In general, 'black boxes' refer to something, often a physical piece of equipment but sometimes just a software program, where the internal method of operation does not need to be known or understood for it to function or be used; it just does what it does without any intervention, taking its inputs and, where appropriate, producing its outputs autonomously.  I believe the etymology of the term 'black box' comes from the fact that no 'light' need be shed upon its internal workings as an understanding of them is considered to be unnecessary.

Aircraft normally have two bright red/orange coloured 'black box' recorders, these being the Cockpit Voice Recorder and the Flight Data Recorder, and I believe that both are normally mounted towards the rear of the aircraft to give them more protection in the event of a crash.

The Cockpit Voice Recorder is intended primarily to record what the flight crew have been saying immediately prior to an accident (I believe they constantly retain the last 30 minutes) but they can also record radio transmissions that are heard in the cockpit and also any other noises audible in the cockpit.  The Flight Data Recorder records the state of the aircraft, in terms of flight control inputs and readings from the various monitoring sensors i.e. joystick movement, engine and flap settings, fuel levels, airspeed, bank, Angle of Attack, air temperature etc.
