same result. having to hit the back button. I was able to go back to where I was but not able to access any other features, re: posting etc. kept saying page fault time out, something like that!!

So far this morning ok, but this is all I have done so far! [;)]

I'm really not too keen on the default font !!..it's too squashed looking !!

Is there a way to change it for myself ?..I can't see a typeface setting in my account settings/options/preferences....though I have seen the font icon in the posting section....but that would only effect mine wouldn't it ?

you move the sliders at the right. The top set are for the colour of the lines, and the bottom set for fill colours. You have to move them before you draw something.

You may have read in that thread that I quickly found a workaround - although the fact that the workaround works at all implies that there may be hole in our blacklisting mechanism.

I was simply posing the message as a single dot, and then went in to modify the message with the intended text (using the inline modify option rather than the preview option).

If I did not trigger this faulty blacklist code by that way, it implies that the blacklist code does not check for modified code, only the original posts.
Title: Error Log - Post site problems here
Post by: daveshorts on 11/04/2007 16:50:54
The blacklist is a list of slightly altered regular expressions, the wikipedia page added an extra line at the bottom that looked like:
[[Category:]]
which I think was what was causing the problem - I am not quite sure how this was being parsed as a regular expression, but when I deleted it all was well...

Not an error, but a slight problem and suggestion:
On long threads and particularly the very long threads, like  Question of the Week, it is a long way to go, to get to the current topic or post. Have you thought of arranging things the other way round?.
Perhaps the introductory question could be at the top but the current posts would be easier to find if they were near the beginning.
I bet you get this suggestion all the time and have considered it - if so, sorry.

You can go directly to the latest post.

If, rather than clicking on the thread title, you click on the icon on the right that looks like this: (https://www.thenakedscientists.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.thenakedscientists.com%2Fforum%2FThemes%2Fnaksci%2Fimages%2Ficons%2Flast_post.gif&hash=bc42c57a06cb4576485e566b5039e425), then you will be taken directly to the most recent post in the thread.

Or you can click onto any page of a thread, next to the title there's a row of numbers which are all links.

It doesn´t tell you when your post gos over the 20,000 chacters, and you can loss you info if your not careful; could it not be possible to either give a warning when the limit is reached, or increase the post size?
Title: Error Log - Post site problems here
Post by: Karen W. on 24/06/2007 16:50:15
I have never had that happen.. You could write it in word also, but maybe Dave could help.. I am not sure about the mechanics of that as I have never experienced that! In the mean time you could put it in a word program and maybe split it into two posts..until we find out! THanks Jolly for letting someone know!

20,000 characters is over generous. If you or anyone is seriously submitting a post of this length then i would suggest the following:

1. always save your text before posting to either a word (microsoft) or text document before posting, should you encounter a problem, you will always have a copy of your text.

2. split the post in to two posts.

3. to post such a large post, i would assume that it is full of quotes. if this is the case then slim down the quote, any part of the quote you are not directly replying to can be omitted and substituted with; ...
Title: Error Log - Post site problems here
Post by: another_someone on 25/06/2007 02:53:09
I have gone over the limit, but I thought (it was some time ago) that I was given a warning when it was too large.

But, as people have suggested, any large submission like that I will always first create in a separate document (Open Office rather than Microsoft Word - but the same idea, just my own preferred WP).  Even if I were to type it straight in, and lose it, I would normally be able tp recover it key going through the 'back' key on the browser until I get to the page where I created the post.

Post by: another_someone on 25/06/2007 03:04:21
Incidentally, one thing I have found is that the rules about size limits seem to be more relaxed when modifying a post than when creating a new post (so, if i want to create a large post, it is sometimes easier to create a smaller post, and then click on the in line modify button, on the bottom right of the post, and then insert the larger chunk of text into the post).

Have split the discussion on WP's to a separate thread (http://www.thenakedscientists.com/forum/index.php?topic=8538.0) to prevent cluttering the error log.

Yep, we have a problem - I see it too.

The web links seem mostly to be links that are elsewhere on the page, but are inappropriately slipped as well in between table rows.

