New Theories / Did the universe start with marajon neutrinos?
« on: 29/04/2011 10:24:35 »
i read from "neutrino" by frank close that the universe could have started with marajon neutrinos from the big bang what do you think?

Physics, Astronomy & Cosmology / what will dark energy do to our universe?
« on: 29/04/2011 10:20:07 »
i have heard of dark matter like neutrinos but what is dark energy

3
Physics, Astronomy & Cosmology / can we walk faster than light?
« on: 27/04/2011 13:57:16 »
Of course we can when lasers are directed at a bose einstein condensate it practically comes to s standstill so what do ya say folks?

4
Physics, Astronomy & Cosmology / How do we know the age of the universe?
« on: 27/04/2011 13:54:26 »
the age of the universe is a big gigantic hypothesis hence scientists are trying to recreate ( Has been accomplished ) the big-bang we are also currently trying to use our most powerful telescopes to view into the core of our current universe but the current figure still stands at about 10.1 billion years

5
New Theories / how will the universe end?
« on: 27/04/2011 13:47:09 »
some say that the universe is a never ending cycle of big crunch and big bang but what dark matter is doing is that it defies gravity causing the galaxies to float apart and ultimately it might just rip every thing apapt and i mean it when i type EVERYTHING! But some people say that after the big rip ( caused by dark energy )the dark energy will rip itself apart hence causing a new universe to be born out of its predecessor.
so what do you thinl? Please post your comments below

Physics, Astronomy & Cosmology / Why is the strangeness of a particle measured in negative but not positive?
« on: 17/04/2011 06:42:24 »
I know that particles containing strange anti quarks have their strangeness measured in positive but why do  strange paritcles have their strangeness measured in negative for example
Particle symbol        Strangeness
κ‾ (kaon)                ‾1
Ω‾                       ‾3
Λ°                       ‾1
Σ‾                       ‾1
Ξ‾                       ‾2
Ξ°                       ‾2

That CAN'T be true! / ...that the sun generates about as much energy as a compost heap.
« on: 17/04/2011 06:29:29 »
that much energy in a 400 kg compost heap could have powered the sun for a year

That CAN'T be true! / ...that the sun generates about as much energy as a compost heap.
« on: 17/04/2011 06:28:44 »
well it should be correct but only if the compost heap is large enough . i heard that i gram of matter completely converted into energy will give you a blast about the size of one created by a 20 kiloton nuke

Question of the Week / QotW - 11.01.23 - If light is massless, how does it bend due to gravity?
« on: 17/04/2011 06:24:29 »
light does not bend (but it still can be considered as bending) the space and time around light is bended making it seem like light is bending hence light is bending and not bending at the same time

10
New Theories / how do you think the universe will end?
« on: 17/04/2011 06:21:54 »
personally i think the answer is number 4 but someday the big rip will happen and end everything due to the effects of dark energy

New Theories / The M theory ( the strings theory)[???]?
« on: 17/04/2011 06:17:47 »
well i found on a website that the first four are definitely  height width length and time 9 width is also known as breadth) and the rest is   Extra dimensions in string theory
Superstring theory is a possible unified theory of all fundamental forces, but superstring theory requires a 10 dimensional spacetime, or else bad quantum states called ghosts with unphysical negative probabilities become part of the spectrum.
Now this creates a problem in d=10 string theory: how to get the d=4 world as we know it out of the theory.
So far there are two main proposals:
1. Roll up the extra dimensions into some very tiny but nonetheless interesting space of their own. This is called Kaluza Klein compactification.
2. Make the extra dimensions really big, but constrain all the matter and gravity to propagate in a three dimensional subspace called the three brane. (For an analogy, your computer screen could be said to be a two brane of three dimensional space.) These types of theories are called braneworlds.

Physics, Astronomy & Cosmology / What exactly are w , z and higgs bosons?
« on: 17/04/2011 06:03:25 »
Well there are rumors that scientists at CERN and Fermilab have found the higgs boson

Physics, Astronomy & Cosmology / Does Zr-96 have the longest half life?

Question -   Does uranium238 have the longest half life of all
radioactive elements?
-----------------
Oh my, no.  U-238's half-life is long, 4.51e9 y, but it is not the longest.
Here is a list of nuclides with longer half-lives.

V-50 6e15 y
Rb-87 5e11 y
Zr-96 >3.6e17 y
Te-123 1.2e13 y
Nd-144 5e15 y
Sm-147 1.06e11 y
Sm-148 1.2e13 y
Sm-149 4e14 y
Gd-152 1.1e14 y
Lu-176 3e10 y
Hf-174 2.0e15 y
Ta-180 >1e13 y
Re-187 7e10 y
Pt-190 6e11 y
Pt-192 1e15 y
Th-232 1.41e10 y

The longest-lived of these is Zr-96, with a half-life nearly a hundred
million times longer than U-238.

=====================================================
U(238) has a long half life but not THE LONGEST. Some other grandfathers are:
Th(232) t1/2 = 1.405x10^10 years, Lu(176) t1/2 = 3.78x10^10 years, Hf(174)
t1/2 = 2x10^15 years
I am not sure these are the longest, but you can scan the following web site for data in many forms:

Physics, Astronomy & Cosmology / who thinks that hydrogen has an atomic mass of.......?
« on: 16/04/2011 15:57:38 »
the correct answer is .....will be revealed when poll ends

15
New Theories / The M theory ( the strings theory)[???]?
« on: 16/04/2011 15:45:14 »
[???] Personally I think that there are 12 dimensions comprising of height,length,breadth,space-time,speed,mass,force,energy,distance,direction and electric charge

Chemistry / I heard that uranium238 has the longest half-life, are there any longer ones?
« on: 16/04/2011 15:26:49 »
I heard that uranium 238 has the longest half life of 4.51 billion years , are there any elements with longer half lives than uranium 238 ( and what element has the shortest half-life?)

Physics, Astronomy & Cosmology / Can matter and anti-matter annhilation one day power the earth?
« on: 11/04/2011 16:01:45 »
I wonder if one day anti-matter and matter annhilation can power powerplants and produce enough electricity to power the earth as an alternate source of energy instead of fossil fuels, uranium or plutonium

Physics, Astronomy & Cosmology / why don't the electrons circling the atomic nucleus collaspe inwards?

what is the Ω‾ particle

Physics, Astronomy & Cosmology / Is it possible to travel faster than the speed of light?
« on: 30/03/2011 16:20:00 »
Quote from: The Scientist on 27/09/2010 14:55:56
We know that the speed of light travelling in a vacuum c = 3x108m/
s
Is there any possible ways to go beyond that figure? Perhaps we can merge some of the light theory with other theory and try to get something out of it.
Yes it is possible to go beyond light speed but we must be massless if not it is impossible as mass becomes infinite as we are  approaching the speed of light.
