Hi, okay so I have a question regarding the topic of death before impact...actually two.
Okay well first, which has kind of already been answered, can you die from a heart attack before impact?
and second, if you do die before impact, can a coroner tell the difference if you did or not?

Physiology & Medicine / Why are some nipples inverted? What makes them erect?

Ok, my curiosity has been TWEEKED (pun very intended) about nipples. You have the obvious, forever asked question of why men have them. I want to know a little more about them. My wife's and oldest son's nipples go in (inverted)... Why? Some get very erect while some others don't... why? I'm a grown man and have perpetually erect nipples. It's almost embarrassing. [:I] Short of taking toenail clippers to them, [] what could be done about that? And, please feel free to add any other information about nipples that you have.

General Science / Mathmatical scenario hurting my brain.

My daughter and I were building a raised garden in the yard and we discussed the sizes to build it. After a few different sizes discussed, we both noticed a problem. Now, this may be simple math, but I just can't wrap my brain around this one. Please explain it to me so I can explain it to her. Please bare with me, as I'm a "Yank" and use feet and square feet.
Here goes:
I have two boards that are 8 feet long. If I make the garden square with 4 sides of 4 feet, I have a surface area to plant in of 16 square feet. If we go with cutting the boards at 5 feet with a 3 foot remainder, we have a 3 foot by 5 foot garden. Now we have 15 square feet to plant in. 2 foot by 6 foot = 12 square feet. etc. etc.

How does the surface area change if the lengths of the boards do not. They are only cut differently. Please help us out.

So, I understand that most body hair serves a purpose. Can anyone get more specific? If nose hair protects the mucus membranes inside the nose, then what does arm-pit hair do? Pubic hair? Arm / leg hair? Butt hair? Back hair? Ear hair? The hair on your head?

Hello everyone. Missed you all over the last few months. Been very busy. I've popped in a few times anonymously, but never chimed in. In what I need to know, you will get the idea as to where I've been...
My girlfriend has called me and we are both frantic. She had a tubal ligation approximately 2 years ago. She is now showing a few minor symptoms of pregnancy and is also lactating. She has recently changed residence and has taken on a lot of stress. So, we were thinking that it could merely be stress related, or should we start losing sleep now?

Please help. Will check in soon.

I just found out that Tarek (AKA Jaramillo) is going under the knife on the 21st. He's always had migraines and never worried much about it. The migraines started progressively getting worse and he was getting dizzy. When he went to the doctor, they told him it was probably a sinus infection and not to worry about it. Then, he started getting nauseous and demanded something be looked at further. He said he could hear his pulse as if under water when he layed down. They did an MRI and found 2 large non-cancerous growths at the base of his skull on his brain. They said that if he hadn't followed his gut, it would have killed him in as little as 2 months. Does anyone know anything about this ailment (hemangioblastoma)and the procedure to rid this? Tarek is the closest thing I've ever had to a brother and I'm very worried about him. He doesn't know much more than what the doctors are telling him and it's quite vague. I told him I'd relay anything that you all had to say about it. It may help to ease his mind, his mother's, his wife's and mine.

Ian asked another question today that, again, I didn't know. We only tell truths in my home and I didn't want to "wing it". So, again, I told him we'd turn to you.
"Where does snot come from, and why do we have it?" [?]
I have some vague ideas on his questions, but don't want to steer him wrong. He'll be back with me next monday and we'll read the results together.

Complementary Medicine / Insomnia

Please, is there any remedy for this sleep disorder? I want nothing more than to get my 8 hours in and go to bed at a decent time. I'm always looking at the clock and its way past my bed time. I do get sleepy, but it's too late to go to sleep. Once I am asleep, I'm GONE. I often have several early appointments that I have to keep, so to avoid sleeping through them, I just stay up. I'm not liking this at all. Does anyone have any suggestions? Any herbal supplements, exercises, techniques you could share?

Complementary Medicine / Sweaters

I work out quite regularly. I think I eat relatively healthy. I try to get plenty of rest. I drink lots of water. Yet, I sweat like a prostitute in church. I've noticed that I sweat more than the average bear, Boo boo.

My question is this.... What causes excessive sweating and is there a way to remedy this? I stay clean, so I don't smell. I'm just the guy with the deluge on my forehead. I've considered putting antiperspirant on my brow, but thought there may be a better solution. It's not my pits or anywhere other than my brow / head area. I'm tired of looking like I just ran a marathon when I've just walked into the office. I don't want to carry around a towel like Barry White, or Satchmo, but I've considered it.

What do you all think?

I heard this question stated the other day... Why do men have nipples? Well, I have no idea, and I thought you all would have some insight on this. I know that men and women have both differences as well as similarities. But, they don't seem to serve any purpose.... Did they ever? Is it an XY / XX thing? Everything serves some purpose right down to the toes. What's with the male nipples? I guess we'd look pretty silly without them, but we'd look silly without eyelids too. So, if someone could shed some light on my nipples, I'd appreciate it. []

The ingredience in Alka-seltzer are dissolved into water via an effervesscent tablet. What is the make up of this transferrence system and how is this concocted? How simple would it be to create this tablet in my kitchen? Can anything be worked into one of these "tablets"?

I recently spoke with a woman who has had several cases of skin cancer on several occasions. It seems to be a re-occuring thing. Her oncologyst(SP) has her testing a drug that seems to be working wonderfully. It's actually an ointment for genital / vaginal warts. Aldara is the pharmaceutical name and the drug base is Imiquimon. Does anyone know of any testing going on with this? Could this be applied to internal cancer? Could this be the cure for cancer?

General Science / How does hypnotism work?

I wasn't sure if this would go under science or medical, but probably both. For the fact that it's just my curiosity, I'll keep it here.

I just read an interesting article about hypnotism. I used to be a bouncer at a comedy club and had seen these comedic hypnotists. It was amazing (you're getting sleepy) how they had these people doing their bidding. Some were people I knew and would not have done this kind of thing. When I saw this, (very sleepy) I started thinking of all the deviant things I could do if I learned this art.[}:)] However, I've been told and just read that the subject is not in a controlable state. That I would not be able to get their money and then sleep with them. Hmmm. Well, my question is this. (very sleepy)If the subject is still very aware, why is it that this works so well on skeptics and believers the same? I belive that the article that I read may have diluted the content and was wondering how much validity was in hypnotism. Is there anyone here (very sleepy) that knows how this works on the brain and how it can alter someones entire thought process, ie quitting smoking, losing weight, barking like a dog at a command, crying, etc. ? I've seen movies where the subject will hear a key word and act upon it. Can this be done? Is this possible or fiction? I just don't believe (very sleepy) to the fullest that a thought process can be embedded into another persons brain like data in a computer. Is there any fact to this? (very sleepy) Does this tie into subliminal messaging?

Technology / How do I make my own Hover Craft?

I've seen the ads in the back of those magazines for building your own Hover-craft. When I get my boys this summer, I'd like to build one, but can't seem to find the ad again. Can someone explain the ins and outs of "Hover-craft-ism" to me. I have a basic knowledge of how it works, but would like to know if there are any hints that I'm not aware of. My concept of it is probably quite archaic and need some assistance. I don't want my boys to hear Daddy cursing profusely and would like to know what may frustrate me in this project, not knowing off hand. It would also be a good thing if we were not bleeding when it were all done and tested. Any hints out there.

General Science / Name That Material

I'm racking my brain trying to think of a material that would work for a prototype I'm working on. Please help if you know...

It should be transparent i.e. Glass, non-breakable, heat resistant, flame resistant, and relatively available. Does anyone have a suggestion?