Not sure there the suffonmycat is from, but seems associated with you, Neil.

I am seeing the stuffonmycat only on threads that you have contributed to (as far as I can see), but I see other web links appearing on other threads.

They are displayed (as you indicate with your screen shots) just above the message list, but looking at the HTML source, it is inserted in the source on this page just above your message 110938, and similarly embedded between messages in other threads.

Title: Error Log - Post site problems here
Post by: another_someone on 31/07/2007 04:19:24
Neil, as I said, it was not down to you - the choice of link was down to you, but the fact that a link of some sort was appearing erroneously was not down to you - not least because now that you have removed your link, a different link has appeared erroneously.

Neither can I (quote posts) - we have a site that is in serious trouble.

It has either been hacked, or more probably someone did a last minute fix to the site before going home, and did not adequately test that the fix did not break anything.

I am also noticing that some links are just $1 and not the full url.

for example the Forum News.

"The Naked Scientists have received TWO nominations in this year's podcast awards. Voting starts 28th July. We URGENTLY need your votes for Best Produced and Best Science and Technology Show...$1

Please support us"

This is happening a lot in admin and moderator posts, especially Rosy's! If you check the last posts of Rosy, you will see all her links are "$1"

Another thing I've noticed is that if I'm downloading while posting here, POST doesn't work; my Firefox twirly circle thingy doesn't even go round. I have to click PREVIEW then POST from there. It doesn't happen on other forums I use.

I find it extremely infuriating when I'm uploading photos to the server.

When I finally succeed sometimes the piccy has uploaded a few times.

Just to let you know this is not the same as hot linking that you do with photobucket....I'm talking about the upload thing under Additional Options !

I can rarely get that feature to work right for me! Once in a while but thats it!

Yeah Thats how I feel too about that option.. although I used it once today and after several attempts did something right and it worked.. But I could not repeat it when I tried another photo!

I actually find it very useful...especially for people who can't seem to see pictures which are hotlinked (Dan/Mirage for instance).......it's easy just to reduce a picture in size and then upload away........when the systems working right that is !!

Unfortunately it's a recurring theme here. Though, it has been better behaved since this newest version of the forum came live.

It is being investigated.......and hopefully a resolution will follow.

It is clearly 18:11 UK time right now, but TNS website insists it is 19:11. Has caught me out several times and got me panicking that I'd lost an hour! Is there a reason for this time-anomoly, or am I just caught in a time-warp?

When I'm reading through the main forum menu the screen keeps jumping around. I presume this may be something to do with the alternating messages at the top of the screen. I don't usually have problems with messages like this but when they make the whole screen jump it is rather annoying.

Its not really a problem, but a spelling mistake instead.

In the Fact/Fiction section theres a question:
Island of Hawaii is made up of a volcano?

The answer:
It's True Hawaii is actually a string of islands each of which is a volvano.

Since I am a complete newbie at this, I hope i've found the right place to point it out [:)]

Dearest TNS techy people...well Daveshorts!

Do you think we could fix whatever is wrong in the biography bit on users profiles? There is lots of random things put in with it, I spent ages fiddling about with mine but I still can't get it to read properly.

I'll use the Beaver's as an example

I have a PhD in psychology from Cambridge, a BSc in computer science from Brunel &amp; an MBA from the Open University. My speciality is addiction/dependence. I am interested in all aspects of science especially particle physics and cosmology. Although I don't understand the maths involved in relativity &amp; QM I understand the concepts &amp; enjoy discussing them from a philosophical point of view.<br />Oh, I'm also totally off my trolley!"

I think it might be to do with punctuation, with mine I found I got different bits and pieces up according to which punctuation I changed. It's not a major thing but it makes it difficult to read about other folk.  [:)]

@Variola:  If you thought the last typo was FOG worthy, then check out this one:

White bread and the wonder of enzymes

"Take half a slice of bread and chew it and chew it and chew it! Even if the bread becomes disgusting, you should still keep chewing amd remember - don't swallow or you'll spoil the experiment!"

