Title: Could you be a MENSA member?
Post by: dentstudent on 25/11/2008 13:22:25
and I'm not talking willies - which reminds me of a joke about gay ghosts, but I digress.....

Here is a question from the MENSA puzzle site. An easy one to begin with!

Rearrange the following letters to form two seven-letter words.

E   E   M   P   R   S   U

What are they?

See? Told you it was easy. Ok next one....

On each row place two letters that can be attached to the beginning of the given word to form a longer word. When completed the added letters will give a word reading downwards.

_ _ bow
_ _ hoes
_ _ eat
_ _ ward
_ _ on

What is the word?

Possible. But it could also be 24 - my last 9 batting scores in cricket!  [;D]

If H + N = 6,

M – V = 2

and E + K = 7,

what does Z – L = ?

No. The scores were 9, 18, 11, 5, 15, 8, 12,48, 24 (I may be stretching the truth somewhat here). But, in all honesty, here's a coincidence for you; my highest score in cricket & my highest break in snooker are the same - 68.

My first attempt was wrong because I made a silly error (+ rather than -). I got the reason right, though  [^]

Yes, got it.

Took far too long, looking too deep, the answer is too simple, so easily missed.

Z - L = 1

I was an opening bowler. Started as a tail-ender but ended up at no 7. I'm not sure how many half centuries, but not that many. I was not the most subtle of batsmen  [:D]

Ah, yes, it could be this too! The answer from MENSA is 16.

My answer would have been 41 too, why is it 16?

9    18    11
5    15    8
12    48    ?

1st line: 9  X2  +2
2nd line: 5  X3  +3
3rd line: 12 X4  +4 = 16

So you're a fast-medium swinger? (all jokes on a postcard to the usual address)
I was never a subtle batsman either - my favourite thing was for my opening ball to be hit for 6 back over the bowlers head. Consequently, I was a fast scorer, but often didn't last long. "No grace, no finesse - just readyaimfire!"

9 x 2 = 18; 9 + 2 = 11
5 x 3 = 15; 5 + 3 = 8
4 x 12 = 48; 4 + 12 = 16

I could bowl medium swing (inswing, outswing & reverse) but normally I was a fast bowler and relied on intimidation & brutality rather than tact to get my wicktes. Did a bit of leg spin too in my later years.

I see, i saw it as:
9 (9X2) (9X2)-7
5 (5X3) (5X3)-7
12 (12X4) (12X4)-7

A clock was correct at midnight.

From that moment it began to lose four minutes per hour.

The clock stopped two and a half hours ago showing 16.48.

The clock runs for less than 24 hours.

What is the correct time now?

My clock only goes to 12.

The person obviously owned an odometer, not a clock.
