Title: Fun Things to do with hydrochloric acid
Post by: AuToFiRE on 04/02/2011 20:54:00
So I was searching around the house for things to do and i came across a nice big bottle of 45% hydrochloric acid (muriatic acid on the bottle) held it at arms length when opening and within a couple seconds i was able to smell that it is still very much acid, poured a little into an old glass and put a pH indicator strip, came back in a minute and it ate the indicator right off the strip. So I got thinking what fun and interesting experiments i could do with it. Now before anyone gets all scared, I do know what im doing, im 23, love chemistry, I have all the proper safety materials to protect myself from the acid and fumes including full face gas masks, surgical gloves, aprons, etc.

So I ask, the smart masses here at NS, what fun and interesting things that I could do with things from around the house with hydrochloric acid?

Wet your hands with ammonia solution. Then put your hands over the open bottle of HCl: a white fume of NH4Cl will come out of your hands.
Of course other people wouldn't be able to do it, so you could join your movements with some "mystic" words  [:)]

How would you define "fun?" If things going "bang" are fun, you could pick up a few more ingredients and make TATP (not advisable). Or you could mix the HCl with a little H2O2, drop some copper in, dry out the resulting solution and get CuCl2. This stuff is great at bonfires because you can color the entire fire green by tossing some in  [:)] .

Mystic words like "My hands smell of stale urine"

You could use it to remove the scale from your toilet bowl. What could be more fun than that?  [:D]

I define fun as somethign that is a quick reaction maybe using it to plate things or create a precipitate that i could use for somethign else, etc

OK, so you should be able to use it in a battery of some sort or another to demonstrate that chemicals can produce electric energy.

That's really cool because it gives us an insight into the true nature of things.

Ok, then you could put some aluminum foil in your mouth and drink a glass of HCl. The quick reaction is assured, the feeling too, so I assume it's a big fun for you  [:)]
For what concern plating things, you could try with the chlorinated proteins of your mouth...

Good idea! Or, maybe: "the spirit of the old cow is being evokated!"  [:)]

that gave me an idea, a small tinfoil boat in a sea of acid!

Ok, so I just finsihed a little experiment with hydrochloric acid, bleach and some iron, and what happened was quite interesting, many crystals, resembling that of emerald formed, they are hard green and look exactly like emeralds... only one difference though.. they are melting like ice but at a much much slower rate. By any chance would anyone be able to tell me what exactly these are?

My wild guess would be ferric chloride, but I'm confident Bored Chemist will be able to provide a much better answer.

If it is ferric chloride, it's pretty nasty stuff! Look it up and take all necessary precautions.

If they are green crystals then it's more likely to be ferrous chloride.

I never was much use at chemistry!

well if its ferric chloride its not behaving like it, it has a high melting point of 315C but its evaporating almost as quick as it melts, its not leaving very much if any residue, also the pH strips i have dont even register it as acidic or basic

Not "ferric", *ferrous*.
How did you measure it to have a melting point of 315°C?
Anyway, if it vaporizes soon after melting, it cannot be an iron salt. What other elements were present in the iron sample that you used?