I do realize that typos may be of much smaller priority than Bug Fixes or other enhancements, but I thought I'd just point it out anyway.

You are really getting in the FOG mood aren't you DrC  [;D]

I'm still baffled as to why the biography on user profiles reads in a strange way.

Amd.....that's my sort of typo!!! One I would often be caught doing. Hence I get fogged into oblivion on here!

Post by: DrChemistry on 20/08/2009 19:48:06
I think I should give myself a surname. DrChemistryFOG. Sounds good to me [:)]

I checked what could cause the weird biography and I think it happens because of the following reason:

The Text Area allows you to make newlines, however when it is inserted into the database it only recognizes text (probably because of the settings of the table in the database. If that is the case changing TEXT to VARCHAR [talking from a MySQL point of view] might do the trick. I can check that once I find time to do it), and hence the breaklines are turned into the text version of that very tag. The profile page can only display text and not html tags, it therefore posts the message just directly from the database without recognizing the html code. The biography should be stripped for html tags and then replaced with tags that would work in that very system.

That could be the problem, although I fear it is not that simple. That is my best guess without having a look at the code. But I think we can leave that for the Admins [:)]

Is it possible to prohibit "newbies" from posting hyperlinks?

It is important to reference material and sources...  but, what about only allowing users to do so after say...  5 or 10 posts?

For the Newbies, also prohibit using words like http, https, com, www, dot, etc.

Of course, it could backfire and cause determined individuals to fill up the site with multiple posts of garbage  [xx(]  But, with any luck, it might discourage some of the spammers.

Now, that's odd.

Click on "My Posts" in white, under NAKED SCIENCE FORUM header and it takes you to a couple of pages of recent posts.

In black, there is a sub-header:
The Naked Science Forum - My Posts

Click on "My Posts" again in this second level (BLACK) header, and it takes you to "Recent Topics" instead of refreshing the "My Posts" page.

However, this is a chronological "Recent Topics" list, which is actually kind of a good format, perhaps easier to use than the "Recent Topics" arranged by category.

I found an excellent review article about AIDS and HIV that was "blocked" by TNS:

I'm not sure how it got on the list....  should the site be blocked?

For some reason, today I am having a lot of problems opening the page:

http://www.thenakedscientists.com/forum/

Which in many cases is the main shortcut to the forum.  It is in the hyperlinks on the left side of the page.
I see a perpetual busy symbol, with nothing happening.  It doesn't refresh, but doesn't see to time-out either.

However...

I can open most other pages just fine, as well as:

http://www.thenakedscientists.com/forum/index.php

Which takes me to where the above link should take me.

Maybe it was this then, the upcoming hardware failure that crashed out tries to connect? Or is it something totally unrelated, as in the software?

But it's been so for several months although lately it was worse. I first thought it had to do with TNS going through itself, cleaning up so to speak, but I don't know?

BTW: Dave, really well done, restoring the last two weeks or so. Losing one day won't kill us.

There still seems to be some problems posting on the forum.

I have posted this logged in through IE.

Smiley faces don't seem to work and posting a picture from my own files can only be done by using alt+s on the keyboard. This results in the post being submited, rather than the picture being added to the post. If I then go to 'Modify post', I can only post modifications before the picture, not after.

Take this shot of my recent adventure into the skies:

EDIT
Strewth! Now I can't even see that! What's more this edit will doubless come before where the pic should have been.

So now, I will try the same post, this time logged in through Firefox.

EDIT AGAIN
Ah! The picture just appeared, but I can still only get that small pic shown off the attachment, not the picture in the body of the post.

OK, here goes again, this time with Firefox.

Right, here I am again, this time using Firefox.

First off, is it me or the forum running very slow? I am having no problems loading pages on other sites, but TNS is very slow.

OK, so back to the original problem.

I'll just cut and paste the text of my previous post and try the smilies and picture attachment in the normal way.

Again, I could only upload the picture by using shift+alt+s on the keyboard, which submitted the post, not, as used to be the case, insert the picture at the designated position. All I see is the attachment at the bottom of the post, and this edit will come before that.

