SciScoop Science News Forum
« on: 05/05/2005 08:51:56 »
Hi

I recently took over the world-famous SciScoop Science News Forum. The site is essentially a community blog where visitors can post interesting science news items they find on the web and logged in users can vote on whether the news story is worthy of posting on the front page (makes science news a much more interactive experience). Users can also comment or respond to the news stories (making the science news even more interactive).

The site just passed the 2000 story mark, and I'm hoping to make it to 3000 by the end of the year, providing everyone with a substantial searchable news archive.

If you've got a story to tell, pay SciScoop a visit.

I followed the link to find a brilliant website, with a fair amount of interesting reading.

Can anyone tell me why this post is being ignored? Is there something I should know about SciScoop?

[puts on flame-resistant garb]

Andrew, possibly the thread got no comments because it's considered somewhat 'against netiquette' to try to lure people from one forum to another.

They'll check it out, or not. No offence to David, but posts like 'wow, nice forum&people, check out mine (and dump this one, naturally)' come in 13-a-dozen, as you may have noticed.

Some even consider it spam, and I could show you dozens of examples, here and elsewhere, that go similarly unanswered.

Yes, you've hit the nail on the head.

It is a bit rude to advertise yourself on another forum, but I do know of David Bradley, and I respect his work, so I've allowed it to survive.

One of the other moderators may not take so kindly...let's see !

Clearly people are visiting the link (as I have) and perhaps as a gesture the gentleman can put a link to THIS site on his.

Hi

Just caught up with this thread. Serious apols if I broke any rules. I'd be only to happy for the NS's to post a note on SciScoop, mentioning their forum. Submission is open to all. I think it makes sense for us to work together in some sense as I suspect we both get about the same traffic levels and neither are approaching those "big" science fora in hits just yet[:)]. Hope to see you there.

Nice one David

Thank you for the link.

Maybe the Moderators will consider adding your link permanently, as you have done for us?

Well thanks David, that's kind of you.

Can I ask a favour ?

Do you think that you could alter the URL you have used on your link to :

http://www.thenakedscientists.com/

(i.e. omit the forum bit) - the reasoning is twofold. Firstly, there's more to our entity that just the forum, which visitors to your site might be interested in, and secondly, there's the possibility of a bit of upgrading shortly which may see some of the subdomian URLs change a bit and I'd hate to cause you a broken link...

Thanks once again, and best wishes with Sciscoop

Chris

That's fine, tis done. I suspected you'd ask me to do that anyway. Missed you at this year's Cam Sci Fes. I take it you had a stand again, hope it went well.

Thanks for making that change.

Regrding the Cam Sci Fes we hunted both in a pack and alone, armed with microphones !

I compiled a package of the material harvested from the day, which was mainly interviews with various demonstrators, members of the public, darleks, and Cambridge University's Vice Chancellor, and the package was broadcast within The Naked Scientists show on BBC eastern region, and also nationally on BBC Five Live.

We didn't stay in one place for long all day, so I dare say that's why we missed each other !

Sorry about that

Chris
