Since people post here for a long time they get to know the other people posting. At times they feel comfortable revealing personal information so as to get something off their chest. Talking about things makes them easier to deal with. However there's always someone who will take that information and use it as a weapon. Most often they never understood why someone was posting it in the first place. Have any of you run into that kind of thing in this forum?
Every once in a while I have to go through something hard. I don't have anybody in my life to talk to about it so I sometimes talk to people in forums about it. Do any of you misread this kind of thing? It might come across as a person seeking sympathy. I myself hate sympathy. Empathy is an entirely different story though. Thoughts on all of this? Experiences of your own?
Thanks.

Many people here have slight differences in opinions, and I have not seen it as a major impediment to friendships.
It is unlikely that you will run into people from this website on the street (at least in the USA), nor will they know any of your close friends or acquaintances unless you specifically invite or direct them here. However, as with any open forum, this is open to everyone so you can never be sure who will read it.
Some people have chosen to post about their personal health issues, and I don't see it as being a problem with them as individuals, or the forum as a whole.

I don't think there is any special problem with this site although, in general, I would be careful about putting any personal information in the public domain if it can be traced to you in the "real world". It probably would not be the regulars here you have to be concerned about. In any case, anyone who wants to discuss anything privately can also use the forum's messaging service.

I will agree to be careful about information that can be used for purposes such as identity theft.
For example, I am very reluctant to give out my real birthday to websites that really don't need it (personals, e-mail providers, etc).
Also, for SPAM risk, be careful of websites that don't hide or obfuscate e-mail addresses. Or, really don't need 2-way communication. A "junk mail" account can be handy for websites that you really only expect a single reply from.
