Generally capacitors are used for industrial or manufacturing users to reduce the penalty on their electricity bill for having a small power factor. If you want to add a capacitor at your home, you may be slightly reducing transmission losses for the electricity supplier, but certainly you power consumption will not decrease by adding capacitors.

I am not claiming an undisputed fact. My position is simply "there is no known scientific evidence that connects cancer with power lines". That does not say there never will be, it's just the current state of understanding.

You have said EMR (btw - more correctly we are discussing the effects of ELF) "can" cause cancer. If that's true, I'd like to see the evidence and an explanation for the mechanism.

According to Edward W. Campion, M.D. (New England Journal of Medicine, 337:44, July 3, 1997):
 
"there is no convincing evidence that high-voltage power lines are a health hazard or a cause of cancer...18 years of research have produced considerable paranoia, but little insight and no prevention. It is time to stop wasting our research resources. We should redirect them to research that will be able to discover the true biologic causes of the leukemic clones that threaten the lives of children."

YES, risk to live near power lines, because of high-voltage wires can lead to many health issues like leukemia and cancer. Electromagnetic censor is responsible for creating negative value on your body.

Nighttime energy demands is much lower than the day and we are wasting a great deal of energy from nuclear power plant and coal that’s difficult rapidly to power up. Wind power is cheapest source of renewable energy, but now a day’s challenge to deal with periodic movement of wind speed. Single wind farm will swing greatly, the variations in the total output from number of wind farms originally distributed in different wind systems.

Hi there,

I'm brand new to the forum but a fan of the Naked Scientists.

Was hoping someone could help me out with a question which I suspect is mostly driven by irrational fear... and non science. My partner and I are really excited to purchase our first home and facing some stark criticism from family members because there are high voltage power lines running around 25-30 metres from the back of the property - and I have no idea how high... 25 metres perhaps?

My question is can anyone point me to some credible sources which show it is safe to live near high voltage power lines from what I have seen there are some studies which show an extremely weak (to the point of non-existent) relationship...

I also understand that it may effect property value, and as they are often in industrial areas there may be more likely to have other sources that may be detrimental to ones health - but my query is solely based on the health impacts.

Would love some help with this one... please??

Leaving near power lines are really very bad.  In long-term experience to these high-voltage wires can lead to several health related problems like leukemia, cancer and also people in depression. Electromagnetic radioactivity is responsible for generating negative effects on human body. Electromagnetic fields are strong when you are 2 or 3 feet from the appliance. So, keep your distance every time!

Do (overhead) high voltage powerlines 'leak' electricity / electrons?

1: If they do could I stand beneath them with a fluorescent light, and that light would glow?

2: If they do, do they 'leak' more when it is windy?

   Electricity generated in power stations, it is raised up to a very high voltage. yes they leak but slightly power losses.

It’s possible to transmit power wirelessly, but it is extremely useless. It might work to power small devices over short distances.

You are connecting each of your wires are directly to a parallel port, if your pc has one as these typically use TTL logic levels. Parallel port is good but it is hard to find out on modern pc. one of the easiest i knw is usb experimental board, its comparatively inexpensive and gives group of Io pins.

High voltage communication lines are used to communicate electric power above long spaces. Selecting high voltage mean the current/power is low. If power is low then actually slight power loss due to the resistance of the supplying wires.

Power rule of transmission link is defined the ratio between transferring and getting end voltage to receiving end voltage of a transmission link between conditions of load and full load.
P=V2R is derived from V=IR and P=IV You get P=V2R because P=IV=VRV solved the equation V=IR for I and plugged it in to that Power equation P=IV Do the same for P=I2R

Yes, we can transfer power that is the product of voltage and current. We can transfer the total no of power at high voltage, low current or high current low voltage. Power loss is goes up very quickly with current. Therefore we worse the current as far likely by increasing the voltage. Some other advantage for high voltage DC is to increasing the capacity of associate existing power system wherever extra wires area difficult or costly to install.
