Title: Can I make iodine crystals from povidone iodine?
Post by: chewwcheww on 09/10/2007 04:47:50
HOW CAN I MAKE CRYSTALLIZED IODINE OUT OF POVIDONE IODINE. CAN YOU DO IT THE SAME WHY AS YOU DO WITH TINCTURE OF IODINE?

THANKS

CAN YOU USE  titratable iodine

Povidone iodine is not pure iodine but a water soluble complex of iodine and polyvinylpyrrolidone.  It is available either as a solution in water or as a cream (blend with other components).
Iodine tincture is a solution of pure iodine in ethanol.  (Iodine dissolves poorly in water).
Ethanol is far more volatile than water, so crystallization by evaporisation out of tincture is relatively easy.
Titratable iodine will probably be a complex of iodine and potassium iodide.  This KI3 is watersoluble.  But it will be much more difficult to crystallize iodine from this watersoluble complexes than from the tincture.

What do you want to use it for?

I tend not to trust people who TYPE EVERYTHING IN CAPITALS and ask about chemicals know as drug manufacturing intermediates.
All iodine is titratable.

i know i can crystallize tincture iodine, but its hard to find. Can i get titratable iodine into a purer forum? By removing water?

I think chewwcheww is just a newbie in chemistry and trying to experiment with anything he finds in the family medicine box or the garden shed (like fertilizers).  And I distrust people who do not capitalize the "I" for the first person singular, because they may be lacking the precision and concentration needed to work with chemicals in a safety-conscious way.

I could guess, but I don't plan to help him lose the ability to count to 10.
I'd like to know what he thinks "titratable iodine" means.

Wow.. allot of Ass holes here. And it was for a PJAS projet for high school..

thanks,

Someone who don't write very well, tries to make KNO3 from fertilizer and asks about making I2 immediately after, puts me in alarm; I don't believe very much on the "PJAS projet" excuse.

''the newbie who can count to 10.''

You know about the 10 kinds of people ?  Those who understand binary and those who don't. [;)]

"''the newbie who can count to 10.''"
And if you are careful what you play with, you might keep things that way.

Incidentally, I don't understand the reference to a hole in or for a donkey; or did you mean arsehole?
Maybe it's a "wrong side of the pond" thing.

The different use of ass and fanny transatlantic can lead to confusion not to mention fag and solicitor.

Thanks, I had spent the best part of a decade worrying about that.
