Title: How do you stream video?

I need some help understanding how to stream video. I'm going to have videos on my website of scientists answering questions on things like common misconceptions in physics. Here's a list of the ones I've done to date: http://www.newenglandphysics.org/Science_Literature/Journal_Articles/other.htm

However the files are very large. Some of them are up to half a Gig. So I thought it'd be better to stream the video. However I don't know how to do this. Can someone explain how or point me to a reliable textbook or website? Thanks.

You could upload the videos to Youtube. You could then link from your webpage into Youtube.
I think Youtube has some duration limits for each video?
If you filmed them in High Definition, Youtube might compress them a bit?

I don't like that idea. I'd be loosing the ownership of it that way. Alan might want me to make sure that it stays linked to my website so people know where it came from. I don't think he'd want it as a youtube video and I don't like the idea myself.

YouTube have three options : public , unlisted & private ...

With the private option, only specific people can see the video.
[ Private viewers need to have a YouTube or Gmail account ].

There are video-hosts other than YouTube , one I used recently is ...

which I found to be reliable , but it's not free-of-charge like YouTube.

Videos on youtube usually have text underneath them which can include links back to a website and it can be a large chunk of text if you wish too. It could help to attract people to your website as well because they may have your videos recommended to them after viewing similar videos by other physicists. I don't think youtube steals videos from anyone, so if you delete them from there they should simply vanish. When sending links to people you can still do this from a page of your website where you control the layout, and you can embed youtube into your own pages too. It really is the most sane way of doing things.

You don't lose ownership and you can also manage the license of each in the YouTube "video manager" section.
Plenty of things on Youtube get pinched but if the license isn't set as being "owned" there are various levels of license such as "fair use".
Also, to embed go to the "share" button near "add to" and "more" and click it then the embed then it shows the html to stream it fro m the YouTube site.

Besides U-tube there's lots to find about podcast services on the net.
take an afternoon to explore.

search words\:  podcast mediastreaming silverlight flash shockwave plugin etc.

also there's the possibility to embedd a video on your website that users can access through a plugin on their side.
like silverlight . flash etc.
 lotsa things possible . but it needs study to deploy. no easy 'how to'i;m afraid . but if you're above average smart , it won't be a major problem :)

Streaming for me is a part of my business. And unfortunately, I'm not a gamer who plays on Twitch or Youtube gaming. But still, I have a NO SPAMMY LINKS THANKS that allows me to broadcast sports and conferences to my platform. But I think it's a valid answer to your question too.