Now for a smiley picked from the forum's own listed smilies:  >:(

Somehow I get the feeling that only the code >:( (I just typed that in) will appear. Lets see.....

The square brackets do prevent accidentally creating an emoticon, e.g.

without the brackets " (score 8) " could appear as  " (score [8)] ".

"Preview post" isn't working the last few days : it gets stuck ...

e.g. whilst logged in , go to the advanced post editor here ...
http://www.thenakedscientists.com/forum/index.php?board=3;action=post2
then click on "preview" ...

"Fetching preview..." is displayed , but the actual preview never arrives,
( i.e. it gets stuck on "Fetching preview..." ).

Maybe this fault is specific to me ?

[ BTW whilst on the advanced post editor page the characters "array()" appear in the top left corner of the screen,
and  if the browser is refreshed on that page, the screen monetarily goes white,  it didn't used to do that ]

Since the recent make-over,

when one adds a new post one is taken back to the top of the page, not to ones newly-added post.

Also the "may contain nuts" disclaimer at the bottom of the screen ...

"Information presented on this website is the opinion of the individual contributors and does not reflect the general views of the administrators, editors, moderators, sponsors, Cambridge University or the public at large."
is not fully visible , and apparently is creating an unnecessarily wide screen ...

I think there was a big push to get the update out a couple of months ago.  There were quite a few pre-release bugs that were fixed, but apparently the development mostly stopped once it was released.

I don't think anybody mentioned the disclaimer.  I'll add that to the list of things to look at.  Links jumping to odd places were mentioned earlier.

Overall, a lot of things were fixed.  We got the Greek back.  We got the emoticons fixed.  And, the new pages blend well with the website.

...The previous (convoluted) way of linking to other posts in the forum will now not work.

Over six months since the above post , the problem described still not fixed :(
it is not possible to link to a specific post in the forum ,  the link which should do that takes you to the top of the page that post is on , but not to the specific post.

e.g. here is a link to a post I made half-an-hour ago ,,,
http://www.thenakedscientists.com/forum/index.php?topic=52894.msg445358#msg445358

If you click on it you are just taken to the top of the page it is on , whereas the post is on the bottom, (Reply#35 in that thread ).

A convention used on many forums to make it clear to whom one is replying is to use the "at" symbol in front of their user name. However, when I attempted to do so here I discovered it was a blacklisted 'word'. Why?

I presume it is to exclude email addresses from posts, but there must be a better way to do that. No?

Re: The recent introduction of embedded YouTubes in posts.

Embedded YouTubes are not visible unless one signs-in to TNS :
There is just a blank white space where the embedded YouTube should be,

e.g.  http://www.thenakedscientists.com/forum/index.php?topic=60728.msg [Reply #2]*

If for some reason that must be the case,  the YouTube URL should be shown instead of the blank space, otherwise readers who have not signed-in have no idea the post includes a link to a YouTube.

[ * I'd have given a link to the specific post, rather than have to give the Reply #number , but linking to a specific post has not been possible for over a year ].

With the "Modify Profile" Option in the Member's Profile 'control panel' it isn't working properly. When I make the changes I want and then click on "Save Settings" the next page says: "The website cannot display the page" and I do not believe my changes took.

That was the only problem I had setting-up my Profile.

Bit bored, so I thought, in the absence of conversation, to put my bug reporting skills to use for your new website.
(I am using Iphone4s, Safari.)

1:  The 'view the most recent posts on forum' page, next to 'stats', is not registering all posts.  It has been the case since you first switched over.

2:  When pressing 'go back to previous page' function (phones operating system) the site throws back in time occasionally, where the thread one is looking at has the views and posts only up till a time, or even a date that is in the past.

3: Since you put the adds on again, I am getting 'problem with page' message that initiates an automatic reload, where the reload also seems that it can sometimes result in problem 2.

4:  When opening a 'new topic' and posting new topic, I get a white screen.  I have to 'go back', (phone function) and use 'home' function to get back to the relevant topic's board and click on thread to see the 'new topic' I have posted.

