Dead chickens don't lay eggs. A good layer, with hefty hind quarters and a life expectancy of a few years, is a somewhat different bird from a broiler with a hefty breast and a life expectancy of 3 months. If you get a few good layers and a functional cockerel, you can make as many chickens as you want, but good breeding costs money!
All modern breeds are bred for fast growth. Not taste. The white pig, the super chicken, carrots, wheat etc are all bred for greatest production at the expense of quality. But that said, it is our own fault.

why anyone would want to feed preservatives to a chicken is beyond me!
I cannot think of one time in my 39 years of life where I've seen the price tag on chicken and felt it was overpriced.
