Title: Is music hardwired or learned?
Post by: AllenG on 27/09/2009 17:13:57
From the 2009 World Science Festival:
Is our response to music hard-wired or culturally determined? Is the reaction to rhythm and melody universal or influenced by environment? Join host John Schaefer, scientist Daniel Levitin and musical artist Bobby McFerrin for live performances and cross cultural demonstrations to illustrate music’s note-worthy interaction with the brain and our emotions.

I think it's both. I read this article done about how playing certain musical notes can actually produce certain predetermined sequences of animo acids in the body. Whether that's true or not, I don't know. But that would be the hardwired part. There's also all the studies done that link music with plant growth. However, there are many cultural aspects of music as well. I think if the society around you forbids a certain music, even if you are hardwired to like it, you'll still disapprove of it due to social pressures.
