QotW - 19.10.27 - Can mosquitoes tell apart blood groups?
« on: 28/10/2019 12:57:56 »
Vinnie asks:

"I have read mosquitoes have a preference for blood type, and prefer people with type O blood over those with type B. But prefer type B over type A. Is this true? And how do they know the difference between types?"

Can you help him out?

Type A is the tastiest to mosquitos. https://www.treehugger.com/health/7-reason-mosquitoes-bite-some-people-more-others.html

If you are pregnant, or hot and sweaty, or been drinking beer after hill walking they are more likely to go for you.

I suspect it is far more complicated than that.  I know they always went for my father first, and deer flies as well, when they'd leave the rest of us alone.  My daughter now seems to have inherited this 'attractiveness', and she has the same blood type as myself, so it's not necessarily that.

My father ended up on chemo therapy for a while, and once he did that (even after they stopped with it), the bugs no longer went for him at all.  They can definitely smell the good stuff, and not just say detect CO2.  Yes, mosquitoes definitely have a sense for CO2, but not sure what attracts deer flies.
