Okay, weird subject line....but I have a question. Men are welcome to answer too....but do any of you women ever experience sharp pain in any of your breasts? I have an issue with one lately....but do not want mamo procedure as I don't want radiation put in my body....or if there is a new procedure, let me know??? I haven't heard of such, but will use an alternative method to see inside the tissue if possible...

Can't say much about the pain (other than to be concerned for your health, but clearly you are also aware of the possible risks).
We are all exposed to radiation all of the time, so I do not see that very low level radiation will make a significant difference in the risk we take every day.
There are other ways of looking at the breast, although they are generally less common, and I do not know how well they do the job.
Clearly, the most obvious is ultrasound, but I am not at all sure if that will pick up a tumour (a very large solid tumour will probably be detected, but I would guess it will have to be significantly more advanced than the level of tumour that X-rays will detect – and a CT scan would be more sensitive yet).
The other two imaging technologies that might be able to detect tumours, but I do not know how well or how available they are, is MRI, and infra-red imaging (which can possibly detect changes in the vascular system if the tumour is fairly close to the surface).

Loretta - how often has this happened. Please don't take any chances, go see the doctor asap. It could be something simple, please just go.

So true George, but I have a doctor who is a friend of mine who recommends women should not use it as it is direct skin contact through tissues...I have to agree with this. Indirect is different..if it is not, please expound a bit on it...?

I agree with this, I remember reading something, but tossed it ??? Will research this further...

Yes, ultrasound is a nice source, but I know it to be used for organs, etc...I don't think if there is a tumour it is large, but, I know there are dieseases that are not picked up for years on women with their breasts...

I know about MRI, but mostly used here for bones and organs..hmmm, maybe breasts...? I will check with my doctor and my friend who is nearly unreachable most of the time...aagghh
Hugs and kisses to you my sweet man![:I][:X]

Everyday for the past 2 weeks...my mind automatically goes into denial mode and today it has to stop...I will see my old doctor and see what she thinks...I have never thought much about it but it is intermittently, not constant pain...but have notice that the breasts seem to be much fuller too, but both of them?

I don’t thing that it is anything serious.
Many people (man and women) on some point in life experience sudden sharp pain in the breast, lasting a few second.
It can happen a few times a day or a few times a week.
Causes are stress and physical exhaustion.
Presence of this type of pain is usually mistaken for heart attack by male and by female for sign of breast cancer. In reality, it is nothing serious.
-
Loretta when I gained weight my breasts became much heavier and this also was a cause for the type of pain you are describing. I was very worried and had the mamagram..It was worth the risk and not painful like I thought! After loosing this huge amount of weight, my breasts have felt much better and have alot less pain then they did before.. I have always been large buted, DD cup my whole life, so even when I loose the weight I am very top heavy so have known that for along time.. but excess weight can really cause breast pain!! Not constant but intermittant like you described.. Go get checked anyway friend .. You are worth it! We don't want to loose you!

I agree with you on stress...it is related to 80 percent of office visits to physicians..but this is throughout the day, in the same place, for two weeks consistently, in the same spot, and I am fighting denial in my mind everyday..thinking it is nothing really bad...

I wouldn't have mentioned it, but I know it has been daily...so that is why I asked thinking some of you women or doctors would know something about it being normal..read upon some sites thank you George!!! I have learned some interesting alternative ways to deal with it...cabbage leaves for covering of course, iodine, mineral oil, primrose oil, barroge, black current oil, bind myself up in bandages...and this should take care of the swelling and pain! Voila! What do you think?[;)] I think I will be fine...I think I am just in a panic mode as it is like a sharp needle like pain

It's probably something minor, but have it checked just in case.. Sharp stabbing pains are not good, and they are in the same spot... Is there any redness? You said they are a bit swollen right! Maybe a hormonal thing maybe not... have it checked... You do it!
Karen
-
Lo, please check your e-mail.
Gaia xxx

Okay, no redness, searched for that too...no spots, no outside soreness, no lump, nothing unusual looking or feeling. I read most of the night...no one mentioned sharp stabbing pain...I have it day and night...I don't feel it when I am asleep...on the scale of 1-10 of pain, I would say a tolerable 6...but it is a mite uncomfortable during the day...the main caffeine I consume is not by drink as I am not much of a soda person unless I am at a high stress level and must have a coke or a pepsi...(I had one the other day with my deadline for marketing)but i do consume chocolate about 1-3 times a week...I still cannot get a hold of my friend who deals with women in this area...(darn doctors!)I called my girlfriend who just got married not too long ago, as she is not a specialist but an general MD. She seemed to be concerned a bit...states I definitely should have it checked out...She states she wouldn't be concerned if it was every other day or just once in a while but not throughout the day or night...crudola! I am calling my doctor tomorrow...geez...

There is some argument against regular X-rays that annual exposure to X-ray radiation carries an incremental risk that has to be offset against the very slight probability that in any one year it may actually detect a tumour.
The risk of a single X-ray, particularly where there are other indications of risk, will rebalance that balance of risks, as the single X-ray is less risk than repeated X-rays, and the expectations of detecting a tumour are slightly higher because of the other symptoms.

Actually, MRI is very good for soft tissue – in particular, it tends to display blood flow quite well, which is why they use it to investigate brain function, since they use it to identify which parts of the brain receive increased blood flow, and from that (probably a little simplistically) try and deduce which parts of the brain are heightened in level of function during different experiments.

