Dozen people trapped upside down on roller coaster
« on: 03/07/2006 22:45:58 »
ANGOLA, Ind. (AP) — A malfunction on a roller coaster at a northern Indiana amusement park left about a dozen people hanging upside down about 50 feet in the air for about 45 minutes before they were rescued.

Firefighters used ladder trucks to nudge the coaster cars through the loop to an upright position on the Afterburner ride at Fun Spot Amusement Park Saturday afternoon, said T.R. Hagerty of the Angola Fire Department.

Neil, phew, I thought you took a picture of me! I am so relieved to see it was not!
Let me tell you I have been on a ride that malfunctioned like that when I was about 9 years old. It was called the Hammer. My sis and I were stuck in it for about ten minutes while we hung on loosing our money candy and almost ourselves as the gate opened up and swung me out over the fairground. I started screaming and my sis was clutching the door.  I was hanging by my own arms for what seemed like 20 min. I am sure it was only a couple of min. I could hear my grandma screaming at the fair operator to do something right now. I think she thought he should scale the big hammer like spider man or something. He was working as fast and hard as he could. We were all scared. I had no idea I could hold on to something so tight.  Must say , I was not a large kid at that point so I did not have all the weight to deal with that I do now. Now I would die for sure, and then the pic Neil posted would be most appropriate![:D]

I must say they have improved the gate latches on those rides these days and they have a much more positive latch.
I hope they were all ok! Scarey....Karen