5:  When making a post on an already opened thread, if I lose phone connection, (I'm reduced to hotspotting my sons phone), when reconnected and I refresh page, it has taken me to 'start a new topic' page.  Fortunately this is just a case of pressing 'back button' (phone function), and as long as this doesn't result in problem 2, one finds that one's post is still there to be posted.

6: Very occasionally, when posting to an already existing thread, 'error' message appears and one's post doesn't post, and then the post button is disabled.
The only way out is to go 'home', back to topic board, click on thread and start again.  (Remembering to copy and paste before you do this is a good move...sigh)

7: While making 'this' post, the page has had 'problem with page' and automatically reloaded 4 times.  This problem has only started with the recent addition of the adverts.

If I notice anything else, I'll be back.
Title: Re: Error Log - Post site problems here
Post by: timey on 18/02/2017 15:45:11
I'm back:

Problem:

8:  When posting to a thread there is a problem with font sizing.  The site automatically resizes the font that is copy and pasted into the posting window, but sometimes it only resizes part of the post, leaving differing font sizes on the posted post.

Thank you very much, Timey, for these helpful points and observations.

I'm working on all of these bugs. I'm aiming to have a completed, better behaved, version of the forum ready to go very soon. What I don't want to do it release it prematurely before it's working properly and then mess people about.

Since you have functioned the home page button to arrive at podcast picture, the 'recent topics' page has become dis-functional.  I have noticed that it is intermittently neglecting to refresh one of my threads 'Is there a discrepancy with the equivalence principle?', New Theories, to the recent topics page when a new post is posted.

Thanks for the feedback; the layout is actually the same as the previous formatting, only the colours and text sizes have changed.

Regarding not being able to post, I'm going to need a bit more information on that; what exactly is the error? What situation? I'm not seeing that problem myself, and no one else has reported that.

Why is there a policy change about who can follow the links given in a discussion?
seems to me as a short sighted idea, increasing the number of participants short time, while limiting the reading pleasure for people just wanting to browse the site? Meaning that I don't expect new readers to subscribe by locking the links we give.

You raise a good point.

However, I thought it was worth auditing whether this would translate into more users; if it does, this benefits the community as a whole. If it doesn't, then we'll discontinue it.

I think there are two issues to the idea Chris, and to this site. One is the entertainment value for the casual reader, I'm guessing there are a lot of people that, by several reasons, just might browse us without becoming a member. That should work for advertising reasons, assuming a revenue of sorts for the TNS.

The other type of people are those that may feel that they have something to say, or just want to argue for fun, or correct something.  In this later case I don't expect locking a link will give them a stronger impetus to join, rather the opposite.

My view is that the causal reader most often will get frustrated, and look for something more straightforward. when it comes to the others? I'm not sure, but looking at myself I probably would look for something else.

How did you attempt to do it? The system has been updated, so maybe the technique you used wasn't quite correct. If you tell me what you did I can either look for the bug (if it exists) or put you on the right path.

When posting a couple of wiki links with text written in between them, when I'm logged in I can see the 3 paragraphs of my text between the wiki links, but when I'm logged out I can't, which renders the post as unintelligible.
I've deleted the second wiki link to rectify this anomaly, but it is your 'you have to be registered to see links' that would seem to be also obscuring the view of the text written between in addition to the links.

I think I know what is happening; because there are multiple links in the piece - I am guessing - then the algorithm that finds and replaces the links is truncating between the two bits of linked text; I need to make it greedier! I'll work on that; thanks for the feedback.

I noticed that the forum is continuously transferring data from external websites I don't visit. This happens when adblockplus is disabled in Firefox. Any ideas what's going on?

There are some CDN (content delivery network) references, which supply bulk thinks like jquery and fontawesome; there are also ads which are imported in real time from ad networks, including google. These are the external requests that you might have seen. They are harmless and pulling data into the page rather than sending your data to anywhere else.

It's about revenues right? And connecting everything someone write to everything else. What it makes for is the slowest site I visit on the net. If you really want people coming here it at least should update fast, and I don't **** care about doing internet on a phone. A pretty stupid idea in my view fitting only those that feel that constant need to be 'connected' and overachieve.

