welcome, hope to see you post lots! It's a friendly forum, slightly nutty at times, although I think some of our fruitier loops are currently taking a break - time for you to get hooked before they come back and scare you off!

Also ... I might see a question that I want to know the answer to, so I look to see if anyone has come up with a good explanation.

Ooh, there is another person in the world who goes loopy over eyes?!? I have a recurring dream where a dentists tooth scraper thing is used to scrape away the whites of the eyes. Horrible.  [:o]

I assume you're English, living in France, non? Can't see any other explanation for putting your daughter into an England shirt!

Physiology & Medicine / Why did I not recognise myself in the mirror?
« on: 09/12/2009 23:05:26 »
Thanks, had no idea there was a term for that!

Not dyslexia though - not in the normal sense of the term anyway. Most of my family have it, so I can recognise it - when I have these difficulties it's for words like 'and', 'was', 'there' etc. Having said that, by the same score, most of my family have it, so there may be a tendency to it to a certain degree when tired I suppose.

Interesting thought that the brain may pick and choose which functions to shut down temporarily when tired. I wonder if any research has been done on this? Perhaps preoccupation or strong focus on something could do the same kind of thing?

Doesn't the body do much the same thing in certain circumstances - e.g. diverting blood from the skin to digest food, secreting pain-killing hormones for 'fight or flight' response, etc? basically allowing it to divert its energies into what it 'thinks' is the most important?

Physiology & Medicine / Are germs from other peoples poo more dangerous than your own?
« on: 09/12/2009 22:56:33 »
There are many different strains of E.coli, with varying degrees of virulence, and I don't know, but I doubt very much that anyone has for example E.coli 0157 in their normal flora.

The other possible explanation is that the bacteria are harmless when in their 'correct' environment, but become harmful when they enter a different tissue or organ that is not adapted to deal with it. I can't give an E.coli example, because I don't know much about it, but enterococci are not considered pathogens because they normally reside in our intestines, but they can cause serious infections when they make their way into skin and soft tissue.

General Science / Does homeopathic medicine work with animals?
« on: 09/12/2009 22:41:49 »
I guess that depends on whether there is a better alternative out there. For many conditions, of course there is, so I would have to agree that it would be highly dubious at best to withhold the proven treatment in favour of anything unproven, homeopathic or otherwise. If the alternative is nothing, then I can't see a problem with trying anything, as long as it is unlikely to cause more harm.

I wonder if this is a similar kind of brain block, albeit more profound and infinately more disturbing, to one i get relatively frequently where I can't recognise words on a page, or where I can't remember how to spell certain, very simple, words? It generally only lasts a few minutes at a time, but is quite odd! I generally put it down to being tired or a bit run down. It doesn't really help explain anything, but was just a thought!

I can't open this at work - will try later when I'm at home, but the one I saw was Britney Spears on youtube. Shocking.

Cells, Microbes & Viruses / What is a 'Pandemic'?

Does it have to infect a certain number of countries to be classified as global, and therefore as a pandemic?

Cells, Microbes & Viruses / What's it like to have the swine flu (H1N1) vaccine?
« on: 07/12/2009 22:27:41 »
I'm still not sure what I had. I started feeling ill on the thursday late afternoon, and it really did feel like flu - not actual cold symptoms. I felt hot and cold, my muscles ached, and all I wanted to do was lie down. In fact a man asked me if I wanted to sit down on the tube - I was holding on to the rails with my eyes closed and swaying slightly!! Went to bed and stayed there for nearly 24 hours. didn't feel like eating particularly. Could barely move, and you know it's bad when my phone bleeps and I can't summon up the energy to read the text!! I started getting more 'coldy' symptoms later on friday and saturday morning, but nothing much. Went back to work on monday but was a bit out of it, and my nose started to run later that morning! Cough developed a day or so later, and it still around a couple of weeks later!

It seemed too bad for a cold, and not bad enough for flu, but I had flu one summer (seasonal, but in July!) about 10 years ago, so I wonder if maybe I have a level of immunity from that?

« on: 07/12/2009 21:59:26 »
I've just been introduced to the wonders of Antares Autotune, and i'm kinda disappointed.

In my naivety I thought that, short of actual miming, when artists sang on stage, it was their voice you were hearing. Well, apparently not necessarily so. Altares Autotune takes the feed from the microphone and mixes it with the backing track to make it sound half-decent, so, correcting bum notes and the like.

This generally only works (apparently) when there is a backing track to mix in with, so I've been told it's unlikely to be used with actual bands, with real guitars and drums etc. Phew.

General Science / Why do potatoes have a high glycemic index (GI)?
« on: 07/12/2009 21:46:49 »
Starch is polysaccharide, so it's made up of long chains of sugar molecules (glucose). When it's digested, it's basically turned into sugar, hence the high glycaemic index.

I'm with Don on that one. Either that, or we'd have to deep freeze the body while I studied forensic pathology.

Personally, I sometimes click on a question if I'm not sure if I might be able to answer, so on reading the full question, I sometimes decide it would be best left to someone else.

Just Chat! / What will the near future have in store for us?
« on: 03/12/2009 23:36:56 »
Ah but beauty is only skin deep. Us Brits have beautiful internal organs.

Considering not so long ago, it was predicted that there would be one computer in every country (!) there's a good chance anything we come up with will be a gross underestimate!

I think Face/off will become reality (but hopefully restricted to the medical profession for facial reconstruction, rather than id fraud for the criminal underworld)

And gene therapy will become good enough and cheap enough to be widely used.

It's a shame. I read though quite a few of his posts (but not all) and I can't see how anyone could have done anything more for him!

I don't understand Nizzle's 'modify option' comment - am I missing something? Or just being a bit dense (as usual)?
