Title: Why is the moon apparently uniformly grey?
Post by: @Whittlesford on 30/09/2011 13:01:14
@Whittlesford asked the Naked Scientists:

Is there any colour on the moon, or is everything in shades of grey?

What do you think?

Is the moon really this colorful? In a way, yes. The lunar surface actually does have quite a bit of color, although in reality it is very subtle. In this photograph, the color saturation has been enhanced to bring out the differences in the colors of the various areas of the surface. The hues are correct, just much more vivid than we usually see them.

If you took Earth
Took away all the water, ice, and snow.
Took away the clouds and atmosphere.
Took away all life.
Then covered every surface with a layer of talcum powder.
Earth would also look much more bland.
