Title: Water in My ear...how long will it last ?
Post by: neilep on 21/12/2006 19:58:08
Last week I had a very nice shower.. (after all it is Christmas  [:)]) but it was a power shower and water went up  my left ear canal...Now..over ten days later it is still there causing me grief...it feels like when you're in a airplane and it's really annoying..it also crackles when I blow my nose !!

Ouch !

Won't it eventually dissipate or evaporate or other thing than ends in 'ate' ?

Have you tried lying on your Side ear slightly lower the boylike over edge of bed.. allow it to drain.. It really doesn't sound like water in your ear, It sounds like fluid behind your eardrum. Do you have a otoscope available to you! I have one but it won't help you here. Sir when you hear that squishy sound, you are describing what happens to my Son when he gets fluid behind his eardrum... Mine have been plugged like that for a week, but know squishy noise when I blow.. You may have a really bad sinus infection also as your Eustachian tubes are all involved at this juncture.. Go to the Doctor again and have them check your ears. When you blow your nose does it sort of feel like, ( pardon me ) that snot is coming out of your ears instead of your nose, kind of like traveling across your face when you blow?

My mom used to rinse our ears in peroxide. Sometimes alchhol to evaporate the water.. Didn't sound so good. Johns doc always had us clean with peroxide and then use some ear drops if it was just water.. another thing after showers because of high risk of infection with tubes he would have me turn blow dryer on low and blow warn air in ear to help water evaporate quicker!

Thank you Karen...there's no way I am going to the doctor again !!

I don't think I have an infection.

Wouldn't water in my ear also be fluid behind my eardrum ?...it's too much of a coincidence that after a shower where water did go into my ear for it to be something else..surely ?

I will try the draining thing you mentioned and hope it helps.

THANK YOU karen Mam..I hope yours are ok too

No fluid behind your eardrum is usually infection.. If it is just water it will generally drain easily! Fluid can become thick and goopy and get infected.  Your eardrum usually looks really kind of whitish color opalecent.. shiny.. when your eardrum becomes infected it begins to turn pink around the edges of the eardrum itself, which is hard to see with out an otoscope! It also becomes distended and puffs out a bit. If allowed and left untreated this can cause your eardrum to rupture draining all the fluid and infection, but also damaging your eardrum.. My grandmy would boil onions and pour onion juice into the ear.. It was an old remedy for earinfections. She said it worked. I don't know if it had an antibiotic effect or not... but she swore by it! I don't want onion juice in my ear... You really should go if it doesn't get better. try to kep your ear dry..Are you taking a antihistamine like dimetapp that was the recomended one for keeping ears uninfected and drying those potentially infectous fluids from building up behind your eardrum!!

Almost forgot. Keep an eye on your temperature. It will go up slightly if you are developing an infection, at least most of the time that is what I have seen happen.. I am no Doctor but that has been my experience more times then not! I know some people get no fever untill its really bad as your body tries to kill the infection..

Good idea to see the doctor if it's hung round for ages your ear is probably amost completely bunged up with wax and needs a good syringing.  That is unless you are a surfer and are going down with surfer's ear.  But if you were, you would be totally familiar with the problem of water in the ears sinuses and almost everywhere else!

Well, you'll be disappointed to know they could not fit me in....it just so happens that my ear is fine at the moment. The discomfort is very sporadic and I can hear perfectly. It is not bunged up at all...just sometimes ' feels ' like it is. In fact, sometimes, if I am bending down to pick something up..I can feel movement there...

Hmmm !..I think I will ' Play it by ear ' (sorry) and see how it goes over the Christmas period...right now...as I type this..I would say it is perfectly normal.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH IAN ....and thank you too KAREN

Then go to a reputable barber and have the hair clogging your ear canal removed. I really do not like braided ear hair but why you do is beyond me.

Neil listen to karens advice as i once had an infection behind my eardrum ,i was only in pain with a ear ache for a few hours so didnt realize there was anything wrong, two days later my ear drum burst and out came gushing all this nasty yellow gunk.
Which left me in horrible pain and with this weird disconnected from reality feeling for two weeks and deaf deaf in right left ear for six .

Gosh Michael I am sorry about that!! My sons ears were a prime source of problems for us for over 15 years, I got to being pretty good at trouble shooting at least when to go in to the Doctor!! It is worth its weight in gold to go to a medical supplier and purchase an otoscope for veiwing the ears , especially if you have children.. as ear infections come usually at the onset of colds , when fluid build up is so prevalent!! There are other times also and other reasons too. But knowing what a healthy eardrum looks like , shiny whitish opalescent! Not pink or red, is invaluable to keeping your ears in tip top shape!! Don't poke things in your ears!

ALRIGHT BUSTER! YOUR BUSTED!!! LOL LOL

This comment is contradictive of perfectly normal, and it is also funny!!
First you said it doesn't feel bunged up all the the time, it is very sporatic! LOL ( as it will be with fluid filled ears) Hee hee hee!

Then you say, just sometimes it feels that way! LOL infection must build gases and such behind the eardrum... which then applies pressure on eardrum, which can happen quite fast! Then pop like a balloon when pressure and fluid build up is more then the drum can take... Then owie!!!! LOL Really no fun!!!

Yes, bending over shifts the fluid around and is perfectly normal to feel (IF YOU HAVE FLUID BEHIND YOUR EARDRUMS OR TRAPPED IN YOUR EUSTACHIAN TUBES ETC!!) LOL It is not the norm to feel something sloshing around in ones ear when bending over....!! You said, it is feeling better perfectly normal, and yet, when you bend over you feel movement in there! I say this is NOT perfectly NORMAL!!! LOL ( ME THINKS IN MY MOST HUMBLE OPINION, YOU IS SICK OF GOING TO THE DOCTOR!! YES???) I have been in them shoes of yours before and I see the writing on the wall!!! LOL LOL LOL!!!

Well, I finally went to the doctor today !!

My ear is well blocked (and really quite uncomfortable) and there is liquid there..so...it's off to see the ENT person again for some hearing tests and then maybe the insertion of a grommet !!..I mean why can't they just drain the bloody thing ?...then I have my nasendoscopy on the 24th...and I am getting sooo busy ........arrrrgggghhhhhhhhhh !!!!

I told you so SIR!! I wish men were not so stubborn....!!!!! Are they going to put in a tube. That does sort of look like a grommet, LOL is that what you are talking about! They keep the ear clear of fluid but you usually have to use ear puty to keep water out when you shower or bathe after that, until the tube falls out on its own. That can take months.. I am sorry it is hurting I was worried you would let it go too long!! So sorry.. I hope it gets better fast.. when are they going to do it. The grommet will actually drain the ear, that's what it does provides a exit for the fluid until your ear heals. If they did not put that in, your ear drum would close up and you would build more fluid because it was not healed yet.. Oh so sorry... You should listen to the silly women that was giving you advice.. she has become very good at spotting ear problems eh?? I have had 22 yrs on the job training in severe ear problems.. LOL

LOL... Why are you sorry SIr! I was teasing you.. By the way most tubes are not visible they are put in with a minor sugery that can be done with you awake with just a topical anesthetic basicly..and right in the ear doctors office, at least that's how they do it here. It will be alright! It's pretty short procedure depending on what they do here!! You just have to hold real still. Johnny had his done I am thinking 6 to 8 times or more over the years. The last couple were done in the office... Less expensive and No general anesthetic. I hope you don't need surgery. Perhaps some heavy antibiotics? I wish you well..

You have a busy Month coming up.. just try and relax.. and go with the flow and all will work out!!
