Is our response to music hard-wired or culturally determined? Is the reaction to rhythm and melody universal or influenced by environment? I think it's both. I read this article done about how playing certain musical notes can actually produce certain predetermined sequences of animo acids in the body. Whether that's true or not, I don't know. But that would be the hardwired part. There's also all the studies done that link music with plant growth. However, there are many cultural aspects of music as well. I think if the society around you forbids a certain music, even if you are hardwired to like it, you'll still disapprove of it due to social pressures.
