Proper Procedures for quitting cigarettes

My dad is addicted to smoking since last 20 years, earlier it didn’t had much effect but now when he is 50+ his cough level has considerably increased. He is also willing to quit smoking, but he always ended up smoking again. Can anyone help me find a proper guide or procedure to quit smoking permanently? Thanks in advance

If you are in the UK the NHS have a very helpful service. The phone number is erm... dunno. I can't get onto their website. It says "Service unavailable". Next time I see the ad on TV I'll post the phone number here.
N.B. You see, this is a good reason for putting your location in your profile.

I found that the nicotine alone is actually quite easy to beat, it's the habit that is hard. If you can identify the "triggers" that get him smoking (maybe it's when he sits down with a cup of tea, or reading the paper, waiting for a bus, driving...) and find a way to distract him from smoking at those points, then he will only have the nicotine itself to deal with.
I was lucky - I quit while I was away teaching science in Thailand, so already all of my usual triggers had gone.

I agree with Ben - I also found the nicotine addiction easy to overcome. My extra help was incentive. I lost 2 friends to smoking related cancers within a short time, one of whom was only 43. Also becoming a father and wanting to be active when they get older was incentive enough to quit, which I did overnight and without lapse.
I think that if your dad not only gets rid of the triggers, but can also find a good incentive to quit, then the job is almost done. But it still takes courage and will-power to remove from your life something that could be seen as a "friend" or a comfort for 20 years. He has to REALLY want to give up for himself, not because someone tells him to.
Good luck!

Yep, I go along with BenV too. I have managed to quit several times, but I go back on them again mostly because I do some long distance driving and have a need to be doing something when on long motorway stretches.
