Just Chat! / Re: did someone at wembley read the naked scientists?

I thought the 30,000.00 Euro fine quite inadequate considersting the vast amount of money football brings in.

My main reason for publishing this nonsense (which is now repeated by the Scientific American) was to point out the distortion of values of energy etc that commonly occurs when articles are quoted.
If the original figure for the amount of energy was 10 to the power 60 ergs (10^60) a vast amount this is often quoted as 1060 ergs as pointed by bored chemist a tiny amount.
This does not confuse the mathematical literate and only raises a wry smile but might confuse others !

Just Chat! / Early Re: Am I the only one to find weather charts awusing?
« on: 22/06/2021 20:50:53 »
Early in April when I first read this article it seemed quite authentic , written by a genuine astronomer as he spoke of Angstoms and ergs.
Quite a few ergs were needed 160 I believe which will have to wait till we finish beveloping our fusion plants which should not be long

Just Chat! / Re: What is the Fastest Accelerating Species on planet Earth?
« on: 21/06/2021 14:13:59 »
The sledge accelerating experiments were interesting as for a short time they resulted in the highest speed any human had travelled (about 1000 mph) , the vehicle was accelerated by a rocket engine and slowed by a water brake.
Racing drivers occasionally suffer 50g acceleration if they run into Tyre barriers but live to tell the tale.

I would not expect the tortoise to suffer more than 50 g it depends on the hardness of its shell and that of the rock.

Just Chat! / Am I the only one to find weather charts awusing?
« on: 21/06/2021 13:52:06 »
Each morning I am awakened to Sky TVs,s world wide temperature chart and it is interesting to compare temperatures between places such as Kuwait and Stanley for most of the year Kuwait is 40°C hotter but occasionally for one or two days of the year Stanley is hotter!.
Today is the summer equinox and it is a strange fact that the summer and winter ones in the UK  tend to have the same temperatures in the 10 to 12 degree range.
There are plans afoot to widen the orbit of the Earth to reduce global heating I hope nothing comes of it as it will spoil the eclipses

Geek Speak / Re: Is it possible or economical to rent time on a supercomputer to make Bitcoins
« on: 18/06/2021 13:15:22 »
It was rather the answer I expected ,if it was a good Idea some one would already be doing it.
I wonder if the technicians who have their hands on these things sneak in a bit of processing for unworthy causes ?

Geek Speak / Is it possible or economical to rent time on a supercomputer to make Bitcoins
« on: 17/06/2021 19:08:54 »
Can anyone buy time on a super computer or does it have to be for a good cause such as climate control or curing cancer ?

Just Chat! / Why are retailers of deaf aids so keen to label their products as invisable
« on: 25/05/2021 12:59:37 »
I have started to use the efficient deaf aid issued by the NHS 3 three years ago and have been reading all I can find.
All the adverts emphasize how inconspicuous they are as if there was something deeply shameful about being deaf (like having (HIV), I would be happy to wear a gaming head set if it did a good job I am in no way ashamed of being deaf !

The Environment / Re: Can we use the energy underground to replace fossil fuels?
« on: 26/03/2021 13:36:09 »
I did not of course contemplate envisage importing heat as such only electricity generated by geothermal heat.
it seemed a good idea one hundred years ago but other ways of generating electricity have rather made it obsoleate.
the imminent development of cheap simple fusion plants makes it even less likely that it will ever come to pass.

Just Chat! / Re: Any familial stories of civilians coping with the air attacks during the war?
« on: 25/03/2021 18:39:03 »
In 1940 my sisters Grammar school headmistress arranged for her pupils to learn German instead of French just in case the fighting on the beaches did not work out

There has been talk of shipping in geothermal energy down from Iceland eversince I was a boy but it gets nowhere , if it is cheaper to burn natural gas that's what gets done regardless of pollution

Physiology & Medicine / Re: Is it desirable for Mankind to be smaller in stature?
« on: 22/03/2021 09:49:37 »
Bashing two bits of Plutonium together does not work very well they soon blow appart , you can do it with U235 but it is much more expensive to produce

Geology, Palaeontology & Archaeology / Re: Is the earth really flat?
« on: 22/03/2021 09:25:52 »
Any text book will tell you that missiles move in a parabolic path that only happens because the earth is flat and of infinite extent.
If the Earth was spherical they would take an elliptical path.

Just Chat! / Is 2001 FO32 on a collision course ?

As it is past 16.00 UTC and I am still here I guess the orbital predictions are correct.

I have allready explained how to do this , set it up on another system then copy it over enmass to where you want it.

Our Hurricane and Spitfire drivers did quite well in 1940 sitting down

Today we learn of the sad loss at the age of 51 of one of motor racing finest female competitors Sabine Schmitz from cancer

Physics, Astronomy & Cosmology / Re: Is there a better way to power a spacecraft than a nuclear source?

A few are working with nuclear power generation and ionized gas propulsion but they are very rare
