Dearest Academics Of Generous Knowledge,
As a sheepy I of course know the answer to all kweschuns, but take a look at Clarissa Throwback the 3rd

Clarissa Throwback the 3rd just moments ago !
She's a fine filly who has just been asked how old she is but she can not answer the kweschun because it's on the tip of her tongue !! She knows that she knows the answer but can not locate it !
Why is it that sometimes we know that we know the answer to something but just cant retrieve the knowledge to vocalise it !! it's bizarre innit ?
If ewe can assist me with this then i can explain it to Clarissa who hopefully by that time will remember how old she is !

After a traumatic head injury I had some amnesia,including my address,etc.Now I have greatly recovered,but the tip of the tongue phenomenon is permanently worse.Apparently the lingering damage to memory centers is related to this retrieval ability.Given a set of choices including the correct word or memory,I am immediately able to recall it.If one can still remember numbers,the troublesome word's sounds may be converted to a number by a standard conversion method,easily learned.To avoid this particular problem,take care not to anger any drug dealers.

Another phenomenon noticed about tip-of-the-tongue(TOT) problem.Remember the toy "Magic 8-Ball"?The answer floated up into a window.The brain does something similar.If the word won't come to you,back off and relax,still intending to think of the word eventually.The brain,somewhere behind the scenes,will often do a retrieval later,a half hour or whatever.The answer will suddenly come to mind consciously.An alternate,slower path has been used to accomplish the same task.

yes, have often experienced that where the answer just appears 'spontaneously' later on. Clearly some memory retentive 'back-of-house' processes are still engaged even though we are not fully aware of it
