Sorry to have to break it to you JimBob, but Wales (unlike Scotland) never was a sovereign nation. In principle its principally a principality.

The above is a LIE conceived by the Scottish to make them feel better about being crushed by the British Boot-heel!

Prior to the Norman conquest of what is today known as Wales was completed in 1282, the region was a group of independent kingdoms. Originally the main kingdoms were Ceredigion, Seisyllwg, Dyfed, Gwent and Morgannwg. Wales did not exist prior to this and became a principality of England subsequently.
In 909 Dyfed merged with Seisyllwg (which included Ceredigion) and become known as Deheubarth. The last monarch of this region was Rhys the Hoarse, whose reign ended in 1234. After Owain Gwynedd ap Gruffydd of Gwynedd in 1170, the rulers of Gwynedd become known as the Prince of Aberffraw and the Lord of Snowdon until the end of the reign of Llywelyn the Great in 1240. He is succeeded by Dafydd ap Llywelyn, the first Prince of Wales.
Hmmm, time I went for a leak now!