As I see it, this site is getting slower and slower, and more and more incomprehensible for the casual viewer.

Chris, you, or whatever defines the role here, should define the new direction of TNS. And if you believe yourself, aka TNS, to have the competence also the credentials of your chosen ones. In that way you will become a conservative force for the good of 'everyone' curious, depending on credentials. Apparently I am not alone in being unable to insert an uploaded image into a post ...

... You can insert the images into your posts (rather than just attaching them) if you click on the "insert attachment"; then the picture is displayed in all its glory in your post. I've edited the ones above to do this for you.

For me "insert images into posts" has never worked in the new forum.
I can upload an image, so it's attached to a post, but clicking on "Insert Attachment" does nothing.

Hi @RD

Thanks for raising this. I don't think there is a bug, I think it's just not as obvious as it could be. Sorry for that.

Please try this:

1) Create a new post

2) Click the "+attachments" button below the posting box

3) Click to choose a file and select a suitable e.g. image file

4) Click within the posting box or type in some text

5) Click "Insert attachment" - You should see "attachment=0" appear within [ ] in your post in the cursor location.

6) Click POST and it should save with the images in line.

Please try that and let me know if it works. I just tested it with a dummy junior account and it worked okay...

A convention used on many forums to make it clear to whom one is replying is to use the "at" symbol in front of their user name. However, when I attempted to do so here I discovered it was a blacklisted 'word'. Why?

I presume it is to exclude email addresses from posts, but there must be a better way to do that. No?

In your honour, @Ophiolite - this has been implemented!

I've blown the dust off of Internet Explorer (9), no add-ons : no joy.
Firefox ESR 31, (in "safe mode" = no add-ons), the same problem persists.

The cursor in the post-box stops flashing (it disappears) when I click on either ...

So that they have been clicked-on is being recognized, but no image is being inserted.

Hi @RD as you'll have seen above, I'm struggling to reproduce what you are seeing. I've just used a random computer in the office, logged in as Amelia, who has new-user account, and posted the image from chrome, firefox and IE9.

The Iron, FireFox & Internet Explorer browsers were all run without any add-ons, aka extensions, (those can block javascript).
For completeness I just tried to repeat the exercise in Linux : FireFox 45, addons disabled,  still no joy.

Hang on, this could be it :
when I click on "(Insert Attachment 0)" it causes the tickbox for the attachment to toggle: checked/unchecked/etc.
That shouldn't happen.

I remain confused and perplexed by this; this is what it should look like when you make a new post / reply, click "+ Attachments and other options":

 [ Invalid Attachment ]

Once you have chosen the filename you should then be able to click "(Insert Attachment 0)" underneath the "choose File" button and it should go in.

...Once you have chosen the filename you should then be able to click "(Insert Attachment 0)" underneath the "choose File" button and it should go in.
For me, on Windows, clicking on "(Insert Attachment 0)" causes the attachment tickbox to lose its drop-shadow, as if it was being pressed ...

But if you look at my screenshot you'll see that there is no "uncheck the item you want to remove" message.

Have you tried inserting the item from scratch when you first post the message?

Try this:

1) Click "reply" (the blue button at the thread bottom).

2) Type "hello Chris" in the post box

3) Click "+ Attachments and other options" (below the post box)

4) Click on the browse filename box and select the filename for the image from your computer.

5) Click the "(Insert Attachment 0)" green wording directly below the Choose file box you just clicked.

Hit POST (bottom right).

I'll be very interested to see what that does...

One thought - you've not got some really ancient historical cache running have you? Like some ancient js cached away from the old version of the site?

If you run the browser incognito mode, with a clear history, does it still play up?

The three* browsers I've tried are all set to clear-the-cache when the browser is closed.

Apart from not being able to insert images, I've not encountered any other problems when composing a post.
Maybe you have privileges in the forum which mean you can't reproduce the problem:
e.g. some measure designed to stop spammers is inadvertently restricting the functionality for Jo[e] Public, but not for the webmaster.

