Just Chat! / Hi everyone
« on: 23/11/2017 18:33:37 »
Hi

I used to be a very active member of this community some years ago. I back now look for some help!
Typical I hear you say. Well, yea but please hear me out first.

Since I was here on the regular bases I have become an Author, not and very successful one but yet, or well known outside my family and friends. My first book was a nonfiction book about happiness and how the mind can get in the way it.  I had tried fiction before and got bogged by my own personal stuff.  So I guess my last book was a way to get beyond my own need to express my innermost thought about life and love etc.. LOL

So now I'm back writing like some possessed recluse locked in a house near a bog in the middle of Ireland. Hold on that's me I'm talking about. Now the book is a big fat conspiracy story set in 200 years time or so. There are bodies to be examined and mass depopulations to calculate, as to their effect etc. Right now I am just guessing about most of it. Now, apart from the fact I don't get out too often there just are not too many people I can ask about this stuff. I could say picking their brains but you might think I'm going on about the book again.

So rather than mislead anyone about what I am after I thought it would be better to just say it up front. I am looking help getting the science right behind my novel. Of course, I will acknowledge any help I get and the forum too in the book. It's not much but I cant make certain it happens.

We need content and people who could help answer questions I know its a long shot but perhaps you have an interest in the subject.

If you read this it will give you background to why

Does too much restriction of food intake really slow one’s metabolism?

If so, how much and at what level of calorie reduction does this kick in?

CERN, little bangs, big bucks and what do you get?

Is this the day we will remember as important in terms of our understanding of the universe as any in history or not?

Just Chat! / Twas the night before Christmas

Twas the Night before Christmas

Clement Clarke Moore (1779 - 1863)

Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that St Nicholas soon would be there.

The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads.
And mamma in her ‘kerchief, and I in my cap,
Had just settled our brains for a long winter’s nap.

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.

The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow
Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below.
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a miniature sleigh, and eight tinny reindeer.

With a little old driver, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be St Nick.
More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name!

"Now Dasher! now, Dancer! now, Prancer and Vixen!
On, Comet! On, Cupid! on, on Donner and Blitzen!
To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!
Now dash away! Dash away! Dash away all!"

As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky.
So up to the house-top the coursers they flew,
With the sleigh full of Toys, and St Nicholas too.

And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof
The prancing and pawing of each little hoof.
As I drew in my head, and was turning around,
Down the chimney St Nicholas came with a bound.

He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,
And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot.
A bundle of Toys he had flung on his back,
And he looked like a peddler, just opening his pack.

His eyes-how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow.

The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,
And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath.
He had a broad face and a little round belly,
That shook when he laughed, like a bowlful of jelly!

He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,
And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself!
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread.

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And filled all the stockings, then turned with a jerk.
And laying his finger aside of his nose,
And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose!

He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim, ‘ere he drove out of sight,
"Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night!"

Happy Christmas everyone from your pal Hadrian

Physics, Astronomy & Cosmology / Is there zero zero gravity?
« on: 14/12/2009 11:41:18 »
No zero gravity anymore?

In another topic the a discussion about zero gravity has emerged
http://www.thenakedscientists.com/forum/index.php?topic=27298.0;topicseen

If I am reading right zero gravity is not possible.

So basically talking about zero gravity is a waist of time as it is nonexistent in our universe.   Yet it’s a term we hear a lot.

Where did it come from?

and what would be a better term to use?

Physics, Astronomy & Cosmology / Does gravity affect a magnetic field ?
« on: 07/12/2009 16:28:26 »
Magnetic force v gravity

So I get a small magnet and hold it over a metal pin. At some point the pin appears to defy gravity and rises up to the magnet.

If there was less gravity would it move sooner?

What happens in zero gravity?

Winners versus Losers

The Winner is always a part of the answer;
The Loser is always a part of the problem.

The Winner always has a program;
The Loser always has an excuse.

The Winner says, "Let me do it for you;"
The Loser says, "That's not my job."

The Winner sees an answer for every problem;
The Loser sees a problem in every answer.

The Winner says, "It may be difficult but it's possible;"
The Loser says, "It may be possible but it's too difficult."

I found this on the internet and I posted this up on my forum a short time ago. I thought it was interesting.  Personally I can see the winner and loser in myself in the way I react to stuff.

Do you find this to be true to your experience with yourself and others?

How many species are there?.

We have a better understanding of how many stars there are in the galaxy, better than how many species there are on Earth.

So how many species do you think there are on Earth now and how have existed?

Dying man wins bet he would live

Mr Matthews said he would give most of the money to charity
A Buckinghamshire man diagnosed with terminal cancer is to collect a second winning payout of £5,000 after betting he would stay alive.

Jon Matthews, 59, from Milton Keynes, was diagnosed with mesothelioma, a cancer linked to asbestos, in 2006 and told he had months to live.

He placed two bets, each with a £100 stake at odds of 50/1, that he would be alive in June 2008 and in June 2009.
