Title: Can male animal meat affect human libido?
Post by: thedoc on 17/01/2014 04:30:01
Zoyisile Fefeza asked the Naked Scientists:

In my culture, sexually-active women are prohibited from eating meat of a bull or any uncastrated animal for that matter. It is only at menopause that they are free to eat it. This was done to curb promiscuity'

Does it make scientific sense?

Thanx Dr Chris!

What do you think?

No, it doesn't make sense.
Unless you consider that it makes a lot of sense if the men like beef and want to keep it for themselves.
If they are greedy and selfish then it makes sense for them to invent some bogus reason to stop the women eating it.

In parts of the USA you can buy "Rocky Mountain Oysters (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rocky_Mountain_oysters)".  However the dose of testosterone from food intake is extremely low, and there is little data indicating that even eating the rocky mountain oysters has any effect on a person other than perhaps a placebo effect.

Also, keep in mind that a woman's life doesn't end at menopause.  So, the frisky old ladies can eat whatever they want?

In my experience, a shot of testoterone can do wonders for a woman's libido and pelvic muscle tone. I have no idea what culture the questioner is referring to, but whoever they are, they are definitely missing a Good Thing.

As with most cultural and religious restrictions on female behaviour, I strongly suspect it was devised by jealous, impotent old men - losers.

It's notable that you need (at least) two people to get promiscuity, yet they only seem interested in controlling the women.
