Title: Have any useful results been produced by quantum computers yet?
Post by: syhprum on 30/11/2019 12:09:14
Quantum computers seem to be very good at calculating such things as how many factors has 15 albeit at vast expense but has any computation been done with them that could not have been done by a conventional computer.

We discussed this issue on a recent episode of the Naked Scientists.

I remember the publicity about ENIAC in the 1940,s about how computers were going to change the world, well I suppose in a way they really have but it took 50 years or so to get going.

I remember the publicity about ENIAC in the 1940,s about how computers were going to change the world, well I suppose in a way they really have but it took 50 years or so to get going.

If you think face book and twitter and the internet are the revolutionary parts changed the world you are misguided. Facebook et al have led to social isolation intimidation lack of exercise etc, before facebook people used to talk face to face at 220 words a minute not 160 characters every 5. They had science clubs where such topics as this would be discussed. Kids used to exercise and socialise in a way that didnt give them a bullet proof screen to hide behind for good or ill.

The revolutionary part is the design and manufacture side of things. Quality, reliability, productivitym technicality of design and possibilities has come along way, starting in the early 70s, but really started going in the early 90s. It was once said if the british army had made Charles Babbage's mechanical calculator the first world war would have been over within a month due to the targetting accuracy of guns, computers are billions of times greater than that. Medicine engineering are all far advanced with the computer design. Soon this revolution will free man from labours, so he can sit on facebook and grow laterally.