How does Thermography work?
All objects with a temperature above absolute zero emit infrared radiation from their surface. Measurements of infrared radiation emitted by the skin can be converted directly into accurate temperature values and a law of physics called the Stefan-Boltzmann Law defines this relationship. Human skin emits infrared radiation mainly in the 2 - 20 micron wavelength range, with an average peak at 9-10 microns. State-of-the-art infrared radiation detection systems utilise ultra-sensitive infrared cameras and sophisticated computers to detect, analyze, and produce high-resolution diagnostic images of these infrared emissions. The problems encountered with first-generation infrared camera systems (such as improper detector sensitivity, thermal drift, calibration, analogue interface, etc) have been solved for almost two decades. The strict environmental control that is essential whilst performing a thermal image, eg. 1 degree C of change during the examination, is necessary to produce a physiologically neutral image free from artefact.
Breast thermography, therefore, is a clinical diagnostic procedure, which uses highly specialised infrared cameras to measure the heat coming from the body, in this case, the breast. Thermography as a test of physiology is not capable of, and will never be, capable of detecting breast cancer. Anatomical testing, such as mammography, can also not detect breast cancer. Both procedures demonstrate abnormalities indicating the possibility of the presence of cancer, as well as a host of other breast conditions. These clinical findings require differential diagnosis. Only laboratory confirmation of abnormal cell morphology can make the correct diagnosis of cancer.
Thermography of the human breast is not a stand-alone tool as some have suggested in the screening and diagnosis of breast cancer; it is adjunctive. We cannot ignore thermography's tremendous role as an early risk indicator or as a monitor for treatment. In this way changes in tumour angiogenesis can be evaluated and other procedures can be performed to aid in the earliest possible diagnosis. The procedure is non-ionising and safe and there is no reason to simply "wait and see" any longer.
Another advantage that I believe that breast thermography has over breast X-rays is that I believe it is not particularly comfortable having the breasts squeezed between the plat plates that form the X-ray unit, whereas I believe the thermography does not require the breasts to be squeezed between plates, but are comfortably left free of any direct contact with the equipment; and ofcourse, it is not invasive, there is no energy (X-ray or acoustic or magnetic and radio – the last being part of the MRI process) that is projected into the breasts.

Going to your doc earlier than January would probably reassure you.
No x-ray, just talk and see...would be enough.
"Bad" things -so bad that we rarely name "them"- are typically indolent masses: no pain and little inflammation around.
I know that I'm not an expert (and I am 'breastless'!).
You did't mention if it is a left or right pain...
I wish you a spontaneous recover, with the help of cod liver oil, obviously!!!
iko
-
Maybe it would reassure me, but I am enjoying the holidays with much cheer, vigor, and joy throughout! I don't want to be bogged down a bit...yep, indolent is a good word this...masses...hmmm, I haven't been to mass in a while...lol Just kidding...even though that part is true.
Breastless is much better than being breathless? LOL Left was the one which was being problematic at the time. No pain today either...living pain free! Woo Hoo! Might've been just stress...? Cod Liver Oil is good for many things too.
"Just Me, Lo" Loretta

Whatever cod liver oil might do, it takes a really long time to be perceived...either vitamins A and D or omega-3 fatty acids work in the long run.
It's a wonderful placebo anyway, one of the best.
LOL (liver oil life)

IKO, You bring up cod liver oil...you must sell it, I see or you wouldn't be bringing it up so much. Has it done something spectacular for you healthwise?
"Just Me, Lo" Loretta
-
Yes. It's been a wonderful placebo for me...and I'll remember it for the rest of my life.
I don't sell it, I buy it full price, but with the same enthusiasm of CLO dealers...Did you check: "CLO number one superfood?"...they sell it and believe it's great too!
http://www.westonaprice.org/basicnutrition/cod-liver-oil-menu.html
Anyway, sometimes I'm more relaxed and joke about my CLO mania as everybody in this forum is doing about their things.
Take care

We are curious indeed, stuck with that silly hooping sheep all the time!
Did you read my 2 "hot" topics (monologues) about leukemia and about CLO (complementary med.)?
Take your time...it might sound too thick and condensed...I'm actually trying to do my best!

As long as that hopping sheep does not have hooping(minus the w)whooping cough...he should be okay. No problem, will probably check out the threads...do you deal with anything on the omega 3, amino acids, or anything like that? Just curious... I like your LOL definition...pretty cool! ;-)

Hi Loretta,
You may have spotted this post to Carolyn about omega-3 (CLO topic):
quote:
..So when you give fish oil you are giving omega-3 fatty acids mainly.
Omega-3 may have amazing effects on the human brain and they are currently being tested in patients with bipolar disorder (a type of psychotic depression): there are positive and negative reports, as usual. They just started few years ago...it is a promising field.
There is an interesting book about this by Andrew L. Stoll:
http://www.amazon.com/Omega-3-Connection-Groundbreaking-Anti-depression-Program/dp/0684871386
In proper doses you may be sure to give good nutrients (they come from the sea plankton!) and no toxicity. Even if they don't work, your kid will be safe and well nourished.
I don't know ADHD enough to reccomend anything, but speaking of nutritional supplement and reminding the paper cited at the beginning of this topic, I would suggest to alternate fish oil with CLO.
Vitamin D has also positive effects on the brain.
Check carefully expiring date and storage reccomended conditions: these oils may go rancid quick.
I reccomend that book: "The omega-3 connection"...it is a very interesting reading. These peculiar fatty acids seem to come directly from the plankton itself (the origin of life from the sea...) even fishes cannot synthetize these molecules! Isn't it fascinating? Our brain (or what is left of it!) craves on them...
Fish oils and flaxseed oil contain omega-3.
But only fish liver oils have omega-3 plus vitamin A and D...the magic recipe.
bye bye!
LOL (Long Overnight Lesson)
