Title: Bermuda Triangle: System Error
Post by: timey on 16/08/2015 00:01:30
Hi, I'm here to report, what I presume to be an error...
A post on "How does light speed up when it exits a denser material" has disappeared completely.  There was an answer from JeffreyH to post 49 at bottom of page 2 that is no longer evident.  My reply, now classed as post 50 at top of page 3 now being the next post.
I have never visited a site whereas it was possible for a "user" to delete entirely the evidence that one had ever made a post - only that it be possible that the content be deleted and just leave a full stop! Therefore this must be a case of a system error.
Having been edited on one of my posts, (deservedly I admit), it was perhaps edited rather over heavily.
Because I am operating from my phone and the window to post is fiddly, I compose my posts in my notes and copy and paste them over, therefore I have a chronological record of every post I have made on this forum.  If posts are disappearing I feel it might be prudent if I check my own posts for any system errors. I'll let you know if I find any discrepancies.

Ask Jeff if he deleted it.

It might be an error if Jeff didn't delete it but this is one of the forums that you can delete posts. The reply numbers following the deleted post will change to accommodate the new listing.

Well Pete, normally this action is 'not allowed' on forums and the function for doing so is blocked.  This being because otherwise it 'could' end up appearing as though someone is talking to themselves and makes reading a thread in a comprehensive fashion impossible.
Some Forums, on the basis that changing your statement is frowned upon, even include a feature that allows you to view what the post said before it was edited.
Presumably thenakedscientists relies on the element of professional trust amongst people of 'note' who are expected to comply to common decency, in that they would not feel the need to drastically alter ones statement, and most definitely would not intentionally try to intend to pretend that they had not made any statement at-all by deleting all evidence of a post.
Therefore it is actually my preference that Jeff did not delete his post and that this 'is' in fact a systems error!

Ask Jeff if he deleted it.

I believe I have...

The missing post seems to have reappeared.  Any news on the cause of this anomaly?
