I used to have a girlfriend with central heterochromia, green eyes with a fringe of brown around the pupil. I've never seen it before or since.

It may or may not be genetic. Such a person has the same genetics in each eye, but one eye may be rich in melanin making it brown, while another may lack it, leaving it blue. I mean, I developed cataracts which made me go blind in my right eye. The left one is also going, but stopped progressing, so I never had that one fixed. Point is, the chemical balance wasn't the same in both eyes, and yes, it was a chemical (a drug) which caused the progression of the cataracts.

Genetics probably makes for a disposition to having such an imbalance. One person might have significant melanin in both eyes, but one more than the other, so they're still both brown. Only if you're on the edge might it be balanced that there is a significant chance of having different color eyes. The webpage cited early trauma that might cause the imbalance, but I also say a cat with very different color eyes, and it's kitten (they showed only the one of course) had the same, but reversed. So cute. That is serious evidence that it is genetic to a point, and that means that your kids will indeed have a greater chance of having multicolor eyes compared to the average child.

It's fine. It focuses at about 50cm now instead of about 20 like it was before.
Catch me in the right light and you can see a metal glint in my one eye.

You make it sound like cataracts is a painful condition. Bright light never bothers me unless I'm having a headache sort of day.

I don't notice the degradation in the left side, but the doctor sees it. It still focuses better than the right one as it always has. Funny that I've never been able to read with the left side except single words in isolation. The two eyes have never wanted to work as a team like they do with most people. On the other hand, it means I can use each to see different images and pay attention to both, such as having my right in the video camera viewfinder and zoomed to a specific thing being taped, all while my left eye keeps track of the navigation tasks as I'm walking.

I'm not Hal, and my real name is nothing close to Halc. If you're curious, it's pronounced "halse", soft c, not hard.

What do you mean? I now have slightly improved vision over what I had all my life, but they didn't cure my astigmatism despite it being a discretionary option. My insurance wouldn't have covered it.

Maybe if Yusuf was watching/reading the OP...he might have bought up the " Bionic Eye ".

I sort of have one now since there is an artificial part in there, but it's just the lens, the original one having slowly gone opaque.

Technically, I went blind due to what I call a 'Pitt-Bull attack'. It was a very friendly Pitt-Bull and we played with it a while, but it had been running through the poison ivy and so I unknowingly got covered with the poison, and treatment for that gave me the cataracts months later.

It is not normal functioning, but still allows for abnormal feats.
How many other people do you personally know who can achieve that, Right!

I have heard that Pitbulls have some sorta jaw locking mechanism which isn't entirely under their control.
If stress tensors are stretched to the core, the jaw locks on to thr target.
Even choppin off the head of the bull does not release the lock.

So it was  side effects of the treatment...hmm.
I know this guy who was aspiring to get into the army, his father, uncles, all in the army.
He just went for a general checkup to the opthalmologist.
& had general eye drops put into his eyes to just clear the dirt.
The Doc messed up the drops, the guy almost lost his vision.

Ps - Bloody Insurance is never good enough for anything...but people should still buy into it.
