Miserable little shiite is on an all expenses paid field trip to Scotland to visit the classic locations of geology !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Why didn't they have that when I was in the honors program at the same school????
HUH HUH HUH??
God bless his innocent lilly white rump.
Those trip leaders are work him OVER!!!

SCOTLAND, at this time of year? He must have lost his marbles.
-
No - his rocks - and more than three locs. are on the Isle of SKYE in the NORTH SEA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
BRU-TALLLLLLLLLLLLL !!
what did you guys do when all you had were kilts, oh refuge from North Carlyle?
-
erm, the last time I checked, Skye was nowhere near the North Sea, but as you are obviously hallucinating, I'll cut you some slack.
Whatever they are giving you, it's working. Demand more [:D]

Scotland is my most favourite place in the world. Hope that Frethack likes it too.

The horizontal rain is bad enough. It's the horizontal sheep that really get your attention.

As in rain, sheep and snow? [:D]
With a strong enough gale I would imagine they get their fair share of horizontal sheep sh*t up on the highlands [;D] ... not so bonny, now, eh [>:(]

Is that Kilt Rock?!?! I've been there!!! And, yes, it was cold, misty rain, and windy. I thought I liked the rain until I spent a semester in Scotland. Brrrr.....

does this remind anyone of an opera?
Der Fliegender Hollander, perhaps - only use "Scotsman" instead of "Dutchman."
Kudos on the art, Piscaso

Ah, then you'd be thinking of the famous steam locomotive then.
You have rare insight. True artistry is seldom appreciated while the artiste is still to the fore. I might be able to let the original go for as little as $200,000. Bear in mind that it will instantly appreciate significantly as soon as I croak.
-
I won't pay that!!
BUT I will send you a vial of poison.

Thank you very much, but I'm quite capable of covering my own asp.
-
I would hope so. There are laws about public indecency. I have heard of trouser snakes - but skirt snakes ??????

It actually wasnt THAT cold. It was especially cold as the sun was setting because the wind picked up, but the highs averaged around 12-16C.
A couple of pictures...Ill post more soon. We went to Huttons uncomformity at Siccar Point, where he found hard evidence for his theory of uniformitarianism.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siccar_Point (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siccar_Point)
Darwin was heavily influenced by Hutton, and was one of the first major proponents for the hypothesis. This set the stage for the wide acceptance of deep geologic time, and gave Darwin the time span needed for his theory of evolution.
The climb was steep...ugh.

Here is the unconformity. I love geology.

Despite my comments, September is really quite a good time to visit Scotland. End of May and early June can also be really pleasant. I think the average rainfall is a bit greater in July and August.

Fantastic pictures, frethack! A truly inspiring landscape!

There are some lovely mylonites at siccar point too.

Is quite a nice book giving quite an accessible (i.e. not overly academic) overview of the geological evolution of scotland...

Frethack,
Did you climb up the Old Man of Stoor, too?
-
Is Scotland near Cornwall ?

Is Scotland near Cornwall ?
Yes. At it's closest point you can actually see it. It's only about 16 miles.

Yes, I thought so cos when you're standing on the coast in the capital of Cornwall (McPortsmouth) ewe can see it quite clearly as that island across the sea. Ewe can get a ferry there ewe know !

Exactly! The funny thing is (funny peculiar, not funny haha) that a lot of people seem to think us Americans are not that hot at the old geography business. I think that a bit unfair 'cos by the time we've memorized the names of all 44 states, we're pretty well worn out.
-
I thought we had 57 states?
The landscapes were incredible, especially when the mist covered the mountains.

Didnt get to see the mylonites at Siccar Point...didnt even know they were there! I think that the mylonites we saw were associated with the Moine thrust, but I cant recall the area where we saw them.
Frethack,
Did you climb up the Old Man of Stoor, too?
LOL...I would fall to my death...hehehe. My wife threatens to clothe me in bubble wrap, Im so clumsy.
At the ferry dock on Skye (on our way to Raasay)

What! You mean they added eight more? When did that happen?
It looks nice and green there Frethack. They must have some pretty impressive sprinkler systems.
