So my washing machine caught fire today
The good news is I was able to get my washing and drying done all in one go.

Aren't washing-machines pretty amazing devices, when you consider that they sit in our homes, and continue to perform their duties for years on end - without any regular servicing?

My washing-machine kept on going for 15 years, before it "wore out", and had to be replaced.

And even then, it hadn't  "worn out" in any fundamental sense. Its electric motor was still running true, the drum was spinning, and un-corroded.  And all the machine's other physical components were functioning well.  Except for one component - the control-dial on the front of the machine.

Inside this dial, a metal screw had rusted through and broken. This made the dial unable to control the machine's operations - the washing programmes, water-temperatures, spin-cycles and so on.

The engineer who came to inspect the machine said this was the cause, but that the dial couldn't be repaired, or replaced, as it was an old machine, and replacements were unavailable.

So I had to buy a new washing-machine.

It seemed a dreadful waste of technology.  Like having to replace your Hi-Fi stereo set, because the stylus had worn out.

I had a Flymo grass cutter that had served me fine for 20 years until a part that supported the blade broke and a spare could not be found anywhere.
I replaced with a push along honda machine which is still in good order but I am not so I have had to replace it with a self drive version at a cost of £460.00

What do you make of the rules changing to ensure that gadgets are more "repairable" in future?
