Title: Why can I resist everything except temptation?
Post by: neilep on 26/10/2006 18:19:46
*giggles*

There's an experiment that was filmed with hidden cameras that demonstrated how young children have so little control of their emotions...no problem there...it's perfectly normal as it is beyond their capability to control these feelings...their brain is not physically advanced yet to exercise such control......... So, when your child throws a tantrum...they are not really being naughty...they really just can't help themselves....the little bra....erhhmm...Darlings !!!

Anyway, it was such a cute experiment to watch. The child would be sat in a room filled with sweets....They would be sat at a desk and one sweet would be placed on it. Then Mummy or daddy would say something along the lines of " If you can not eat this sweet for the few minutes that I have to go make a call, then when I come back you can have three times as many !!"....all the kids agreed.

LOL...despite knowing the obvious rewards if they showed patience,.two thirds of the children could not resist the irresistible temptation of the tasty sweet in front of them..LOL..sooooooo cute !!

As GRUPS (GRownUPs) have YOU ever been filled with something that has literally made you go neurotic with temptation and the urge to satiate it has been overwhelming to the point where it's like a loss of sanity ?

Are you an impulse buyer when out shopping or just looking through shop windows ?

I have to say I DO impulse buy....when I do do food shopping ...I ususally do it at the worse possible time ...ususally when I'm hungry !!....but I can't immediately think of an irresistable urge that made me lose it !!........and You ?

Whajafink ?

Yes there is, but not a food, but I must say not something I can discuss in a science forum!! Unquinchable indeedy!

By the way Neil if you really hate cinnimon and I know you do, You will not like pumpkin pie as it has cinnimon, nutmeg, allspice, cloves and I think ginger in it, IT is heavenly, but I Love cinnamon although the other spices really blend well and make it scrumptous.. I like lemon pie without the meringue and Blackberry pie is my favorite, then Pumpkin My family love stawberry Rhubarb, Rasberry is delicious. I don't like coconut or chocolate pie.. I love banana creme, seldom eat pies though, maybe once or twice a year on the holidays... Pumpkin pie with real hand whipped cream!! Hummmmmmmm!Yummy!

I'm not a big fan of cinnamin either.  My favorite pie is so simple.  Graham cracker crust and Jello cook and serve vanilla pudding.  OOOHHHHH it's the best.
Like almost as much as studmuffin in those boots.....almost.

I don't know all those delicious things, but, reading about them, I would like to eat them!

About the experiment in the initial question, maybe there is an answer: children are more intelligent than what we usually believe because they understand that, in the real world, is better to have something now for sure than something said to have in the future!
Title: Re: Why can I resist everything except temptation?

Thinking about the experiment, I think it may be related to another phenomenon, that time seems more compressed as we get older (i.e. to someone of my age, a year or two seems a short period of time, whereas to a young child, the same feeling of time passing can relate to a period of a few months).

So, taking that into account, if you were told that you could have something now, or have substantially more in 6 months time – maybe that should be more of the adult comparison.

Ofcourse, and Alberto was saying, we also don't know what the children's past experience regarding broken promises might have been.

Well Yes.  to both questions, and I do impulse by when shopping for food. For other things I am a window shopper, on occassion I will buy something on impulse, not often though!

I don't plan food shopping trips very well, so inevitably there is an element of impulse buy, but I am not in general an impulse buyer (in fact, I am not generally an impulse person).

When I was about 14/15 years old, I saw a book I wanted to buy, cost 14UKP (lot of money in 1971), and it took me a year before I finally decided to buy it.

The flip side of this is that I can sometimes be very bad at decision making, always feeling that I have inadequate information to make any decision, and always waiting to know more before I decide on something.  This certainly applies to shopping, where I will often put off deciding what to buy until I have learnt more about it.  By the time I do decide to buy something, as likely as not I will know more about it that the shop assistant who is selling it to me.

The premise of the program was the development of the human mind and how the physical make up affects the decision process at key ages.

They did another experiment which was fascinating.

They took two groups of kids...they all looked about the sae age apart from one key difference..they were just on either side of puberty !

Each child had to view quickly images of expressions and then react by pressing button to indicate the expression..ie: sad, happy, angry, pensive, expressionless !!

Well, the results were that the younger children were far far quicker  (2-1)to recognize the expression than the ones who were pubescent !

The conclusion is that puberty screws up your mind !! ..LOL..this helps to explain why pubescent teenagers tend to be rebellious and without the ability to sympathise or empathise.....their minds are just too hectic dealing with the onset of puberty !

Thanks for telling me now...don't do too much pumpkin pie...in fact, where I am traveling to for Thanksgiving...it is a must I make the sweet potatoe pie...Cheri's daughter is already calling me...she makes the chocolate cream pie...and I make the potato and pumpkin....the pumpkin does not need all of those nasty spices...I would rather choke on 100 year old fruit cake...
