Title: the density of urine.
Post by: paul.fr on 04/09/2007 19:09:46
in another topic, Eric, gave the following answer:

I take it that regular coke contains a lot of sugar, which increases the density.  In diet coke, sugar is replaced by sweeteners, of which you need less by weight to obtain the same sweetness.  So for the same volume, diet coke will weigh a bit less.

This lead to a very dangerous event, i began to think.....

Whilst thinking stuff, i wondered. If i was on a drip fed diet coke on the monday and regular coke on the tuesday, would my urine have different weight or mass depending on which coke i drank?

My family motto is, "i think, therefore i hurt"...........off topic in one post, is that a record?

Lets expand this to 3 days on a drip. the only intake of fluids is through the drip.

Monday a drip of regular coke
Tuesday a drip of diet coke
Wednesday a drip of water

does my urine have a different weight or mass on any of those days?

You mean you do not drink anything else, but do you eat ?  Because whatever you eat involves some intake of water.
Most of the sugar from the regular coke will be absorbed in your bloodstream, and maybe converted into energy.  But if you work hard with that energy, you will loose water by transpiration, which will make your urine more concentrated...
There are many parameters involved in this, I see no way to predict the result. Better go and find a volunteer.

That's right, no food intake. Just the drip.
Volunteer eh...

The body would take the sugar out of the coke, the leftover bits of the drink would have pretty much the same density. Of course, there are other things in urine that contribute to its density, mostly urea from digesting proteins. If you lived on coke (diet or "full fat") you would soon start to run out of proteins from your diet to digest, then start destroying the proteins from your body. Not a clever experiment.

If your body started to excrete sugar in the urine, it would indicate that you had something wrong with you. Diabetes, probably or at least I know diabetes can lead to sugar in the urine since there's too much in the blood so it's not taken back up (as it normally should be) for use or storage... hey look, I remember something I learnt at GCSE, go me. Of course, not having any expertise in these matters, GCSE biology may not have told me the full story, and there may be other conditions which can lead to the same effect.

But that was only a few years ago ;-)

Did you know that a head down tilt on a bed of five degrees to the horizontal cause the density of urine to drop to near water density?

Urine generally has a density near that of water.