That's a good thought, but that is the reason why I logged in as Amelia, with a newbie account, to check, and couldn't replicate the problem.

It's a really simple bit of javascript that just inserts attachment=0 into the post! I am surprised that it plays up so badly...

Okay! It must be a settings-specific problem that is a legacy of the old system. There is a way to solve this, but it would involve resetting everyone's accounts to defaults. The "defaults" "should" be the same for everyone anyway... I will try it over the weekend.

Don't risk disrupting everyone's accounts if it's just me being affected.
I can just use the new RD-2 account, that's the easiest & least-risky option.

Well Chris, I might have been over reacting there, but I got awfully frustrated by not being able to post a new question due to the disappearance of the 'logo'. Don't know what changes you made there but I definable prefer a simple text button or similar, telling me 'create question', instead of some logotype telling me nothing. And I do find a problem with this site updating very slowly as I go back to the questions others made, sometimes extremely slow. And it is specific to TNS, don't have those problems with any other site.

Anyway, I started to wonder if the missing 'link' to 'post a question' now meant that we had to make them through some moderator, which indeed made me blow my top, as zztop express it. And for that I'm sorry, not as much as you would like probably, but that's life, isn't it :)

What really pi**es me of is all those functions I need to allow to get this site to work. Using Noscript (Firefox) I think it should be enough with me allowing TNS. The old one didn't need any of it to work. Then again, possibly it failed in some other areas, but none that I noticed. And it was fast Chris, this is no longer a fast site.

And yes, no 'global possibility' to turn of smileys, changing the layout of all I've written before. Small things maybe but irritating just the same.

Might not be just you... thanks for taking the trouble to explore this and try to fathom it out. I will see if there is a simple reset.

If it buggers things up I can restore from the DB without losing anything as long as I do a DB dump immediately before the tweak...

Thanks for writing back. Actually, this formatting and site is, on average, a lot faster than the earlier edition, and it doesn't go through page-realignments and clunky render-blocking formatting before it displays material. So, actually, it should be a better user experience than the old one.

I wonder if it's that it takes a little while to get used to something new, and we were all well-used to the old layout?

PS - I'll see if I can put in, specially for you, a New Topic button at the screen top that will then ask for which board you want to post into... that should make it even easier.

Sorry Chris, sometimes I write a lot, and I do not ignore people, you're definitely one of the good guys in my book. But those days I'm working eleven hours or more a day, at a average, so the few times I write is when I manage, one way or another :)

This week I took of just to get some time to fix personal stuff, and that's also why I found the time to nag :)

I'm not joking about the time it takes to load a page though, and I've changed provider finding the same thing to be. You might want to blame it on my version of Firefox, but I don't expect that to be the truth.

Without Ad-Blocking, viewing TNS is much slower than other forums I use.
Some of those forums have adverts, but those Ads don't have animation or video, which uses lots of CPU & bandwidth.
Here's a TNS page in FireFox without addons, (so no adblocking), basically stuck at ~55% CPU ...

* animated adverts means high CPU.gif (306.13 kB . 800x575 - viewed 14101 times)

Constantly using ~55% CPU makes navigating the site very sluggish.
For me viewing a TNS page with adverts blocked, CPU usage is <5%, once the page has loaded.

Thanks, @RD-2 - I must admit that I've not noticed a problem on my machine (I do my testing on an ancient laptop, although I mainly use chrome), and my net connection here is not the fastest. I suppose it might reflect the kinds of ads that you are being shown... if I've not been receiving a heap of videos then I might not have experienced the slow down to which you've been subjected. I'll keep an eye on it. I'm doing tweaks all the time, so I'll make sure we prioritise keeping things as slick as possible.

PS - I've got a way to merge accounts, so I can try to transfer all of the posts and rep from RD to RD-2 for you, and then rename RD-2 to RD, in case there are some other legacies of having an old account, if you like?

It's not a browser specific problem : here's the same high-CPU on Iron browser, (aka chromium),

* High CPU in Iron browser (aka chromium) no AdBlocker.gif (619.54 kB . 643x532 - viewed 13602 times)
(The graphs are ~100 seconds wide).

