Physics, Astronomy & Cosmology / Re: Could an overloaded curtain rail cause a picture to leap off the wall?
« on: 21/05/2017 23:04:54 »
Maybe it wasn't your son, maybe the rod was bent in an arch shape and this arch suddenly reversed (hence the noise) causing a force to be imparted into the wall thus propelling your picture across the room, and due to the rod now being in a sagged reverse arch could no longer sustain the load and then collapsed....  Your sons innocent and you now need to buy him a new bike ;)

Physics, Astronomy & Cosmology / If the universe is expanding, what is it expanding into?
« on: 21/05/2017 22:48:49 »
I have driven my daughter mad with this question so maybe we could find an answer for the following question...  If the universe as we know it is expanding ?  what exactly is it expanding into?  what is the other side of 7.5 billion light years distance ??

Physics, Astronomy & Cosmology / Re: Do an astronaut's telomeres shrink faster than those of a person on Earth?

There is a good book about flatworms and how you can decapitate them and regrow a head with all the functions and memories !  you can even cut one up into many pieces and all the bits will regrow !!!  yes into fully functioning Planarian worm.
Look up a book called "The First Brain"

Physics, Astronomy & Cosmology / Re: What is the effect on the moon's orbit of harvesting tidal energy?
« on: 21/05/2017 22:33:00 »
Surely the 38.2mm per year of extra separation would not be constant and would increase year on year.... therefore the amount of energy that holds the moon in place would need to increase but as it is decreasing because of all the wave farms, the rate of change of yearly position would also increase, of course this ignores any external forces that may reduce that distance impacts from meteorites for instance ...