Without Ad-Blocking, navigating to a different* TNS page is like playing Russian-roulette:
the adverts shown will change, they could be animated ones which use so much CPU that further navigation is like wading through treacle.

With 'NoScript' it doesn't matter if I block scripts or not, the 'delays' are still there when I go back to the 'tree' instead of reading a 'limb', I think it has to do with the server 'pushing' those adverts possibly, but I'm not sure. Or maybe it's the severs around TNS that are so persistent 'pushing'. But it's no fun on the receiving end.
=

The weird stuff is that sites like the Guardian, which have a incredible amount of 'connections' that I block, don't present me with those delays that TNS do.

As I say, it might have been a caching issue - maybe the page load was interrupted temporarily during the creation of your local page cache and that caused it?

when I log in as nonmod test account I can only see 1st post on each page of the thread!

Okay - I've now tried similar and I see what you are seeing; not had that happen before. Something is truncating the thread; it's not happening to other threads though, so it's probably a bug with the locked threads for logged-in non-admin level users.

Another one for my list of jobs... Thanks for reporting it @tkadm30 and Colin

I cannot use the RSS feed of the recent topics in the forum. The feed XML markup is missing the "link" element for some entries.

Thanks @tkadm30 - can you please post a screenshot of what you are seeing.

I have had to play with the feed  bit to prevent it being populated with some inappropriate content. It may be that some of the absent items are intentionally skipped (things like moved posts and deleted items).

You're welcome chris :)

Sorry @tkadm30 I cannot make head nor tail of the material on the link. It would be really helpful to have a graphical screenshot so that I can see what you are seeing; this will give me more clues as to what is going on.

Sorry @chris, I cannot post a screenshot of my website because it may contains material unsuitable for the audience of this forum..

It happened to me with a different image - the baby one you posted. All after the pic was inaccessible on that page.

The truncation in the tread I've l mentioned terminates in a YouTube video.
So the truncation problem could caused by embedded YouTube videos / images.
( In a previous incarnation, this forum had special code not show YouTubes unless the person was logged-in ).

If I read this locked thread https://www.thenakedscientists.com/forum/index.php?topic=71558.0 without logging in it looks ok. Logged in as mod it looks ok. Logged in as non-mod it is truncated after the 1st post on each page.

i found a minor glitch with the forum. Currently, there's no way to add tags to a new thread while creating the post. You need to first create the thread then click on "Add Tags" to associate a tag...

Thanks for reporting this; that's strange - it should just work. No idea why it's doing that. I'll investigate.

New problem: ads on thi page were okay until some day, when they began to be bigger. Big so much, that it covers the content.

Thanks for letting me know. I'll keep an eye on this. If you see a repeat - and you can take a snapshot of the offending ad and upload it, that would be a big help.

Cheers - Chris

Please record below any problems you come across whilst visiting the site. Please try to give specific details which will help us to fix the problem.
my first visit to this site using a mobile phone and i found your site via moblile phone useless and annoying because of the adverts from google covering up type in boxes . I was unable to create a new post in the normal manner because of the adds. The only way I can make a post is by quoting existing content   . Thanks but I do not think this site is for me with all the adds.

@Swanzy
Hi there!
🙋

The ADs placed by GooGle are really Irrelevant & Very Irritating.

Sure i can ignore them & move ahead...

But the placement or positioning of the Ads is such that it neither allows me to fill in my nickname or my password.

Even when i Close(X) the Ad window...it still remains there as a blank box.

This feels kind of Weird...
Am i the Only one who logs in thru an android device?
Nobody else facing a similar issue?
Any Advice?

P.S. - Review Tab is Not Working.
(Thankfully the Modify option is still Available.)

Re-Edited (Both the Issues, the ADs blocking the Login tabs & the Preview tab not working have been ReSolved)
I have posted Solutions for the same in Guest Book, within the
" Thank You Very Much " thread.
👍🙏✌️

P.S. - i forgot how to copy the link of that page & copy it here.
